Burials and Human Remains. Chapter 46B: 427 - 433. (original) (raw)

2021, Mazar, A. and Panitz Cohen, N. Tel Rehov A Bronze and Iron Age City in the Beth-Shean Valley

In the first section of this chapter (46A), seven pit burials from Iron Age IIB/C were described. In four of these, the bones were too crumbled to be studied. The skeletal remains from the three other burials were studied and are presented in this chapter. In addition, this chapter includes a report on the skeletal remains of three individuals found in non-burial contexts, one in Area C from Iron Age IIA and two I from Iron Age IIB.

The Human Skeletal Remains

'En Esur ('Ein Asawir) III (IAA Reports 68), 2021

Human skeletal remains were recovered in all four burial caves (548, 561, 562, 567; see Chapter 2). The skeletal remains were examined in the field, and the bones were immediately sent for reburial. However, due to political constraints and demonstrators disturbing the excavation, some skeletal material was not examined. The excavated bones were in a very poor state of preservation, impeding our ability to reconstruct major anthropological parameters. In cases where the bones were extremely fragmentary, the anthropological study focused on sifting out, sorting and counting the teeth to determine the minimum number of individuals (MNI) in each cave and their age distribution. Age at death estimation was based upon tooth eruption, development and attrition stages, a methodology described in detail by Nagar and Winocur (2016), following criteria devised by Hillson (1986:176-201). Further study of the fragments beyond dental-age determination was usually impossible. A full description of the bones found in each cave is available in the author's detailed anthropological report in the IAA archives (2003). 1
