How digital libraries can support e-learning
The Electronic Library, 2006
Digital libraries offer opportunities for elearning that are not possible in their physical counterparts. Digital libraries complement other learning environments, such as those provided in distance education and courses offered online, and like e-learning environments, they provide flexibility of time and place. Digital libraries have the potential to offer unprecedented resources for supporting e-learning. Access to current research and needed information within a well developed infrastructure can provide faculty members and students with a unique opportunity to do deep research and to teach and learn more thoroughly. The paper addresses and discusses such aspects as what is meant by "e-learning", and how can it be supported by library environment, what is the functionality of digital library; and how the e-learning resources are included and organized in digital library. This paper will also explore the advantages of digital libraries for e-learning and the types of learning that can be supported by digital libraries. There is undoubtedly a keenness to use online information resources for research and teaching, but this seems to be matched by a lack of awareness of how best to integrate these resources into e-learning environment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role and influence of digital libraries and online resources on e-learning.
Digital libraries and its role on supporting E-Learning
Problem Statement: in twenty first century change is considered key element and makes lots of challenges for individuals' life which most imposed in result of technology influence. Education is one of areas that have been affected form technology. In recent years, by development of information and communication technologies, new forms of education appeared named web or online learning. Purpose of Study: The aim of this paper is to review digital libraries' role in supporting e-learning. Methods: at first a definition of digital library is provided and then differences are discussed between it and traditional one and at the end eLearning definition and position of digital libraries are explored in providing new form of education. Findings and Results: with attention to online education based on web there is lots of advantage in comparison with traditional libraries, like as place and time limitless, possibility of information representation in multimedia form, and creating equivalent educational opportunities for every nation. It caused to notice to this kind of education accurately. Digital libraries unlike traditional one can make services and library resources available via internet, to support eLearning.
Bridging the Gap between Digital Libraries and e-Learning
Digital Libraries (DL) are offering access to a vast amount of digital content, relevant to practically all domains of human knowledge, which makes it suitable to enhance teaching and learning. Based on a systematic literature review, this article provides an overview and a gap analysis of educational use of DLs.
Role of E-Learning in Library and Information Science
2006
ABSTRACT The potentialities of information technology have been forcing various organizations to go electronic in order to reposition themselves toward a sustainable future. This has also happened to libraries. The article discusses such aspects as what is meant by “e-learning”, scope, advantage and disadvantage for learner and instructor and how can it be pursued and managed in digital library environment and its impact on teaching in library and information science.
ACADEMIC LIBRARIES AND E-LEARNING: INITIATIVE AND OPPORTUNITIES
E-learning is technique means a learning technique in which user may use different technologies, internet, computer technology, and multimedia and it may be replacing the conventional educational system at for extent. E-learning gives new dimensions to higher education and as well as other areas of education. This paper highlights the basic concept of e-learning, its advantages, disadvantages, tools for e-learning and also further discuss about the participation of academic libraries in the e-learning. (2003) defines the delivery of an e-learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e. a mobile phone) in some ways to provide training, educational or learning material.
E_Learning: Future trends and challenges to academic libraries
International Journal of Information Technology & Computer Science ( IJITCS ) Vol 2. ISSN (Online ) : 2091 - 1610 | Pages : 59 - 67 , 2012
The revolutions in publishing industry made massive changes and had transition from print to e-publishing due to use of ICT. The trends in publishing made the development of e-publications and the print format converted into e-books, e-journals, e-reports, databases etc. This change in format is accepted by the contributors, editors, producers, publishers and libraries also due to its specialized characteristics and economy at many levels. E-publication made drastic changes in the collection development, management and practices of the libraries. The users are more prone towards the use of technology specifically ICT in contribution of knowledge. The academic environment is also changing from formal education to distance learning and online learning mode because of ICT. E-learning is more popular day by day. The academic institute's educational system is changing and in such cases libraries have to change their practices to suit the need of e-learning. This paper highlights the impact of elearning over the academic libraries and the challenges faced by the libraries. E-publishing, e-learning go hand in hand and there is a need to find how libraries could support to this change. This paper is a review of e-learning need, demands of users for e-learning, support from the libraries in terms of services based on web etc.
E-LEARNING IN LIBRARIES – AN OVERVIEW
E-Learning as an advanced system for learning through ICT is an engine of innovation in education. E-learning is a process of education using computer, telecommunication, networks, and storage technology. The present paper covers, what is E-learning, technological tools used for elearning categories of E-Learning and its role of in LIS professionals.
E-learning and e-libraries – Quo vadis?
2012
The objective of this paper is to discuss the implications of the model of e-learning for university libraries in terms of information organization and dissemination. The following will be discussed: • The role of the university library regarding the aggregation of content and resources, customization of information portals and value adding, and the changes in educational models. • E-learning at the University of Pretoria: Case studies and the role of the library in supporting these programmes. • Challenges for university libraries when e-learning comes of age, e.g. electronic packaging of information in direct support of teaching and learning processes, customization and personalization of information on behalf of clients, electronic publishing, education in info literacy skills and personal information management. Perhaps a decade from now we will enjoy reflecting back on the progress we have made in transforming libraries in electronic communication centres: if only we could get our librarians on board.
E-LEARNING APPROACHES IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE EDUCATION
There has been an increasing interest in e-learning in LIS education during last decade. With the developing technology; the purpose, content, methods and skills of education have changed. E-learning is essentially the computer and network enabled transfer of skills and knowledge .E-learning applications and processes include web-based learning; Computer based learning, virtual education opportunity and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the internet, intranet/ extranet, audio or video tapes, satellite, TV and CD-ROM. E-examination, e-drills, e-books, e-counseling, e-sound books are some of the common application form of e-learning which facilitate both the teacher and students to enhance their competencies .To create e-leaning content, the pedagogical approaches like behaviorism, cognitivism, social constructivism,
ELECTRONIC LEARNING AND THE CHALLENGES
This study gives an insight into e-learning and library services as well as the challenges posed in this digital age. It highlights the need and benefit, for library services and advocates the establishment of e-library unit and proposes for information librarian to manage e-library resources. It is hoped that when the challenges of e-learning initiatives for library services are met, it will increase access, improve services, establish shearing partners with patrons, distance and widely dispersed e-learners and with other institutions in the world. In conclusion, there is need for the institutions to investigate alternative and independent means of access to information highway or internet for teaching learning and research purposes through such means as satellite communications, training and re-training of information librarians. In line with the above challenges, it is therefore recommended that all academic libraries in Nigeria must provide lecturers and student's access to the e-library data bases (internet), and to ensure that information from the database flow from Nigerian institutions to the global database for accessing through the internet.
