2020
During the previous decades, non-implementation of legal regulations has led to unrestrained arrangement of inadequate physical and visual obstacles that have induced great negative effect on the pedestrian mobility and visibility at the public spaces of Novi Sad (Serbia). On the other hand, visual integration and effectiveness of mobility at the visited public space can induce a positive or negative effect on the visitors' perception of that space, which represents valuable input factor for further analysis. Therefore, a space syntax methodology is used in order to comprehend complex links between morphological and spatial characteristics of built environment and pedestrian movement and visibility at the selected public spaces in Novi Sad, by applying visibility graph analysis (VGA). The study is based on analyses of how are all fragments of public space visually interconnected, and what is its relation to the pedestrian movement and usage of public space. The analysis is done both at the ground level and at the eye level, with the focus on fixed and mobile physical and visual barriers. Obstacles are grouped into different categories, with the focus on immovable public furniture and moveable furniture of private cafes and restaurants that have particularly discouraged people from moving freely around public space with greater selection of walking routes. Improved visual integration of space and unobstructed pedestrian mobility are reassessed with the aim of promoting walking without interruptions and impediments, and as a starting point for other public activities.

In the last few decades, cars and motorcycles dominate streets in various cities in the world. On the other hand, human activity on the street is the determinant of the city livability. Previous research has pointed out that if there is lots of human activity in the street, then the city will be interesting. Otherwise, if the street has no activity, then the city will be boring. Learning from that statement, now various cities in the world are developing the concept of livable streets. This study attempts to determine the physical factors of pedestrian space affecting the livability in Jalan Kemasan Yogyakarta through spatial analysis. Spatial analysis was performed by overlay technique between liveable point (activity diversity) distribution map and variable distribution map. Those physical pedestrian space research variable included element of shading, street vendors, building setback, seat location, divider between street and pedestrian way, and mixed use building function. More diverse the activity of one variable, then those variable are more affected then others. Overlay result then strengthened by field observation to qualitatively ensure the deduction. The advent of technology has reduced the need of citizens to buy, work and do even social interactions in urban space. This condition has increased the power of individuals to choose between attend or absent from the public space and consequently has highlighted the importance of public space quality. The purpose of the public life study is to focus on the daily life of urban space to identify factors affecting public life and provide a favorable urban environment for the presence of various social strata. In this regard, the 17th Shahrivar project in Tehran was selected, which, despite the planning for pedestrians, has not been able to provide the invited and desired space for citizens. The present research, with an emphasis on the ideas of Jan Gehl, uses Gehl's study tools of public life, including counting, mapping, looking for traces, keeping a diary and test walks in the area. The findings of the research show that the study area has not had a proper public life condition except in the evenings. The main factor was lack of transparent, attractive, dynamic and diverse activities in the axis. For this reason, abandoned spaces have been created with little social monitoring which cause unwanted and unplanned functions, such as becoming a vehicle park or the emergence of social unpredictable activities that is related to the background and potential context of space. By changing the social context of users toward abnormal, alien and specific people, has reduced the quality of the environment, especially in terms of psychological security, and has decreased the presence of normal people, specifically women and children.
