Aspects of Science Engagement, Student Background, and School Characteristics: Impact on Science Achievement of U.S. Students

2016

OF DISSERTATION ASPECTS OF SCIENCE ENGAGEMENT, STUDENT BACKGROUND, AND SCHOOL CHARACTERISTICS: IMPACTS ON SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT OF U.S. STUDENTS Science achievement of U.S. students has lagged significantly behind other nations; educational reformers have suggested science engagement may enhance this critical measure. The 2006 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) was science-focused and measured science achievement along with nine aspects of science engagement: science self-efficacy, science self-concept, enjoyment of science, general interest in learning science, instrumental motivation for science, future-oriented science motivation, general value of science, personal value of science, and science-related activities. I used multilevel modeling techniques to address both aspects of science engagement and science achievement as outcome variables in the context of student background and school characteristics. Treating aspects of science engagement as outcome variables p...

STUDENTS LEARNING PREFERENCE AND STUDENT'S ENGAGEMENT IN SCIENCE OF SECONDARY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

IJARW, 2024

This research explores how different learning preferences affect secondary high school students' engagement in science classes. Learning preferences refer to the ways students like to receive and process information, such as visual (seeing), auditory (listening), and kinesthetic (doing). The study aims to understand how these preferences influence students' interest, participation, and academic performance in science. Using surveys with high school students, the results show that students generally have a high preference for learning in various ways. However, the connection between specific learning styles and student engagement in science is not very strong. The findings suggest that while learning preferences are important, other factors like motivation and interest in science play a crucial role in engagement. To improve student engagement, the study recommends that teachers use a variety of teaching methods that cater to different learning styles. This includes using visual aids, discussions, and hands-on activities. The research highlights the need for further studies to explore other factors that affect student engagement in science.

The Relation Between Elementary School Students' Science Success and Science Attitude, Anxiety, Interest

2018

Science course for students is the first step in science for them. This study has been done to find out the relation between students’ success in science lessons and interest, attitude and anxiety towards the science. The correlational survey method was used in this research. The universe of the study is the 4th grade students attending to the elementary schools in Amasya City in 2016-2017 academic year and the sample consists of 211 students. The Unit Light and Sound Achievement Test, The Scale of Interest Towards Science, The Scale of Anxiety towards Science, The Scale of Attittude towards Science and the personal information form are the data collecting tools. The data was analysed in the SPSS 20.0 programme. It has been found out in the analyses the students’ success, attittudes and interests are over average, their anxiety is low. No meaningful difference in terms of gender has been found out in the student achievement, attittude, anxiety and the interest. It has been con...

Science Engagement Scale: Adaptation, Validation and Reliability Study

2020

In this study, The Science Engagement Scale developed by Wang et al. (2016) was adapted to Turkish and the validity / reliability studies were conducted. The original version of the scale consists of 4 dimensions and 33 items. These dimensions are; cognitive engagement, behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and social engagement. During the adaptation phase, the items were translated into Turkish by three experts. The Turkish forms were examined and the draft form of the scale was obtained by the researchers. Then, the two experts of the two languages were examined through the language equivalence expert form for word usage and cultural suitability. The participants of the study consisted of 519 students in 6., 7., and 8. grades studied at two secondary schools in a small scale city in south east of Turkey during the 2019–2020 academic year. Convenience sampling method was used to determine the participants. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to the data obtained ...

Comparing Students' Science Motivation and their Achievement in Science Subjects at Secondary

Global Social Sciences Review, 2024

The study was designed to compare science motivation and science achievement (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) based on student gender and school location in Okara district. Using the cluster random sampling technique, 1000 students of 10th grade were selected as a sample of this study. An Urdu version of the Science Motivation Questionnaire was developed by the authors and used to collect data about student motivation towards science subjects, i.e., Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The student achievement data were collected from their respective schools. The scale, which included five factors: self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, self-determination, grade motivation, and career motivation demonstrated overall high-level reliability (α=.88) with factor-wise reliability ranging from .77 to .82. The study revealed that male students were significantly better than female students in Physics and Chemistry motivation, while female students were better in biology motivation. The recommendations have also been given in the study.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT ON STUDENTS' SCIENCE ENGAGEMENT IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS

IJARW, 2024

This research study investigates the relationship of classroom environment in students' science engagement among students in the private school Stella Matutina Academy of Bukidnon, Inc. for the school year 2024-2025. The study aims to 1. Determine the quality of classroom environment in terms of; physical layout of the classroom, classroom atmosphere and teacher interaction. 2.Examine the level of students' science engagements in the aspect of; participation in class activities, own motivation to learn, persistence in answering problem solving, and 3. Investigate the relationship of classroom environment on the students' science engagement The study involved ninety-five students. Survey questionnaire were utilized, to gathered data. SPSS were used to get the mean and Pearson correlation value. Research finding were; the learning environment plays a pivotal role in fostering academic engagement among students. A supportive classroom climate has been shown to positively impact students' self-efficacy and engagement levels. Effective classroom management and teacher support are crucial for cultivating this positive climate. The physical aspects of the classroom, including layout, resources, and noise levels, also significantly affect student engagement. Studies suggest that classrooms designed to facilitate interaction and collaboration lead to higher levels of student participation and satisfaction.

Searching for the relationship between secondary schools students' motivation and science achievement

This study aims to search students' science learning motivation in relation with some variables (such as having a separate study room at home and a personal computer) and the effect of motivational factors on students' science achievement. In the study, descriptive corelational survey model has been used to examine students' motivation in relation with some variables and to search the relationship between students' science learning motivation and their TEOG exam scores. The sample of the study consisted of 232 8 th grade students attending 3 state secondary schools in Kahramanmaraş during 2013-2014 academic year. Students' motivation level has been determined by administering SMTSL. Students' average scores of the TEOG exam have been considered as their science achievement. The findings show that female students' motivation level is higher than the male students. In addition, it has been observed that female students' motivation is higher in sub-categories of active learning strategies, science learning value and achievement goal. There is a direct relationship between the students' motivation and their TEOG scores. This shows that students with higher levels of motivation have higher success in TEOG.

Science Teaching and Learning Activities and Students' Engagement in Science

International Journal of Science Education, 2011

The purpose of this analysis is to describe the variation in students' reports of engagement in science across science teaching and learning activities. In addition, this study examines student and school characteristics that may be associated with students' levels of engagement in science. Data are drawn from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2006 study. The analysis employs a quantitative approach that includes descriptive and inferential statistics to examine three measures of student engagement for a nationally representative sample of approximately 12,000 15-year-old students in the UK. The main results indicate that there is an association between students' motivation towards science, enjoyment of science and future orientation towards science, and the frequency in which various teaching and learning activities take place in the classroom. Understanding student engagement in science and the factors that influence it is essential in addressing the issue of uptake of science after compulsory schooling.
