This paper analyzed the coverage of the land of Itapetinga in the State of Bahia, Brazil, using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). The database used were images from the RapidEye satellite, provided by UESB (State University of Southwest Bahia) and topographic image SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission), made available by the USGS (United States Geological Survey). The orbital data were processed in SPRING (Georeferenced Information Processing System) with digital image processing operations, in the classification operation supervised by regions, with the Bhattacharya classifier and, Numerical Terrain Modeling (MNT) for analysis of the relief characteristics. The data were correlated through cross tabulation and calculation of areas, as support for the study. For the land cover, seven thematic classes were established according to the characteristics of the area, where the main activity is livestock, located in a region of native vegetation of the semi-deciduous seasonal forest type. In the study it was possible to observe that Itapetinga-BA is located in an altimetric range that varies from 236 to 460 meters of altitude, with predominance of the class of Smooth wavy relief (42.64%) to Wavy (40.39%), with slope varying from 3 to 20%, considering the percentage in 83% of all polygonal in the study region. The geographical position of the municipality, associated with the characteristics of the relief and the edaphoclimatic conditions, are determining factors in land use and land cover, with a predominance of grassland and with the areas of remnants of native vegetation in a seasonal semideciduous submontane forest.
