A cross-sectional analysis of factors affecting human development index

Journal of Applied Microeconometrics, 2022

Although human development has made significant progress in recent years, especially in developing countries, there are differences in human development between countries. To determine the development level of a country, it is necessary to evaluate the social, cultural, demographic and political factors along with the economic factors. The Human Development Index, which covers three basic components in terms of socioeconomic order, such as income, education and health, gains a different dimension in the name of welfare in all of these areas. Therefore, this study aims to determine factors affecting human development which is essential in terms of development goals. A cross-sectional analysis on a global scale is presented to investigate the impact of democracy, economic development, IMF loan use, infant mortality, and urbanization on human development. Quantile regression was estimated for 128 countries using 2019 data. The estimation results show that per capita income, democracy, urbanization, and IMF loan use have positive effects on human development. In contrast, infant mortality reduces human development. Afterward, we discussed the findings obtained from the analysis.

Determinants of Having a High Human Development Index: A Qualitative Analysis of Countries All Over the World

This paper investigates determinants of having a high human development index. Using Logistic Regression, the impact of life expectancy, literacy rate, GDP per capita, education, and inflation on human development of countries all over the world is determined. To yield robust estimates, possible violations of the assumptions of the classical linear regression model (CLRM) are accounted for. Several theories suggest that literacy rate is a significant indicator of human development but results of this study show otherwise. The findings confirm that education has the highest marginal effect among the determinants.

Determinants of the Levels of Development Based on the Human Development Index: A Comparison of Regression Models for Limited Dependent Variables

Review of European Studies, 2014

This paper aims to examine the factors affecting the level of development of countries using various regression models for limited dependent variables including binary logit, probit and Tobit analyses. In this manner, the paper may suggest a road map for high developed countries to achieve very high developed levels. For this purpose, Human Development Indices of 84 countries were involved in the analysis with respect to nine independent variables. The results of the all regression models indicate that determinants including life expectancy at birth, expected years of schooling, labour force participation rate (female-male ratio), and GDP per capita have statistically significant effects on the level of development.

A Panel Approach: How Does Government Expenditure Influence Human Development Index?

2018

This study investigates the influence of government spending on education index, health index, income index of regional, under-develop and develop governments in East Java, Indonesia. In addition, this paper estimates the influence of government spending on the development of cities and districts in East Java. This study applied a quantitative approach by using the Fixed Effect Model and Random Effect Model as the panel data analysis method. There were 38 cities and districts used as the analysis units during 2010-2015. The findings showed that government spending on education, health, and economic has a positive significant influence on every component of human development index. In addition, government spending on infrastructure has a significant influence on the education index and income index yet it does not significantly influence the health index. Classification of health indicators affecting human development index: a cross-country study

Journal of Research & Health, 2017

The health dimension of Human Development Index (HDI) is currently assessed by life expectancy at Birth. In this regard, the question is whether or not the life expectancy indicator merely can explain the health status of countries. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to determine and classify health indicators affecting human development index. For this purpose, 70 countries were selected as cases, and 27 health indicators were determined as variables. The data were gathered from 2000 to 2012 and analyzed using R-type factor analysis technique within the principal components in software. Based on the obtained results from factor analysis, the examined variables were classified into six main factors including "manageable diseases", "serious diseases", "environmental factors", "quality of health care", "disease preventive services", and "public health expenditure" that explained 73% of the total variance. This finding ind...

This is a quantitative research design that uses secondary panel data, consisting of time series and cross-section data. A panel power regression model (Pooled Least Square) and panel data analysis using Fixed Effect Model (FEM) were used as the analysis method to estimate the impact of Economic Growth, Poverty, and Education Variables on Human Development Index Variables in the Subosukawonosraten area from 2016 to 2020. According to the regression analysis results, the Economic Growth variable has a negative and significant impact on the Human Development Index in the Subosukawonosraten Area, followed by the Poverty variable, which has a negative and significant impact, and the Education variable, that has a positive and significant impact
