TEACHING STATISTICS IN SOCIOLOGY A CURRICULAR ANALYSIS (Atena Editora)

TEACHING STATISTICS IN SOCIOLOGY A CURRICULAR ANALYSIS (Atena Editora), 2024

How to Overcome the Gap Between the Available Statistical Methods and Their Effective Use by Researchers in Social Sciences. A Few Thoughts About the Experience in the Presta Programme

2003

PRESTA is a training programme in applied statistics for teachers and researchers in South American universities, sponsored by the European Union, which started in 1994. It was intended to make a convergent presentation of "exploratory data analysis" (in the Anglo-Saxon tradition) and " data analysis" (in the French tradition) to a "critical mass" of users. The seminars organised in its first quinquennium were attended by 2,500 researchers and teachers from about 300 universities. Working in the field, we soon realised the importance of the distance between the currently available statistical methods and their effective and potential uses. Therefore, the research programme is focused on the pedagogical contents and the institutional components of this "gap". In this paper, we summarise our experience with regard to the main factors that led to this situation and the strategies developed to solve it.

Role of Statistics in Social Science Research-A study

JASC: Journal of Applied Science and Computations, 2018

Research is an important prerequisite for a dynamic social order. Society has marched on to its present form with the help of constant research and investigation. Statistics is growing in importance every day and is now being used in almost every field of study and activity. Even most of the subjects under "humanities" are now linked with statistics. As compared to mathematics. Statistics is a new branch of human knowledge However, from the point of view of perfection, the science of statistics is not very far from mathematics. Day to day the application of mathematics and statistics are increasing at a higher level. Social science research is a systematic method of exploring, analysing and conceptualizing human life in order to extend, correct or verify knowledge of human behaviour and social life. The aim of Social science research to understand the human behaviour and its interaction with the environment and the social institutions. The main objective of the study is to analyse the importance of Statistics use in Social science research. Scientific investigation presents itself in a more formidable fashion in the faculty of social sciences where quantitative techniques are a rather recent introduction. With increased emphasis on the use of quantitative methods in social sciences, it is often noted that researchers become victims of frustration and dejection due to their lack of knowledge of elementary mathematics and statistical methods. Simple concepts such as average behaviour, measure of variability, degree of interdependence, extent of explanatory capability of a simple model, etc. present major hurdles to researchers, otherwise quite intelligent but devoid of the knowledge of quantitative techniques. The main objective of this study to analyse the importance of statistics in social science research. The methodology used in this study is secondary data like books, reports, previous research papers and Government surveys. The major finding of the study observed as the statistical tools and techniques are using more the ninety percent of social scientists are using in their research works.

Research trend on the use of historical approaches for the teaching of Statistics in Brazil Published with open access at www.questjournals.org

The objective of this work was to systematically analyze the literature in Brazil, IRaMuTeQ software was used for multidimensional analysis from the organization in texts (corpus), each one being defined as a "text segment". Each text was prepared considering what was emphasized in the research, the methodology or methodological approach used, the context in which it was developed and the types of study and areas involved and the main results and conclusions. In addition, data analysis was organized, based on the identification for each text, of the following variables of interest: Type of publication (pubType); Year of publication of the text (yearPub); Teaching Cycle to which the work was destined (cycleTeaching); Public to which the work is intended (publicTeaching); Work focus (workFocus); and Brazilian region where the work was developed (PubRegion). In the maximum tree generated in IRaMuTeQ about the set of abstracts, it is evident that there is a concern in research with the student's profile and its relationship with experiential knowledge, with daily life, with its relationship with the world of work and, contributing to the formation of citizens aware of the development of statistical science. However, the study indicates that research on the use of historical approaches in the teaching of statistics is still incipient, highlighting the need for further research in the Brazilian context.

ICOTS-7, 2006: Araújo 1 STATISTICAL ILLITERACY IN LATIN AMERICA: A CONSEQUENCE OF THE DIFFERENT VISIONS ABOUT THE MEANING OF STATISTICS

The lack of interest of statisticians to reach a consensual characterisation of Statistics is the main reason for the inefficacy in the efforts made until now to install or to improve statistical education in Latin American countries. It is therefore necessary to attain consensus within the international statistical community to produce a characterisation of Statistics that makes possible the establishment of a general common frame within which all the activities related to statistical development should be incorporated. Under this characterisation, some actions are suggested to encourage national and international Statistics associations to support the improvement of the teaching of Statistics and so set some sustainable bases for the establishment of a suitable statistical literacy.

The use of statistics in social sciences

Journal of Humanities and Applied Social Sciences

Purpose The purpose this paper is to review some of the statistical methods used in the field of social sciences. Design/methodology/approach A review of some of the statistical methodologies used in areas like survey methodology, official statistics, sociology, psychology, political science, criminology, public policy, marketing research, demography, education and economics. Findings Several areas are presented such as parametric modeling, nonparametric modeling and multivariate methods. Focus is also given to time series modeling, analysis of categorical data and sampling issues and other useful techniques for the analysis of data in the social sciences. Indicative references are given for all the above methods along with some insights for the application of these techniques. Originality/value This paper reviews some statistical methods that are used in social sciences and the authors draw the attention of researchers on less popular methods. The purpose is not to give technical d...

Opportunities, Challenges and Statistical Cooperation in the Implementation of a Statistical Literacy Project in Mendoza, Argentina

2010

Nowadays, in many countries, national statistical offices are developing projects to introduce citizens to data analysis methods which are useful to describe the real socio-economic situation in each country. The International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP) has supported this kind of work around the world. Under the ISLP framework, the Government of Mendoza (Argentina) specialists have begun to develop a project called Statistics Literacy in Mendoza (AEM) which includes a Web Page with statistical tools to train citizens. This Web Page takes into account not only the needs of general potential users (like glossary, links to other related pages, stories) but also the needs of school curricula. In this paper we describe the motivation for the project , some consequences and difficulties found, the interaction with other institutions, its implementation, and new lines to develop in the future.

Statistical education in Social Sciences

According to Méndez Ramírez(1) “Statistics becomes an aid to the process of scientific research; however, in order to be effective differences between what is statistics and the science on which it is applied must be cleared. That is to say, the approaches of assumptions, ...
