Survey on seasonal variation in the frequency of preterm births in the city of Rafsanjan in 2011-2012

Background and aim: Seasonal variations in incidence of diseases can be reason of effect of environmental factors on health. Since the seasonal pattern in preterm birth varies across countries and because of importance of preterm births and unknown causes of it, this study was designed to investigate the frequency of preterm births in different seasons. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used data of all 5,860 infants born in the Rafsanjan Nik-Nafs hospital in 2011-2012. Inclusion criteria included live birth more than 20 weeks gestational age and birth weight more than 500 grams. Gestational age was determined according to mother's last menstrual period date. The criterion for preterm birth was gestational age less than 37 weeks gestation. Data was collected through delivery records of hospital medical documentary unit. Survey of Birth Weight in Newborns among Mothers with and Without a Common Underlying Disease in Rafsanjan Niknafs Maternity in 2011-2012

Background and Objectives: Birth weight is the most important indicator of infant's health and this critical index is directly related to mother's health. Hence, knowledge of maternal diseases can be considered as an effective factor in maintaining infant ideal weight. Therefore, this study was addressed to investigate the association between maternal diseases and birth weight. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on Rafsanjan-Niknafs maternity in 2011-2012. The inclusion criteria were being Iranian, live births, gestational age of 22 weeks and above and birth weight of >500 g. Data were collected by questionnaires and analyzed by statistical tests including independent t-test, chisquare test, Fisher's exact test, one-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression. Results: In given sample, 4193 (83.6%) mothers were healthy and 825 (16.4%) mothers had underlying diseases. The average and standard deviation of age in healthy and diseased mothers were 27.37 ± 5.14 and 29.99 ± 5.59 years old, respectively (p<0.001). There was found a significant difference between mother's diseases and birth weight, as infant weight gain of healthy mothers was 89 (2.2%), of diabetics 25 (5.8%), of the hypertensive 10 (4.4%), and of mothers who had more than one disease 4 (5.8%) (p<0.001). Also, low birth weight (LBW) in healthy mothers, in mothers with diabetes, hypertension, and in mothers with more than one disease was 6.3%, 4.9%, 17.8%, and 7.2%, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of weight disorders in Rafsanjan and the impact of mother's diseases on this important health index, it is necessary to identify and provide special control care for mothers during pregnancy.

A Comparative Study on Prevalence of Preterm Birth and Low Birth Weight in Iranians and Afghans Races in Rafsanjan Nik-Nafs Hospital in 2011-2012

Background and Objective: Preterm birth and low birth weight are considered as causes of morbidity and mortality, developmental disorders and child abnormalities. Since health outcomes differ on ethno-racial groups and there is little information among hand with regards to the said matter in Iran, this study was designed to survey the preterm and low birth weight prevalence on Iranian and Afghan nationalities. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 5925 Iranian and Afghan live births which delivered in Rafsanjan Nik-Nafs hospital on 2011-2012. Data was collected via use of delivery records of hospital medical documentary unit. The criterion for preterm birth was gestational age less than 37 weeks, and for low birth weight was birth weight less than 2500 grams. For data analysis, independent two-sample t-test, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used. Results: overal, 5532 infants (93.4%) were Iranian and 393 infant (6.6%) were Afghan. Preterm birth prevalence was 7.5% (447 cases), so that 7.1% (391 cases) and 14.5% (56 cases) were Iranian and Afghan respectively (p<0.001). In the present study, low birth weight prevalence was 7% (416 cases) out of which 6.7% (367 cases) were Iranian and 12.7% (49 cases) were Afghan (p<0.001). Conclusion: Since high prevalence of preterm birth and low birth weight were seen among the Afghan refugees, it appears that race and different factors such as: lack of proper insurance, availablity of health services and a lower socioeconomic status are in linked with this increase.

The lifestyle of married women referring to health centers in West of Ahvaz

Indicators of healthy reproduction program in Isfahan province in 2012

Background & aim: Healthy reproduction program help individuals maintain their health and improve family and community health by enabling them to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the healthy reproduction program in Isfahan province. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study. 9600 married women aged 15-49 years enrolled study according to multi stage clustered stratified random sampling. Data collection was done via developed standard questionnaire by experts of ministry of health and medical education. Samples were been questioned by 177 trained health providers in their home. Data analysis was performed by SPSS 16 software using descriptive statistic. Results: Total coverage of contraceptive method use (modern and traditional) was 89.5% and modern contraceptive method coverage was 67.8%. The most and the least common used methods of contraception were condom (22%) and a-month contraceptive injection (0.6%).The most common cause of non-use contraceptive method was suspicious to pregnancy and pregnancy. The percentage of changing method over a year ago was 23.Unintended pregnancy and unmet need were 18% and 6.5%, respectively. Correct consumption of oral contraceptive pills and awareness of emergency contraception method were 57% and 52%, respectively.73.5% of women aged 15-49 years used governmental health care services and satisfaction rate was more than 90%. To decrease unwanted pregnancy and increase women's knowledge about correct use of oral contraceptive and emergency contraceptive method, health care provider should pay special attention to contraceptive counseling to clients.

Association of anthropometric indices in Iranian and Afghan infants with maternal indices in the Eqbaliyeh health center, Qazvin

Abstract Anthropometric indices are of the best indicators for growth monitoring during neonatal period. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the association ofanthropometric indices in Iranian and Afghan infants with maternal indices. The study was conducted in 230 mothers who had health profiles in the Eqbaliyeh health center, Qazvin during 2013. Data were collected through the records in mothers’ health profiles. Data were analyzed using T-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Of 230 infants, 119 (51.7%) were male. Mean weight and head circumference were significantly different between Iranian and Afghan infants.The Iranian mothers were older and had higher weight and height during pregnancy compared to the Afghan mothers and the difference was statistically significant. Adolescent Mothers Experiences of Pregnancy and Early Motherhood: A Qualitative Content Analysis

Background & Aim: Adolescent pregnancy is a complex issue, and it is considered as a social-health problem. Present study aimed to examine the experiences of teenage mothers of their pregnancy and motherhood in Tabriz city. Materials & Methods: In this qualitative phenomenological study, purposive sampling was used to select participants among women referred to Tabriz health centers, and it continued up to data saturation. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 adolescent mothers in the age of 15-19 years and were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: 6 categories including need to family support, need to education, physical complications, religious beliefs, feeling of capability and maturation and negative feelings due to early pregnancy and parenting were merged. Comprehensive support and achieving to self-esteem were the main themes that were identified in this study. Conclusion : Becoming a mother during the adolescence is a difficult struggle because of inexperience, unprepared for motherhood and relying on others for support. Based on the findings of this study, adolescent mothers need to get a comprehensive support. In addition doing motherhood responsibility properly can help achieving mothers' self-esteem. Support of spouse, family members, and also health care providers to this vulnerable group can have a positive impact on physical and emotional condition of adolescent mothers and their infants.

Specification of the educational needs of parents with premature infants admitted to neonatal intensive care unit

Background and Aim: Birth of a premature infant can instigate emotional crisis for the parents and encounter them with a variety of needs. The aim of this study was to specify the educational needs of parents of premature infants admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Materials and Methods: The study was performed by qualitative research approach. Twelve participants including 9 parents of infants in NICU, 2 nurses and 1 pediatrist were selected by purposive sampling method. Data were gathered by semi-structured interview in akbarabadi, aliasghar, firoozgar hospitals. Data were analyzed content analysis approach. Results: Two themes emerged from data analysis which expressed educational needs of parents of premature infants admitted in NICU. These themes were: need for knowledge and information about prematurity, and need for acquiring skills for caring premature infants. Conclusion: Most parents have not sufficient knowledge and information about premature infants and resolving these needs can help them to achieve a better sense of control over the situation. Understanding of these needs can help care team to provide better services for parents premature infants.

The study aims to build a standardized Premarital scale to identify the personality, social, economic, and physical characteristics of the future couples, with the aim of providing a premarital counseling service in a manner that is appropriate for them and find out the psychometric properties of it. The study followed the descriptive analytical method. The scale was applied to a sample of (100) hundred individuals (45 males and 55 females) who were randomly selected. The sample age ranged from 15 to 50 years. The results of the study found that the "premarital scale" that was built has good psychometric properties in terms of validity and consistency necessary to apply it to those who are going to marry in Medina, in order to provide a "premarital counseling" service for them that is appropriate to their personality traits, social, economic, and physical characteristics.
