Implementation and Results of Comparison of LTE and Wimax based on System Level Simulation
2013
In telecommunications, 4G is the fourth generation of cell phone mobile communications standards. There are many features associated with 4G, which make it promising. On the other hand, new applications required to be supported by new mobile systems include a variety; VoIP, video conference, multimedia messaging, multi- player games, virtual private networks (VPN), etc. All these applications require higher throughput, wider BW, smaller delay and innovative transmission methods that will give higher spectral efficiency and good quality. Two leading emerging technologies are: LTE (Long Term Evolution standardized by third generation partnership project (3GPP) and WiMAX (the IEEE802.16e, the worldwide interoperability for microwave access) are considered able to fulfil the 4G requirements announced by ITU-R which is known as International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) In this project we will attempt to perform the system-level simulation of these technologies (and also simulate at the link level wherever necessary) and compare them on certain performance parameters by developing comparable 7-cell scenarios for both LTE and WiMAX. Actually, two types of simulations are possible-one on link-level and the other on system level. Merging both increases computing complexity. Therefore we go for certain abstractions and instead focus on system level simulation. Future scope of both these technologies is enormous. Also, both the technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages. In future, a network may be possible which combines the advantages of both these technologies.

The 4G technology has emerged one of the most fruitful technologies, as it provides wide variety of broadband wireless access for delivering high speed internet service to large areas. It supports large number of applications including VOIP, video conferencing, file transfer, video streaming and web browsing. IEEE 802.16E, IEEE 802.16M and LTE along with various application and QoS requirement also support Multiple-Input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques including Spatial Multiplexing (SM), Space Time Block Coding(S...
Comparative Performance Analysis of 4G LTE Network using Monte Carlo Simulation
Two main and fundamental key performance indicators which have been used to evaluate the performance of the wireless communication systems are the Bit Error Rate (BER)[6], and the data throughput or its related channel capacity bound. For a system using one antenna at the transmitter and one antenna at the receiver and in non fading AWGN channel, the evaluation of the BER for most of the known modulation schemes is well known [6]. Using more antennas at the transmitter and at the receiver and also in more realistic fading channel models, such as Rayleigh, Rician and Nakagami, the evaluation becomes more complex and necessitates the use and the development of advanced mathematical tools. In this context, the theory of BER evaluation had experienced an important evolution during the past decade. Initially, the evaluation of the BER performance was based on a classical approach where the Gaussian Q-function (also known as Gaussian Probability Integral) was used. Instead of using the alternative representation of the Gaussian Q-function, in [3], the Marcum Q-function was used to derive an approximate expression of BER analysis of Alamouti-MRC scheme with imperfect channel state information in Rician fading channel. In LTE, the BER is mainly evaluated by simulation and to the best of our knowledge, the BER analysis is rarely treated in the literature. One of our goal is to develop in this thesis some closed form expressions of the BER for the main MIMO schemes as used in LTE. To study the performance of LTE systems, a MATLAB based downlink physical layer simulator for Link Level Simulation (LLS) has been developed in [4] [5]. A System Level Simulation of the Simulator is also available [2]. The main goal of this proposed research work is to provide accurate BER analysis for different modulation schemes and their comprehensive comparison adopted in LTE networks.
Performance Comparison between LTE and WiMAX Based on Link Level Simulation
This article presents a framework for performance comparison between Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMAX technologies, depended on link level simulation, under different conditions (e.g. a mixture of channel models and modulation coding schemes (MCS)). Two performance metrics have been used: throughput against SNR for both downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) and block error rate (BLER) against SNR for both DL and UL. Simulation results, conducted in network simulator OPNET Modeler ver. 17.1, show that the throughput and the BLER increases as the MCS increase (i.e. MCS=5, 15, 24). Index Terms – LTE, WiMAX, OPNET Modeler ver. 17.1, DL-BLER, UL-BLER, MCS, DL-SNR, UL-SNR, Throughput.
Comparison Between WiMAX and LTE Based on System Level Simulation using NS2
2020
The increasing use of wireless devices and in particular smart phones has resulted the need for greater capacity and higher speed than the existing network technologies. Hence, LTE (Long Term Evolution) and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) became the two leading technologies considered for adoption to fulfill this need. The industry landscape in telecommunications is changing rapidly at the moment. Services are increasingly shifting from voice to data and from circuit-switched to packet-switched ones. Battle between LTE and WiMAX technologies is already heating up with WiMAX being ahead due to availability of standards through IEEE 802.16 and is up and running but lacks in substantial roll out plans due to cost. On the contrary, LTE upgrades from 3G networks are rumored to be as simple as slotting in a new card in the rack. LTE has gained far greater support and adoption in the industry thus leaving WiMAX future prospects limited KeywordsLTE (Long Term Evoluti...
