Social Media in the Context of Development: A Case Study of Dutch NGOs
This paper presents views of six Dutch development NGOs on possibilities and threats of social media for their work. A systematic analysis of the literature and the systematic analysis of the interviews yield an interesting theoretical framework in which social media characteristics are cross-referenced with NGO organisational characteristics. The resulting preliminary framework of emerging themes suggests that potential disadvantages associated with social media use may impede the organisational use. Furthermore it is suggested that potential organisational uses of social media may motivate use and adaptation of the social media use to a development context. It is also suggested that disadvantages attributed to social media may influence the use or non-use of social media for particular developmental activities.
A Research Approach For Investigating Social Media Use By Dutch Development NGOs
This research project aims at examining social media potential in the sector of Dutch aid & development NGOs. The research question is formulated as: what (issues and opportunities) do the major Dutch development NGOs encounter when using social media to engage their stakeholders with their projects? By stakeholders I mean the donors, fellow non-profit organisations, the NGO's own staff, the local organisations in developing regions and the aid receiving communities in developing countries. Five Dutch Development NGOs active with social media have been analysed. The research design is a combination of an interpretive and critical research study. A qualitative research approach is adopted. The methodology of Grounded Theory combined with a multiple case study is applied and a combination of methods is used for data collection (semi-structured interviews, social media and web pages and reports). The data is analysed using the Grounded Theory method. From the coded data three emergent themes were identified. The findings reveal a preliminary framework for relationships between the concepts related to by the NGO's identified risks and barriers, its perception of social media and the application of social media by the aforementioned NGOs.
The Use of Social Media in Public Relations at Non-Governmental Organisations in South Africa

Social media can be a useful tool in public relations in non-governmental organisations (NGOs), but do NGOs make use of social media in their quest for service delivery in South Africa? Social networking sites, blogging, email, instant messaging, and online journals are some of the technological changes that changed the way interaction between people and how they gather information. Although social media is mainly used for interactive dialogue and social interaction, the private sector soon realised that the web-based technologies (especially Facebook and Twitter) could also be a competitive business tool. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) soon followed suit however at a slower pace than the general communication growth rate of social media in South Africa. Future trends in social media use for strategic organisation

This article examines current uses of social media for communication by enterprises, political organisations and non-profit organisations (NPOs) and identifies likely future trends. Based on a quantitative online survey among 860 communication professionals in Germany and a follow-up qualitative Delphi study with 32 identified experts from the organisational communication profession and academia, it explores the status quo and aims to identify future directions. While organisations show more advanced structures for social media communication compared to earlier research findings, the empirical data also identifies many shortcomings. The potentials of social media communication are not fully exploited due to missing prerequisites including governance structures, rules and resources. Looking into the future, the Delphi panel suggests that dedicated budgets, social media guidelines and other structural aspects will increase in the near future. However, many organisations will find specific ways to deal with the issue and common strategies are rare. At the same time, according to the qualitative findings, social media evaluation and cooperation across the boundaries of departments and organisational functions are likely to stay underdeveloped.
7 Social Media Use in Organizations
The use of social media technologies—such as blogs, wikis, social networking sites, social tagging, and microblogging—is proliferating at an incredible pace. One area of increasing adoption is organizational settings where managers hope that these new technologies will help improve important organizational processes. However, scholarship has largely failed to explain if and how uses of social media in organizations differ from existing forms of computer-mediated communication.

The objectives of study are to determine through empirical research work the innovative ways by which a group of selected multinational corporations in the energy, mining and beverage sectors use social media for corporate social responsibility viz-a-viz how they reach out to stakeholders, and how CSR delivery varies in the developed economies of the West (Germany, Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom) to that of emergent (developing) economies in Africa such as Nigeria and South Africa. The study will borrow extensively from the theories of social network analysis, digital ethnography, theories of organization and management, and the emerging theories of organizational social media to have a deeper and clearer understanding of the subject matter. Due to the large volume of anticipated data from online sources, the collected data shall be subjected to data mining techniques, and the use of machine learning algorithms for predictive and prescriptive data analysis and established statistical analysis for inferences.

The importance and use of social media in the workplace has greatly increased and therefore cannot be ignored in today's information age. Despite the increase in social media usage today, efforts made in understanding the use of these tools in workplaces is still limited especially in developing countries. Very little is known on the ways in which employees and employers in the workplace use social media for it has great influence on work dynamics and can cause problems if left unregulated. Thus, this study sought to investigate how social media is being used in the workplace by both employers and employees, the mostly used public social media in the workplace, the opportunities as well as the challenges that social media presents in the workplace. The focus was on public social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, which are run by commercial providers and are often free. The study involved a survey of literature from both online (mostly on general google and google scholar) and offline materials related to the topic. The findings of the study revealed that organisations and their employees use different kinds of social media tools and services in the workplace. Employers mainly use it in recruitment, collective bargaining and to make visible their products and services and reach out to millions of customers. Employees use social media to operate and communicate on job related issues in a fast and easier way than before resulting in improved productivity, increased efficiency, increased marketing opportunities among other opportunities. On the other hand, the study revealed that social media is misused for non-work related activities by employees such as checking on sport scores, family and friends, downloading music and video, fraud, information leakage, reputation damage, discrimination and many more resulting in decreased productivity. Based on these findings, the paper recommends that organisations should monitor the usage to ensure that employees use social media sites productively and to the interest of the organisation. Employers should also formulate appropriate workplace policies to guide employees on how to use social media for job purposes.

In South Africa, social media has become a popular public relations research topic in nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). This is because NGOs are increasingly integrating social media into their public relations strategies in an effort to engage with the variety of stakeholders by using communication platforms such as Facebook and Twitter that social life takes place, people communicate and share information. This study reviews the current uses, benefits, and limitations of social media in public relations among NGOs and analyses how South African public relations practitioners are experiencing these uses, benefits and limitations of social media in NGOs. Based on theoretical guidelines for social media public relations communication the empirical study employs a qualitative research using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with public relations practitioners in NGOs. The results provide a holistic view of their experience in social media. The key benefits of using social media were identified as theincreasing public relations interactions with audience, improving the accessibility of public relations communication, increasing the speed for feedback and input, social/peer and emotional support, potential to influence the public, improving the long-term cost effective relationship of public relations communication, reaching youth and other audiences on specific issues. The limitations were identified as quality concerns, confidentiality and private information leaking to the public, and the reliability of information.
It’s not about what, it’s about who you know: social media-use in organisations

This paper investigates the impact of social media-use on communication processes within organisations. Findings from three qualitative comparative case studies are analysed through the lens of the resource based view of organisations. The analysis follows comparative logic focusing on similarities and differences in case-settings and outcomes. Each of the cases represents an organisation with similar workforces of similar size, composition and distribution but with qualitatively different approaches to social media-use and, as expected, different effects of social media on processes and capabilities. The findings suggest, that the value of social media in contrast to other IT technologies is derived from its use for relationship-building (who actors are connected to and how) rather than information storage and dissemination (what do actors know and where they find it).
