Evaluation Of Knowledge, Attitude And Practice (KAP) About Oral Health Among Secondary Level Students Of Rural Nepal - A Questionnaire Study

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) about oral health among the secondary level students of rural Nepal. Study Design: A total of 1000 secondary level school children (622 male, 378 female) of age group 13 to 18 years were selected for the study. Data on oral health knowledge, attitudes and practice was collected by means of 30 self-administered close ended questionnaires. Results: The result of this study show that only 35.1% of the study sample brushes their teeth at least twice daily while 64.9% reported regular brushing once daily. 66.3% of the study population was aware that gingival bleeding reflects gingivitis and only 48% knew the significance of dental plaque. Only 20% reported that they were regular dental attendees, while only 19 % of the respondent visited dentist only when they got dental pain. Background: Healthy and well‑functioning teeth in all phases of life is a necessity. Teeth help in proper mastication of food as well as in word pronunciation. It gives fullness to the face, thereby helping in the social appearance of a person. Oral health and systemic health are interconnected. Past studies indicate that oral diseases cause or increase the severity of noncommunicable diseases. The general public is unaware of this connection. Thus, the present research work was planned to assess the oral hygiene practices of students and their awareness for maintenance of oral health. Research Methodology: The presentsurvey was conducted among 510 students(135 boys and 335 girls) in the age group of 17–30 years studying in Dayalbagh Educational Institute. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the standard tool of oral health questionnaire by the WHO. Results and Discussion: The result of the present study showed that 93% of the students were using toothpaste and toothbrush for cleaning teeth, but only 31% and 2% of the students were using other measures such as mouthwash and floss. Data also showed that only 44% of the students brush twice a day and only 27% visit dentist for routine checkup. Conclusion: Majority of the students were aware of the linkage between oral health and systemic health. Thus, it is essential to organize oral health education program at mass level to create awareness in public so that not only their oral health but also their general health can be improved.

Background: Attractive smile is a sign of good health. Oral health plays an important role in individuals overall health. Majority of systemic diseases have oral manifestations. Methods: The cross sectional study was carried out amongst the medical students of an Medical college by using WHO ORAL SURVEY for adults, with aims and objectives of estimating the prevalence and severity of oral health problem in the study population, understand and analysis various determinants of diseases of oral cavity and to create awareness on oral health. Results: Out of the 250 repondents, 40% of respondent said, the condition of tooth is very good, which is a sign of good oral hygiene. 13% of the participant said they have never visited a dentist.23%of the participants said; they visited the dentist in last 6-12 months. 32% felt it is necessary to visit dentist regularly. Conclusions: Oral diseases have a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals, their participation in society and economic productivity as well as on health systems, making oral diseases a significant public health concern. Pain and discomfort from cavities, can affect the ability of an individual to chew and to obtain adequate nutrition, which, in turn, affects the immune response and the ability to fight disease.

Assessment of Oral Health Knowledge, Attitude and Practices among the Pre-clinical and Clinical Dental Students of Three Dental Colleges in Calicut District-A Questionnaire Based Cross- Sectional Study

Background: Education of oral health of the individual and community has a major impact from the knowledge of the dentists, which ultimately depends on the knowledge, attitude and practices of the dental students. Dental students are the future leaders in oral-health care, and have a significant role to play in public oral health education and its promotion.Increased awareness of the oral health care among the dental students through academic learning can motivate their patients for the maintenance of the oral health and prevention of the development of the different oral diseases. Dental students in general have been found to have oral health knowledge, but their attitude and oral hygiene practices needs improvement if they are to serve as positive models for their patients, families, and friends.Therefore this present study aims to assess the oral health knowledge, attitude and behaviour among the Pre-clinical and Clinical dental students in the three Dental Colleges in Calicut district. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional 25 point Questionnaire was distributed among the dental students of the three dental colleges in Calicut district. The scores obtained from the responses were entered and analysed using the statistical analysis software SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics was calculated, and mean scores, standard deviation, and frequency distribution was obtained. The difference of the oral health knowledge, attitude and practices between dental students was assessed by Student's t-test Results: A statistically significant knowledge and Attitude Scores was observed for clinical students when compared with preclinical students. But when oral hygiene practices are analyzed it is seen that the preclinical students have higher scores when compared to clinical students. A statistically significant higher mean score of knowledge and oral hygiene practices for female students was observed when compared to male students. But in relation to the attitude scores, the male students showed higher mean scores than female students Conclusion: The findings of the present study shows that the knowledge of the preclinical dental students is low compared to the clinical students. The oral-health attitude and practices of dental students' needs improvement with the increase in the level of education. So, adequate measures should be undertaken to reinforce positive attitude and oral hygiene practices in clinical students, so as to motivate their patients for maintenance of oral health and prevention of different oral diseases.

Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out amongst the patients visiting the Department of Public health dentistry at MNR dental college and hospital, Sangareddy. A total of 216 patients were given a structured questionnaire with 15 questions. Responses from the patients were evaluated in terms of numbers and percentages. Results Most of the subjects had poor knowledge pertaining to oral hygiene practices. Nearly 47% do not consider using a tongue cleaner. Conclusion Implementation of various oral health programs highlighting the basic oral care regimen is necessary for improving oral health care.

Oral Hygiene Practices and Knowledge about Dental Caries among 15 years Old School Students in Lahore Population : A Cross Sectional Survey

Background: Dental Caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in childhood in developed and underdeveloped countries. As oral hygiene, dietary habits, behavioral factors, sociodemographic factors, awareness of the disease and its prevention are concerned, all are important to be known by an individual of a community or society. Fifteen years age group adolescents have erupted all permanent teeth in the oral cavity and this age group children are developing their habits, so these habits will persist through out their life. It was important to know their oral hygiene habits and the concept about the dental caries. It is beneficial to identify children at increased risk and associated predictive factors of caries and tooth brushing in childhood and adolescence in our population. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of dental caries (DMFT), oral hygiene practices and knowledge about tooth decay in 15 years age school going children. Methods: After the approval of institutional review board this study was conducted in the schools of Lahore having summer camp in July 2015. Study participants were school children, aged 15 years. Students of 9th and 10th classes attending summer camp were the sample of the study. A total 60 respondents were included in the study. Written permission was taken before their examination and interview. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect information regarding oral hygiene practices and knowledge about the dental caries. Data entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Data was assessed by percentage and frequency, descriptive part was used for demographic variables, oral hygiene practices. To records the caries experience, Decayed, Missing, filled (DMF) caries index was used. The impact of all variables on status of caries was also analyzed by cross tabulation. To see impact of demographic variable, parents' education was selected as important variable. Chi-Square test of association was performed to see the relationship between father education and caries status. This regression was performed by using backward elimination method at five steps as Logistic Regression for the Prediction of Caries Status on Basis of oral hygiene Habits. P-value ≤0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Total participants were sixty as n=60.Majority (80%) of the subjects or participants of the study were males and remaining were females. Total fifty-eight-point three percent (58.3%) respondents were caries free in this study while caries positive were 41.7 %. Total decayed teeth were 61 %, Missed teeth were 04 and total Filled (restored) teeth were 07% in the sample. Average DMFT score examined was 1.2. Among the respondents 43.3% said that they used to brush once a day, 48.3% twice a day and only 1 person had not the habit of doing brush. Similarly, only 5% had the habit of dental floss once or more times a day. Only 23.3% respondents were involved in doing Miswak once or twice a day. Very few number 11.7% were involved in using Manjan once or twice a day. But on the other side, 58.3% had the habit of water rinsing three or more times a day. Good oral health is the condition of free of illnesses that empowers to perform ordinary capacities. It is accounted for that there is a cozy connection between oral illnesses and other foundational diseases like diabetes, digestive disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, adverse pregnancy outcomes, obesity, et al. So, it is important to maintain good oral health and one must have knowledge of oral health and how to maintain dental and oral hygiene. The main objective of this study is to identify the knowledge of oral health among 35 to 45-year people of Rural Nepal. the study had adopted the mixed design (method)both quantitative and qualitative tools were used to collect the data. It was a cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in four Rural Municipalities of Lalitpur district: Gotikhel, Chaughare, Malta and Bhardah. The data was collected from 369 respondents by using the structured survey questionnaire. The majority of people (68%) reported that they had heard of oral disease. Though, still, 32% had no knowledge of oral health. There was a significant association between the literate and illiterate on the basis of hearing about the oral disease because of p =.000 which is lesser than .05 significant level. Radio and Television were the main source of getting knowledge of oral health. All the household may not have equal access on the Radio and Television program so there was a need to organize the awareness campaign in rural society to aware the people.
