Segmentation and Recognition of Gujarati Printed Numerals from Image

Recognition of numerals in an image is very difficult issue because there is no prior knowledge about the color of numerals, distribution of lighting, noise, complexity of background, shape similarity etc. To the best of our knowledge, there is no work reported for segmentation and recognition of Gujarati printed numerals from an image. In this paper, we have discussed the problems of segmentation and recognition of Gujarati printed numerals from an image. We have also adopted simple approach to address this problem. We have used edge detection, dilation and connected component analysis for segmentation. Various heuristics are used to find candidate object for Gujarati numeral. For classification, template matching is used. The experimental results have proved its effectiveness. We have tested our model on different types of images and have achieved success of more than 95%. I.
