Abstract
This digital encyclopedia article discusses the contributions of Mathilde Franziska Anneke who founded the first newspaper for women in German lands in 1848. She is perhaps the most famous woman of the "Forty-Eighters," individuals who participated in the 1848 revolutions in Europe to promote democratic and worker rights. She also founded the first newspaper for women in the US in 1852 (Milwaukee, WI). She was a close friend of Susan B. Anthony, a passionate suffragette, abolitionist, writer, and founder of a Girls Academy in Milwaukee. Thanks to her pioneering efforts and the women who came after her, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote.
