The present study tries to analyze a relation of reports on sports with pragmatic communicative structures. The communicative structures are analyzed through two basic concepts of pragmatics. They are speech acts and cooperative principles. The idea of dialectical application has been worked by Walton (1995). The application of Walton (1995) tended to analyze reports of Pakistani sports. The types of sports selected for this study are cricket, table tennis and Kabaddi. The communicative structures in reports are taken from the two renowned newspapers "The Dawn" and "The News". The aim of this study is served through eclectic paradigm. The data is quantitatively analyzed with discussion. The two basic concepts of pragmatics have given a view that no chief differences lies after analyses of different games with application of different strategies employed by reporter for accomplishment of above discussed critical tool.
ABSTRACT The dynamism in the language of journalism has become an aspect which attracts contemporary scholars. It requires specific attention because its style affords writers the opportunity to manipulate the language to suit their contextual purposes. This study therefore attempted a stylistic analysis of the language of sports in selected Nigerian Newspapers. It examined the stylistic features of selected sports columns from the pragmatic point of view. To carry out this study, a descriptive qualitative analysis was employed as the methodological framework. Twenty five (25) newspaper sentences were selected as they are directly curled from twenty five (25) newspaper articles on sports. Most of the articles were recently articles addressing the just concluded 2019 African Confederation Cup of Nations (AFCON). Jacob Mey’s Pragmatic act theory was adopted as the theoretical model that guided the analysis of the data. In the course of the analysis, the pragmatic act features were categories into the activity part and the textual part. Under the activity part, five pragmatic acts (practs) were identified by this study as adopted by the newspaper columnists to communicate relevant information to their readers. They are the PRACT OF COMPETING, PRACT OF APPRECIATING, PRACT OF BARGAINING, PRACT OF HOPE and PRACT OF FITNESS. Out of these practs, the pract of COMPETING and HOPE are the most recurrent pract in the study. The textual part reveals the existence of the Mutual Contextual Belief (MCB) or Situational Shared Knowledge (SSK) that exists between the columnists and the readers. The study found out that the identification of this contextual knowledge shared between them helps in the interpretation of meaning. The use of METAPHOR (MPH) has been identified as one of the pragmatic cues utilized as tool of communication in sports articles. As in the case of Metaphor, the study identified the following metaphor: “SPORTS is COMPETITION” where the “PARTICIPANTS are either LOSERS or WINNERS”. The study concludes that the use of language in the newspaper discourse is context based. The effect of such pragmatic forces (practs) on readers is that readers are lured into active reading of the ensuing news story to isolate the relevant linguistic force. The reader is therefore expected as a mark of pragmatic competence to understand columns not only as propositions but as practs. The choice of an utterance is often made to capture the mood of the story and to surreptitiously sway the reader’s feelings in favour of the writer’s opinion.

Existing studies on media reports have largely focused on the study of speech acts, ideological constructions, critical discourse analysis and pragmatics. The present study looks into the pragmatic functions of language use in 2010 world cup football reporting in selected Nigerian newspapers. On the Discourse of Online Sports News Headlines

Sports discourse is one of the most common types of discourses today. It is regarded to be one of the types of media discourses which is supposed to display mainly features of description and commentary, with a unique, specialized vocabulary. This study focuses on sports news headlines published online. One of the objectives of the study is to establish some of the markers with respect to lexical choices, events, and formulation of content. Another objective is to see what ideologies these headlines may reveal.
A Discursive Representation of the Winner and Loser: The Case of Sports Reports
Communicating ideas/news is the primary function of language. However, language does not usually fulfill this as it is expected to. To Dellinger (1995, p. 3) language, " can never appear by itself-it always appears as the representative of a system of linguistic terms, which themselves realize discursive and ideological system. " The present study, analyzing sports articles, aims at investigating the nature and importance of discourse in representing the desired players/ or teams. In other words, it is to examine the ways in which different teams are discursively constructed. More specifically, it shows how 'our' team versus 'other' (rival) team is shaped discursively. To do this, Hodge and Kress' (1996) model for Critical Discourse Analysis provides the framework with which the following texts have been approached. Four sport extracts, selected from two different issues of two different sport editorials, comprised the corpus of the study. The texts are analyzed with regard to three important properties of texts, i.e., grammar (with regard to two properties: syntagmatic models and transformations), vocabulary (functioning as adjectives, adverbs, and verbs, with their ideological significance), and modality (the degree of authority and certainty of an utterance). The study has revealed how the reporters, while apparently providing the readers with the information about the matches and important events, represent 'ours' and 'others' in the selected texts the way they like and, thereby, influence the ideology of the reader.
PRAGMA-STYLISTIC MANIFESTATIONS IN SPORT DISCOURSE FROM SELECTED RADIO STATIONS IN IBADAN METROPOLIS

Language is a complex human-specific system of communication. It is the only means by which people in a speech community communicate among themselves. Pragma-stylistic is one of the types of context-oriented stylistics that has to do with speech act stylistics. Its contributions to the field of stylistics have made the study of language an interesting one. The need to ascertain whether sport presenters on the radio employ speech acts in their conversation motivates this study. A pragma-stylistic model of literary analysis is presented and applied to analyse the sport discourse from selected radio stations in Ibadan metropolis. The conversations are analysed as a cohesive chunk so as to examine the direct and indirect illocutionary acts, the perlocutionary effects, the various contexts and competencies that are inherent in the sport discourse. The major results of the analyses indicate that the participants engage in conversation so as to do things with words.
A Lexico-Semantic Analysis of the Language of Sports Reporting in a Nigerian Sports Magazine
The paper examines the role of language in the successful communication of sports with particular focus on aspects of Lexico-semantic variations of Nigerian English, to identify the typologies, their essence and significance for sports communication. Using the Sports Magazine, Complete Football International as source of data, the findings reveal that apart from the conventional categories, the lexico-semantic variations employed on the sports pages include some distinct forms which may be traced to constraints of professional ethics, and the creative efforts of sport writers. Pragmatic and Semantic Potential of Newspaper Headlines

This paper aims at throwing a light on the interrelationship of pragmatics and semantics in terms of avoiding misunderstanding and miscommunication between the speaker/writer and hearer/reader. For this purpose, we restrict the sphere with the analysis of headlines from BBC news whose meanings are interpreted by using presuppositional and entailment techniques. Although semantics is concerned only with the literal meaning of the words and their interrelations, pragmatic usage pays attention to the importance of the so called inferred meaning that the speakers and listeners perceive. Presupposition and entailment refer to two different aspects of information. In presupposition, it is the speakers' circumstantial knowledge while in entailments, it is a conclusion that speakers arrive as a definite type of consequence. Headlines subjectively give clues about or express the most important aspect of the text combining in themselves both semantic and pragmatic meanings and for our analysis of discourse, we will refer to media as a specific form of discourse that is itself a power resource and how media can influence people's minds, e.g., their knowledge or opinions, revealing integration of among which is the major concerns of the paper.
