Improving Patient Safety, Health Data Accuracy, and Remote Self-Management of Health Through the Establishment of a Biometric-Based Global UHID

Studies in health technology and informatics, 2016

Healthcare systems globally continue to face challenges surrounding patient identification. Consequences of misidentification include incomplete and inaccurate electronic patient health records potentially jeopardizing patients' safety, a significant amount of cases of medical fraud because of inadequate identification mechanisms, and difficulties affiliated with the value of remote health self-management application data being aggregated accurately into the user's Electronic Health Record (EHR). We introduce a new technique of user identification in healthcare capable of establishing a global identifier. Our research has developed algorithms capable of establishing a Unique Health Identifier (UHID) based on the user's fingerprint biometric, with the utilization of facial-recognition as a secondary validation step before health records can be accessed. Biometric captures are completed using standard smartphones and Web cameras in a touchless method. We present a series o...

Patient identification within a healthcare system: the role of radio frequency identification and bar code technologies

Healthcare enterprises require the ability to respond to rapidly changing circumstances. The increasing attention to patient safety and access to efficient health care services has bought about the adoption of new identification and sensor networks technologies. These technologies are being coupled to information systems to help clarify the complex nature of hospital environments. To reduce medical errors it is crucial to identify the correct procedure or medication to the matching recipient. Adverse drug events and medical errors are costly, not only to the hospital but also to the patient. It is important that the correct treatment is provided, in a timely manner to a health care patient, and this includes the ability to access and record pertinent information. The role of identification systems such as bar code or radio frequency identification technologies, is to enhance the positive identification of a patient in a healthcare environment. This paper proposes the integration of ...
