A Decision Support System for Communication Network Analysis Based on Hybrid Petri Net Models
ArXiv, 2017
It is well known that the complex system operation requires the use of new scientific tools and computer simulation. This paper presents a modular approach for modeling and analysis of the complex systems (in communication or transport systems area) using Hybrid Petri nets. The performance evaluation of the hybrid model is made by a simulation methodology that allows building up various functioning scenarios. A Decision Support System based on the above mentioned methodologies of modeling and analysis will be designed for performance evaluation and time optimization of large scale communication and/or transport systems.
Petri Net Models Optimized for Simulation
Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory [Working Title]
Petri nets and simulation are a modeling paradigm and a tool, respectively, which may be successfully combined for diverse applications, such as performance evaluation, decision support, or training on complex systems. Simulation may require significant computer resources; hence, in this chapter, two Petri net-based formalisms are analyzed for profiting from their respective advantages for modeling, simulation, and decision-making support: a set of alternative Petri nets and a compound Petri net. These formalisms, as well as the transformation algorithms between them, are detailed and an illustrative example is provided. Among the main advantages of these formalisms, their intuitive application for modeling discrete event systems in the process of being designed, as well as the compactness that may present the resulting model, in the case of a compound Petri net, leading to efficient decision making, can be mentioned.

This works aim to propose a Hybrid Decision Support System (HDSS), based in Simulation and Coloured Petri Nets as modelling techniques of manufacture processes, and an Expert System to assist in its use. The HDSS provides a friendly interface for the user that, after selecting input parameters, gets a series of data about the manufacturing process that will assist in the evaluation of its performance as answer. To validate the proposal, some particular scenes have been tested, with the objective of elaborate a set of proposals for improving the performance of productive systems, evaluating the impacts from the change on model parameters and providing a better understanding about the systems considered. The HDSS makes possible for managers, without knowledge of modelling techniques, manipulate data and interact with the models. The developed prototype is generic for applying on general manufacturing processes, making it possible to use it for any industrial plant, since that the inpu...

Place/transition Petri nets, timed Petri nets (here time expresses the duration of separate operations) are used here in order to model, analyse, evaluate performance, and control discrete-event systems. Typical representatives of discrete-event systems are flexible manufacturing systems, transport systems, communication systems, etc. Hybrid Petri nets, more precisely first-order hybrid Petri nets, are used here in order to model, analyse and control hybrid systems. Typical representatives of hybrid systems are manufacturing systems in general - industrial production systems. The systems in question usually consist of cooperating subsystems (modules, agents). Particular approaches are illustrated on four case studies.
Modeling of a Communication Network Under TCP/IP Protocol Using Hybrid Petri Nets
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2003
On one hand, controlled systems via computer networks become a necessity in current industrial context. Indeed, it is more and more important to be able to control systems located on different sites without having to move. On the other hand, the communication networks, due to their limited flows and capacities storage imply delays of transmission and losses of messages. This paper presents a study of the influence of a communication network on the remote control. We have chosen to use Internet with TCP/IP protocol since it is the most used communication system in the world. In a communication canal , the flow of messages can be approximated as a continuous flow while the route decisions or the acknowledgments have a discrete behavior. It is why we have used Hybrid PNs in order to model and to analyze the communication network. Computers networks are a new application domain for hybrid PNs. Detailed graphical models of the complex functions met in Internet network. such as the congestion avoidance are obtained by using hybrid PNs.
An interactive Petri net tool for modeling, analysis and simulation of complex systems
1996 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics. Information Intelligence and Systems (Cat. No.96CH35929), 1996
In this paper we present an interactive tool for complex systems modeling, analysis and simulation using Petri Nets and their temporal extensions. The proposed tool is based on user real time interaction and multiprogramming. Three user interactive steps are allowed: editing, analyzing and simulation. To introduce real time user interaction the tool uses a set of functions that allows to edit and simulate temporal behavior of the Petri net, i. e., programmable places, counters, timing and statistical routines. It executes a non preemptive Round Robin escalonator, that uses randomic functions, and implements a real time executive, consisting in a multiprocessing system.

The term Decision Support System (DSS) are much appreciated in highly complex environments where problems or tasks have varying degrees of structuration. Computer-based DSS to support decision making abound in elaborate functionality but they are often difficult to use effectively in real business environment, and are therefore often not used at all. In the paper the DSS for choice alternative of routes in the large-scale transportation transit system embedding the heuristic approach and integrating simulation was developed. Practical realization of DSS simulation on the base of Petri Net model is proposed. Transport system as complex and safety-critical is one of the main application of various DSS. Process of E-net model design for choice alternative of routes in the large-scale transportation transit system includes the heuristic decision-making construction according to general scheme, formal method for transformation of heuristic decision-making construction into the Petri Net model and base set of modelling elements for above-mentioned transformation procedure and software tools. The detailed rules for design of Petri Net model make it easy to transform the initial heuristic selection criteria in formalized procedures of model construction.

This article deals with the study and analysis of a multi-modal transportation system (MTS) consisting of a bus shuttle connecting two passengers exchange stations belonging each to another transportation mode (as train lines in our case). The MTS is studied in this paper as a hybrid dynamical system (HDS). The purpose of this paper is to model, simulate and evaluate the performances of the MTS by a colored hybrid Petri nets based model (CHPNs). Owing to the developed model it is possible to analyze the system evolution over time and evaluate passengers waiting times in the two exchange stations. In addition, we show how the number of used buses on the network impact the passengers waiting times. With the aim to illustrate and validate the proposed approach, a concrete scenario is studied. Performed simulations and obtained results are reported and analyzed.
Simulation of Railway Stations based on Hybrid Petri Nets
Analysis and Design of Hybrid Systems 2006, 2006
The purpose of this paper is to present a simulation model for Railway Stations (RS). Firstly, through a systemic description, we have shown that a RS can be considered as a Hybrid Dynamical System (HDS). Then, in order to represent the main intrinsic characteristics of RS, we have built a hybrid Petri net-based model. This model has been analyzed for i) checking purposes, and ii) evaluating some qualitative properties of the system. Finally, for illustrating the suggested methodology of study, a typical subway station has been simulated through a rush period scenario. Owing to a quantitative analysis of the marking evolution of the hybrid model, it is possible to make a performance evaluation of the station facilities and to underline some structural and functional limits of the studied station. Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, 2001
Petri nets (PNs) are widely used to model discrete event dynamic systems (computer systems, manu- facturing systems, communication systems, etc). Continuous Petri nets (in which the markings are real numbers and the transition firings are continuous) were defined more recently; such a PN may model a continuous system or approximate a discrete system. A hybrid Petri net can be obtained
