Impact of Orientation Programmes on Fresh Students in the Colleges of Education in Ghana: A Case of St. Monica’s College of Education

The focus of the paper was to find out how orientation programmes at Saint Monica’s College impact on the fresh students in the College and find ways through which such programmes could be strengthen. The study adopted case study approach of the qualitative design and targeted Lecturers, Counselors and Students. The study used the mixed methods to solicit data. The respondents were however sampled using random and purposive sampling techniques. Data was analyzed using content thematic approach. It was revealed that, orientation programmes help students to socialize properly in the new environment. Besides, the programme helps to clear misconceptions that associate with courses of study in the College. It came out that, orientation programmes should be extended to cover a longer period and also, such programmes should be added to the Student Representative Council’s activities so as to attract mass students’ participation.

Orientation Impact on Performance of Undergraduate Students in University of Cape Coast (Ghana)

Orientation is widely conceived to encompass activities that support the transition into educational institutions. The University of Cape Coast, Ghana places a premium on orientation for fresh year students and yet the impact of such programmes on students’ performance still remain a difficult thing to determine. This study, therefore, focuses on finding out the impact of orientation on the academic performance of students. The study used the descriptive survey design and multiple sampling procedures to select 250 Level 200 students from the University. Data were collected primarily through questionnaire. Examining the Views of Students on the Orientation Program for Fresh Students in the University of Cape Coast, Ghana

The study examined the views of students on orientation programs organized for fresh students in the University of Cape Coast at the beginning of the 2019/2020 academic year. Students' involvement theory was adapted. Qualitative data was collected from purposively selected respondents and key informants in the University and analyzed using a thematic approach. The study revealed that the duration of the program was short and therefore packed which make it too stressful for the students. During the orientation exercise, some of the expectations of the students were met whilst others were not.

This study provides insight into transition experiences and adjustment of students at a university in Zimbabwe. Research was based on students in the first three semesters of college. Based on prior research college adjustment was conceptualised in this study as involving personal, emotional, social and academic issues. The study was qualitative in nature and the descriptive research design using case study method was used. Structured and unstructured questionnaires were used to gather information. A sample of 115 students was selected using stratified random sampling from the faculty of social sciences. Findings from the study revealed that to a larger extent students were failing to adjust to college demands, this was compounded by the socioeconomic conditions prevailing in Zimbabwe.

Academic Adjustment Needs of International Students of Universities in Southern Ghana

The study investigated the academic adjustment needs of regular undergraduate international students of universities in southern Ghana. The descriptive survey design of the quantitative research approach was employed for the study. The data were analysed using both descriptive (mean, standard deviation and rank) and inferential (Independent-samples t-test) statistics. The findings showed that the academic adjustment needs of international students were quite serious or weighty, and there was no significant difference in the academic adjustment needs of undergraduate regular international students on the basis of gender. The main objective of the study was to assess the adjustment problems and to determine the relationship between the overall campus adjustment and academic achievement of first year students at wolaita Sodo University. The population was 1873 first year students accepted to the university in regular programme in the year 2012/13. A multi-level assessment of the impact of orientation programs on student learning

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of orientation programs on student academic and social learning. Moving beyond previous studies, we examined how participation in orientation programming affected student learning and how the impact of these programs on learning varied by organizational characteristics (i.e., institutional control, size of undergraduate enrollment, sponsoring division, and whether the institution has an office designated for managing orientation programs), student entry characteristics (i.e., gender, race, transfer status), and student experiences (i.e., perceived quality of orientation program in helping student transition and in meeting students' expectations, positive experiences with orientation staff, and perceptions of orientation programs and their efficacy in helping students navigate resources and in providing useful campus-based information). Hierarchical linear analysis was used to analyze these crosslevel effects. Results demonstrated that having a designated office for orientation programs on campus was important for narrowing the academic learning gap between new-first year and transfer students. Implications for researchers and practitioners were discussed.
