Current trends on teaching instrumentation and measurement

1999

This manuscript presents the views of the persons invited to speak at the panel discussion session “Current trends on teaching instrumentation and measurement” of the IMTC'99. The discussion is trying to examine common ideas and directions between different contemporary educational efforts to teach modern instrumentation and measurement effectively. The presentations are mainly focused on the basics; the contents of I&M-related courses, not the various technology-based tools for teaching. The different approaches to I&M education presented here, certainly do not provide ideal solutions for teaching this subject to any given class. The goal is to give a set of triggering contributions useful to the interested teachers of I&M related courses anywhere in the world. This discussion is organized by the technical committee on education for instrumentation and measurement of the IEEE I&M society

Instrumentation and measurement course for nonelectrical engineering students

IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine - IEEE INSTRUM MEAS MAG, 2006

There is a need for high quality and quantity of education that gives due consideration to the rapid changes in technology. Instrumentation and measurement provide an introduction to multiple engineering disciplines. It was observed from students' exit questionnaires that their interest and satisfaction with this core course increased with more laboratory work, more problem-solving skills, and less analysis and theory. The course coordinator tried to maintain the four program educational objectives by introducing modern techniques to stimulate their interest in the course. The EE department opened the instrumentation and control laboratory door to students performing experiments without close instructor guidance to encourage self-learning. If some student does not understand the observed and obtained results, he/she may call for an instructor's help. Later, the student analyzed, interpreted, and gave sound comments and justifications in a report. Each semester recommendati...
