Objective: To design and develop a special tool to assess the empowerment of NGO women in Iran. Methods: This successive exploratory study of combinational type was conducted in 2015 in two steps. In the first step, using comments of participants and the help of authentic texts related to this field, dimensions of psychological empowerment were developed. In the second step, psychometric properties of the scale or tool were determined using formal content, and structural validity and reliability were determined using internal consistency and stability via SPSS version 21. Results: In the first step, the initial tool including 58 items was developed in the form of eight domains. In the second step, based on exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the number of items was reduced to 37. Considering the eigenvalues of higher than one, items were classified into eight factors. KMO index was 0.896 in this study. Reliability of the tool was 0.81 using Cronbach's alpha. This tool is able to predict 66.1% of total changes in psychological empowerment. Conclusion: A questionnaire with relevant reliability and validity, including eight domains of participation, motivation, cognitive thinking, critical thinking, self-efficacy, intention, perceived control and social support was developed to measure psychological empowerment of NGO women in Iran.

Health Promotion Awareness Through Empowerment

This action research project aims to apply the basics of the empowerment concept to health promotion teaching and learning activities, as part of the health promotion subject in Nakhon Prathom Ratjabhat University's program in Bachelor of Nursing Science. The teaching and learning activities aimed to enhance health promotion consciousness of the students. The fifty seven students, divided into groups of twenty eight and twenty nine, were assigned a task. In the first week each student was required to evaluate their own experiences about health promotion by naming their experiences and analysing their health condition. Then, each student identified the area within which they could make some behavioural improvement and planned an activity to bring about change in their behaviour, making a pledge of a reward if they accomplished it, and a pledge of punishment if they failed the task. During the third to the eighth week, the students were asked to practice health promoting behaviours according to their plan and were encouraged to report their ideas and reflections to the instructor in charge of each group. The findings show that all of the participants gained more knowledge and practiced more health promoting behaviours. All of the students were able to take control of their activities and demonstrate critical awareness through reflection. The students' level of satisfaction with this teaching method was very good.

A Systematic Review of Questionnaires Measuring Health-Related Empowerment

Research and Theory for Nursing Practice, 2009

The objective of this systematic review was to identify questionnaires that measure health-related empowerment in adults or families and demonstrated the best evidence of reliability and validity. A search of nine data bases identified 8,269 abstracts that referred to empowerment. Full article review was completed for abstracts that met the inclusion criteria or that could not be excluded with certainty ( n = 124). Fifty distinct, modified, or translated questionnaires measuring empowerment were identified in 74 articles. Each was rated in terms of reliability and validity. One questionnaire had good evidence of reliability and validity, four had moderate evidence, and 45 had limited or no evidence. Limited or no evidence for reliability and validity for many questionnaires could relate in part to lack of consensus on the theoretical definition of, and indicators for measuring empowerment. We recommend that researchers use the questionnaire rated as having good evidence and that data on reliability and validity continue to be reported for other questionnaires.

Which empowerment, which Health Promotion? Conceptual convergences and divergences in preventive health practices

Based on the multiple meanings, “empowerment” can be identified with either conservative or criti- cal Health Promotion approaches. From a conser- vative approach, the concept is viewed as an es- sentially individual phenomenon, centered on the provision of information and the external transfer of power in the name of the collective good. From this approach, the relationship between “psycho- logical” and “community” empowerment is not considered. From a critical approach, the con- cept is viewed as a relational phenomenon that manifests itself in the dialectic conflict of interests between individuals, groups, and social classes. From this approach, “psychological” and “commu- nity” empowerment are seen as micro and macro levels of analysis, and social transformations are the result of simultaneous changes at these levels. The use of the notion of empowerment without critical reflection or political analysis of power relations in society disseminates vague, romantic, and homogeneous views of “community”. There- fore, to assume the relational nature of empow- erment means to accept its interdependence with the notion of participation, without which there can be no social transformation. Thus, one should be vigilant about multiple meanings that empow- erment can given in Health Promotion discourse.
