The kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give (Mt 10,10). On his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, a light from the sky suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" He said, "Who are you, sir?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go into the city and you will be told what to do" (Acts, 9,3-6). Built in the 10 th century and massively restored in the second half of the 15 th century, the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila helped the Bulgarian culture (and language) to survive the half millennium of Muslim oppression.
