EDUCATION AS A DETERMINANT OF SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION
IAEME PUBLICATION, 2020
Education is regarded as one of the major tools in the development process. Education can go a long way in the growth of productivity, promote employment avenues, better health etc. Education can improve the socio-economic development of a state or a region by providing skilled workforce, higher employment and also helps in reduction of poverty in the society. These in turn help in increasing per capita income, improve people’s status, reduce population growth, improve living standards, improve environmental quality and also help in the decision making of the people and thus help in attaining the broader objective of socio-economic development. This paper makes an attempt to examine the relationship between education and socio-economic development in India over the period 2008 to 2018. Education Development Index and Socio-Economic Development Index were developed on the basis of indicators taken under consideration to find out whether there exists any relationship between education and socio-economic development in India. A simple regression was conducted among them and the results shows that there exists a significant association between education and socio-economic development
Educational Attainment in India: Trends, Patterns and Policy Issues
2005
Education is the basic requirement and the 'Fundamental Right' of the citizens of a nation. While Higher Education is important, the Elementary Education system serves as the base over which the Superstructure of the whole education system is built up. This paper tries to analyse the trends, patterns and interacting factors affecting the quantitative and qualitative aspects of School Education System in India in recent years. It is observed that complete Literacy has not been achieved and this has far reaching socioeconomic impacts. Enrolments in schools have improved substantially in recent years but the Retention rates are poor, and only a fraction of enrolled students completes even the Primary classes. Completion of Middle and Secondary levels are still lower. Substantial Genderbias in both access to, and completion of education is a major cause of concern. Wide regional variation exists even within this substandard performance of the Basic Education system. While few states have performed moderately, others have done abysmally, and continue to do so. Factors like poverty, presence of a wide child-labour market, absence of assured employment after schooling, and infrastructural problems are identified as responsible for the ills plaguing the elementary education system in India. Providing incentives for attending schools, making the schooling process attractive to the children, streamlining the middle and high school curriculum to make it more vocational and joboriented, and providing better infrastructure for the schools are some of the policies likely to improve the scenario.
Socio-economic Variables and their Effect on Education in India
International Journal of Experimental Research and Review, 2024
This study canvass the association between educational attainment and a range of socio-economic indicators in India, such as GDP per capita, employment rates, literacy rates of poverty, and innovation capability. Regression models are used in the research to examine the associations between Mean Years of Schooling (MYS) and Expected Years of Schooling (EYS), two important educational metrics, and these socio-economic outcomes. It is fact that most people believe that education is key and contributes greatly to the social and economic development of a society. The current study focuses on trying to evaluate the extent of influence of education in the economic and social spheres of India with the hope that such insights will help understand better the implications of educational gains. The research assesses the link between MYS and EYS and the chosen indicators with the assistance of regression analysis. National databases were analyzed and explored so as to establish the effectiveness and the strength of the relations of each outcome with educational factors. The table figures depict the ways through which education contributes positively to the socio-economic advancement by showing the significant contributions of MYS and EYS towards GDP per capita, GNI per capita, literacy rates, poverty levels, and capacity for innovation. However, the effect of education on income or employment rates was not pronounced as other employment factors were likely to play a bigger role than education levels. The findings of this study highlight how it is when an adequate budget for education is provided that this, in turn, aids the attainment of economic growth, poverty alleviation and increased innovation levels. Apart from enhancing the availability and the standards of education, policy makers must focus on employment and other economic conditions so as to serve national development effectively. Additional study is necessary as the relationships between education and other sociophysical problems, particularly those related to employment, are rather complex and need to be investigated further.

Although education is a source of better income and jobs, it has much value for social development as an imperative for the development of human capital. That is why it is considered to be a vital part of development economics. Most of the economists have a consensus that the pace of economic and social development of a country depends on its human resource rather than its material resources. But South Asian policy makers paid merely a lip service to this area. In this region the demographic nightmare poses a key challenge for human development since the population has more than doubled during the last three decades. This population could have become the real wealth of these nations, if sufficient investment had been made in developing human capital. Human resource development is the most deprived area in South Asia and this region spends less than five per cent of its combined GNP on education and health which is one of the lowest even in the developing countries. That is why; rapidly growing population has become a major liability and a source of human deprivation. In global context, South Asia has been the least developed region of the world, both in terms of its income and human developments index. The percentage of adult literacy is the lowest among developing nations, even behind Sub-Sahara Africa. In fact South Asia has emerged as the most illiterate region in the world. Its human capital is being wasted for a long time. The article defines the term 'human capital and discusses the role, which education and training play in the process of developing human capital. Social capital signifies sound institutions and good governance, which again depend on coverage and quality of education. It also discusses as to how education contributes to the development of human resource which supports not only economic development but also help to develop sound institutions and good governance. It also explores with the help of different studies at how education helps to address gender issue, health care and population control creating a strong nation ready to face the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Education is like a double-edged sword. It may be turned to dangerous uses if it is not properly handled"-T.Fang. This article is an attempt to show the importance and need of required amendments in the modern trends of the society in relation to education system in India. The share of Govt. sector in education industry is 95 percent as a part of socialist system we adopted in 1950s.But we are still far behind and could not catch the developing countries like China which got freedom from the occupation of Japan in 1949, two years later than us but has attained 90% literacy. We favored the socialist system as the poor can participate in the education equally, but could not deliver it properly. But the system proved good in quantity not quality.
