Issues of English Language Learners in Communication at Intermediate Level in Pakistan

The students have to face lot of problems in speaking English as a second language (ESL). This study investigates the problems, fears and hindrances in using English language as a speaking tool in and outside class room. The population consists of the students of Intermediate/HSSC level from age group of 16 to 19 years. The study determines the causes of poor communication in English language among higher secondary school students. The descriptive survey design was used and questionnaire was used as a tool in collection of data. Responses were obtained from students and teachers in two higher secondary schools. The study sample was 60, in which 30 were students and 30 were teachers. Frequency and simple percentage were used in the analysis of data. The findings of the study led to the conclusion that the dominance of mother tongue, less qualified teachers of English language, negative attitudes of students toward speaking English language, improper use of method in enhancing English language speaking and no access to instructional media, A.V aids and other facilities, are the reasons behind the poor English language communication of the students. The study also found out that provision of qualified teachers of English language, using the right approach to the spoken ability of English language, engaging of students in debating and listening to English programs are some of the ways that can improve secondary school students' performance in spoken English communication.

The Issues that Cause Problems to Speak English as a Second Language for Undergraduate Students of Sindh, Pakistan

English language speaking is considered one of the most difficult and challenging task for language learners. This is a case study, investigating the speaking difficulties of the students at University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Also highlights the factors that affect student’s practical and communicational aspect of English language. Hopefully the study will be fruitful for the L2 learners in Sindh university context and will lead to possible solutions to enhance the speaking performance of students. To analyze and interpret data, simple percentage tables and graphs were used. The study shows that students were facing number of English speaking problem including lack of vocabulary, grammar illiteracy, shyness, connecting ideas, lack of practice, inappropriate environment, pronunciation and accent. Based on the findings of study, it was recommended that there is need of extra classes on communication practice activities. However, teachers should play their active role to encourage students and to overcome shyness. Teachers should expose Students in front of class by providing maximum opportunities in practical activities. Moreover, vocabulary also plays main role, teacher should engage students in vocabulary building exercises.

Why Do University Students in Pakistan Confront Problems In Spoken English?

Language is a mode of communication between individuals. In Pakistan, English is learned as a second language. The main objective of this study was to identify the problems faced by university students in spoken English. The study was conducted at NUST Balochistan Campus in a time frame of three months. This study was design to evaluate the factors confronted by university students in their spoken English. Exploring English Language Problems of Undergraduate Students at University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan

This study aimed at exploring English Language problems of undergraduate students at Institute of English Language and literature, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan. English as Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) learners face many language problems; thus it was the biggest motivation for the researchers to explore the problems systematically to prepare them better learners. Action research method was employed. It consisted of two phases: reconnaissance and intervention. Data were collected through multiple resources such as semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, classroom observations and note-taking. One hundred twenty students (120) were randomly chosen as respondents. Data were analyzed through 'Interpretive Approach'. Results revealed promising learning outcomes by adopting action research technique. By doing so, the existing gap between teaching and learning was bridged that led to effective learning outcomes of students and professional development of the taught.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CHALLENGES FACED BY THE SECONDARY LEVEL STUDENTS IN SPEAKING ENGLISH IN DISTRICT KOHAT KPK PAKISTAN

Many studies were conducted in the area to uncover problems in Speaking English in various contexts because speaking of language is very important. It is one of the chief characteristics of language that it can be spoken (Barber C, 2000). Therefore this study was conducted on Challenges faced by the Secondary level students in speaking English in district Kohat. The main aim of this study was to investigate the specific challenges and problems faced by the Secondary level students in speaking English. The study hand sought out the challenges and difficulties faced by secondary level students in speaking English in district Kohat and provide possible solution for these problems. Class 10 the students were selected as Participants for this study from 5 Government High Schools in District Kohat namely, GHS Behzadi Chikarkot, GHS No 1 Kohat, GHS No 2 Kohat, Govt. Comprehensive High School Kohat and Govt. Centennial High School No 4 Kohat. The data were collected from 70 students i.e. 14 students were included from each school who were studying in class 10. Data were analyzed through SPSS software. In the present study, Questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection which contains 13 items. The study yielded important results. Some of the problems were highlighted by the study are Social, psychological, and cultural factors that hinder English language speaking proficiency at school level students in district Kohat. The Nature of Difficulties in Learning English by the students at Secondary School level in Pakistan

This study was a comparative investigation into the nature of difficulties in learning English by the secondary school students of Provincial and Federal government schools in N.W.F.P (Khyber Pukhtunkhwa). The objectives of the study were (1)To find out the level of difficulties of secondary school students of Provincial and Federal government schools of N.W.F.P (Khyber Pukhtunkhwa) in tenses, active and passives voices, direct and indirect narrations, conjunctions, prepositions, articles, construction of sentences and reading with comprehension and (2)To compare the level of difficulties in learning English as a second language at secondary level of Provincial and Federal government schools in N.W.F.P (Khyber Pukhtunkhwa). The sample of the study was comprised of 654 randomly selected students from twenty four Provincial government schools and twenty two Federal government schools located in twenty four districts of N.W.F.P. (Khyber Pukhtunkhwa). An English language achievement test for secondary classes was administered to the sample students of the study. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed through SPSS 17.0 software to compute mean, standard deviation, t-value and p-value (significance) level. The main findings of the study were; the students of Provincial government schools faced more difficulties in learning of verb forms, narration, conjunctions, prepositions, articles, sentence arrangements and reading comprehension. The students of both types of schools systems faced same difficulties in learning voices.

Teaching English: The key Issues, Problems and the New Challenges within the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education Hyderabad, Pakistan.

The Education system within the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Hyderabad, Pakistan has been criticised for ineffective teaching and poor implementation of standardized testing . The BISE is well aware of problems and have, introduced drastic measures to help address critical issues as a result. For example, the BISE introduce four measures:(1) introducing the master training program for teachers; (2) introducing vigilance teams to monitor teaching in the classroom; (3) introducing monthly tests to evaluate students" progress; and (4) opening more colleges to reduce the number of students per class. The aim of the current paper is to identify the potential factors affecting the teaching and learning of students in the BISE. Adopting a case study approach, this study suggests that there may be four potential causal factors that undermined the quality of teaching/learning in the BISE: (1) overcrowded classrooms (2) course content (3) teachers" professional development and (4) the examination system. Problems and Difficulties of Speaking That Encounter English Language Students at Al Quds Open University

The study aims at exploring thespeaking difficulties encountered by English language students at Al Quds Open University. The study ,more over aims at exploring the causes of such difficulties. The researcher used the experimental method so as to show and measure the speaking difficulties encountered by English language students at Al Quds Open University. The researcher designed an interview to be applied on the sample of the study. Such interview will be applied for each student to investigate speaking difficulties and the causes of such difficulties . The results showed and indicated there some difficulties in the speaking of the students due to some reasons such as fear of mistake , shyness, anxiety and lack of confidence. The researcher adopted some recommendations the most important one is to establish an environment support and encourage the students to speak English frequently, and he suggested carrying out more researches and studies regarding speaking difficulties encountered by English language students.

The Causes of English Language and Literature Students' Poor English Skills at Kandahar University

Abstract: Abstract: It is expected from under graduate students of English Language and Literature Department to have an acceptable level of accuracy and fluency in language skills in order to successfully complete this field, but majority of students are facing with many problems in language skills. Most of the students are weak in speaking, and are not able to express their views to talk about a topic continuously for few minutes. In addition to that, problems are seen in their pronunciation and grammar. They have serious spelling problems and are unable to write correctly. The purpose of this study was to discover the causes of English Language & Literature students’ poor English language skills at Kandahar University. Hundred Students were selected through the use of systematic random sampling method. This was a descriptive research in which two questionnaires were developed to collect the data from the students and lecturers. The data was analyzed by using IBM 23 version of SPSS and found out the frequency and percentage. The findings showed; Language Differences, lack of effective material, nonprofessional teachers were the reasons of poor English language skills of this research in the context of Kandahar University. The findings also showed the main problem was at pre-university; unprofessional teachers, inappropriate curriculums, lack of materials & tools and lack of students’ interest. The problems were not only existed at school years which caused students’ poor English language Skills, the results also indicated that the ratio between teachers and students was not standard at university level in which adversely effected the quality teaching. These problems raise due to exclusion of English in Kankor exam (entry test for universities), inappropriate curriculum at both departments and lack of educational materials and other factors that limit students’ English language skills improvement.
