Evaluation of the Removal of 2،4 Dichlorophenol by Chitosan from Aqueous Solutions (original) (raw)
Journal of Environmental Health Engineering
Background: 2،4 dichlorophenol (DCP), one of the most chlorophenol compounds family with highly toxic effect, exists in agricultural areas, chlorinated waters, discharging wastewater of pulp industries and paper factories. Chlorophenols can cause damages to the kidneys, liver, pancreas and weaken the central nervous system (CNS). In the current study we would evaluate the adsorption of DCP by chitosan in aqueous environments. Materials and Methods: In this study we evaluated the effect of operational parameters such as time (15-90min), pH values (3-9), initial concentration of DCP(15-100mg/l)and the dose of chitosan (0.1-0.9g) in a batch reactor. A spectrophotometer at wavelength of 280nm was used to measure the concentration of DCP. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models and Pseudo-first order kinetic models and Pseudo-second-order kinetic was drawn by using of the results obtained in the absorption process. Results: Equilibrium time in the adsorbtion process was estimated to be 75 minutes (DCP Concentration-15mg/l, Chitosan Concentration-0.5g and pH-6.5) with 76% removal efficiency. PH=3 was calculated as the optimal PH in absorption process (DCP Concentration-15mg/l, Chitosan Concentration-0.5g and Time Equilibrium-75 min) with efficiency 79% and the value of efficiency decreased by increasing PH. In 15 mg/l concentration of DCP maximum adsorption with an efficiency of 79% was observed. (Chitosan Concentration-0.5g, Time Equilibrium-75 min and pH-3) and the maximum 87% adsorption efficiency of DCP was observed at the 0.08mg/l absorbent dose of chitosan. (DCP Concentration-15mg/l, time equilibrium-75 min and pH=3). Adsorption process follows of Freundlich isotherm with correlation coefficient of 0.9599 and the pseudo second order kinetic model with correlation coefficient of 0.9649. Conclusion: According to results of the study, chitosan can be used to remove of DCP from industrial wastewater due to of its perfect characteristics such as biodegradability, resurgent ability, low cost and adsorption acceptable efficiency.

Background & Objectives: Entering LAS through the wastewater plant's effluent to water resources causes taste and odor changes, aquatics death, oxygen transfer limitation, and disorders in water treatment processes. Therefore, the study objective was to determine optimum conditions for fenton oxidation process to remove linear alkyl benzene sulfonate from aqueous environments using taguchi method and its requirement evaluation for additional treatment of Biolac effluent. Materials &Methods: LAS removal using Fenton oxidation was evaluated in a 500 mL laboratoryscale batch reactor. In order to save the costs, to determine the optimum conditions of the Fenton oxidation, 25 runs were computed using Taghuchi method by Minitab 16 software. Sampling and required tests were performed based on standard methods examination for water and wastewater. For evaluation of Biolac process sufficiency in LAS removal, biolac efficiency in Urmia Wastewater Treatment Plant was studied in 2012. Results: Based on the LAS removal and chemicals required, Minitab software)Ver. 16(recommended the optimum conditions of Fenton oxidation at 900 mg/L H 2 O 2 , 170 mg/L Ferrous ion, pH of 4, and reaction time of 20 minutes. It was found that the Fenton oxidation for LAS removal had 86.5% efficiency under optimum condithions and it was second order reaction with the rate coefficient of 0.0152 L/mg.min. Biolac process does not need any additional treatment due to meeting LAS standard in municipal wastewater treatment. Thus, this process decreased annually mean LAS from 5.28 mg/L to 0.734 mg/L in municipal wastewater. Conclusion: Although the Fenton oxidation appears as a chemical process with high efficiency in the removal of LAS, the low efficiency of COD corresponding to the LAS indicated partial decomposition of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate by Fenton oxidation.
Evaluation of Antibacterial Properties of Electrospun Polyurethane-chitosan Nanofiber Media
Journal of Occupational Hygiene Engineering
Background and Objective: The accumulation of airborne bioaerosols on filtration media and their gradual proliferation in the presence of appropriate moisture and environmental conditions is one of the major problems against using these media. The use of hybrid media containing antibacterial agents is one of the available solutions to this problem. The present study aimed to fabricate nonwoven nanofiber media with an antibacterial activity using an electrospinning process. Materials and Methods: Polyurethane-chitosan nanofiber media the weight ratios of 100 to 0, 90 to 10, 80 to 20, and 70 to 30 were fabricated by simultaneous electrospinning process. The evaluation of the antibacterial properties of the media was performed after their preparation by standard methods of disk diffusion (ISO 20645) and colony counting (ISO 20743). Results: The investigation of antibacterial activity of samples by both methods showed that the media with polyurethane to chitosan weight ratio of 70 to 30 had suitable antibacterial activity. The mean values of bacterial growth inhibition zone and antibacterial activity for polyurethane-chitosan (70/30) media were obtained at 0.26 and 2.225 mm, respectively, indicating the significant antibacterial activity of this media. Conclusion: The results showed that antibacterial nanofiber media can be created by adding chitosan nanofibers as antimicrobial agents to the polyurethane nanofiber.

Organophosphorus compounds are widely used in pesticides, insecticides in agriculture and as nervous chemical agents. These chemicals inhibit the acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity that is responsible for the nervous impulse in organisms. This effect leads to an increase in acetylcholine level and finally neuronal complications. Many methods are used to degrade and decontaminate these compounds, such as: the use of chemicals, burial of toxins, burning and biodegradation. The chemical and physical methods are often toxic, allergic, corrosive and nonspecific and harmful for the environment and are not usable in war spaces. Biodegradation is an effective and safe method that is performed under controlled conditions for the decomposition of various constituents, including organophosphorus compounds, by biological agents. Biodegradation is performed using microbes to detoxify and decompose contaminants. These strains contain broad substrate-degrading enzymes. Although the use of natural strains as vital catalysts is an interesting method for the treatment of organophosphorus compounds, the inability of organophosphorus compounds to cross the membrane width reduces the total catalytic power, so the use of recombinant enzymes for the decomposition of organophosphorus compounds can be of great help in removing contaminants, especially in war environments. Many enzymes have been identified and used for this purpose, but most notably include: Diisopropyl-fluorophosphatase (DFPasae), Organophosphorus acid anhydrolase (OPAA) and Organophosphorus Hydrolase (OPH). In this review, in addition to describing the organophosphorus compounds and their effects, biodegradation especially by use of enzymes was considered. The understanding and mastering of this knowledge could help researchers in the use of chemical degrading enzymes, especially organophosphates, in spray and enzymatic ointments in military environments.

BACKGROUND: Poultry meat belongs to perishable foods and the major concern of food industries is the microbial spoilage of poultry meat. OBJECTIVES: The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of chitosan (CH) coating enriched with different concentrations of Ziziphora clinopodioides essential oil (ZEO) in comparison with control group on some of the sensory and microbial properties of chicken breast fillets during storage at refrigerated temperature for 12 days. METHODS: Essential oil extraction was done by hydro-distillation method and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the present study, chicken breast fillets separately were dipped in 2% CH solution containing ZEO at concentrations 0, 0.5 and 1% and then stored at refrigerated condition for 12 days. After that chicken fillets were studied at 7 intervals (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 days) regarding microbial (Total mesophilic and Psychrotrophic bacteria, Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacteriaceae) and sensory (color, odor and taste) examination. RESULTS: The most important compounds of the ZEO were geraniol (20.62%), carvacrol (18.17%), thymol (5.39%), α-terpineol (7.49%) and 4-terpineol (6.83%). Results of this study revealed that in the treatments coated with CH containing ZEO, total viable counts (TVC), Pseudomonas spp., lactic acid bacteria, Psychrotrophic bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae family significantly (P<0.05) decreased as compared to control group during the storage period. Based on the results of the present study, coating of chicken fillets with chitosan alone or chitosan containing 0.5 % concentration of ZEO showed better sensory properties. CONCLUSIONS: CH coating enriched with 0.5 % ZEO has potential to extend shelf life of chicken fillets without any unfavorable organoleptic properties.

Copolymerization of aniline and 2-anilinoethanol was carried out by electrochemical and chemical polymerization. Homo and copolymer thin films were synthesized electrochemically, under cyclic voltammetric conditions in aqueous solutions of sulfuric acid as electrolyte at room temperature. The films were deposited on the surface of working electrode [Glassy Carbon ()GC)(] versus Ag/AgCl electrode in solution containing 0.1 M mixture of monomers and 1M H2SO4 as electrolyte by applying sequential linear potential scan rate of 25 mV/s between -0.1 to 0.9 V. The cyclic voltammograms CVs)( of obtained copolymer illustrate the formation of copolymer. The homo- and copolymers of aniline ()ANI)( and 2-anilinoethanol 2-ANE)( with different feed ratios of monomers were prepared in 1M H2SO4 in presence of ammonium persulfate [()NH4)(2S2O8] as an oxidant. FTIR spectroscopy and conductivity measurement using four-probe technique were applied for the characterization of the products. The solubilit...
