The Development of the Four Skills Course: An Introductory Course in the Career English Program
Class Title: Four Skills Context: Integrated and multi-skills instruction are not common in Japan where language learning is usually divided into a grammar/reading portion and a listening/speaking portion, each taught by different teachers. The separation of the skills and teachers fails to offer students a holistic view of language and how it is used. To address this issue, KSU has developed the Four Skills course, which makes use of bottom-up and top-down skills in conjunction with very little focus-on-form instruction. There are approximately one hundred students in first, second, and third year students, all of whom have scored over 140 on the TOEIC Bridge Achievement Test before the start of the school year, enrolled in the course. Goals: The Program’s aims are to help students develop better English listening, reading, writing and speaking abilities within the pedagogical framework using a student-centered communicative approach. Syllabus Content: Course syllabus and material was designed within a socio-constructive perspective and following the Hattie (2009) model for teacher-student and peer feedback. The approach to teacher-student interaction in the Four Skills course, and how it is integrated into the main components of the course is one that is conducive to collaborative learning. Observations: The number of students electing to attend the Four Skills course has gradually increased over the past three years and this has been coupled with a greater retention of those students. The TOEIC scores of students attending the course have also increased over the same period. Future Directions: Development of the online component of the course could greatly enhance students’ understanding of the course and its main aims and objectives as well as supplementing key syllabus content.
