Interior Environment Design Method for Positive Mental Health in Lockdown Times: Color, Textures, Objects, Furniture and Equipment (original) (raw)
2022, Designs
In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of a COVID-19 pandemic accompanied by a series of mass lockdowns. Some of the consequences of these lockdowns were (1) psychological problems, (2) development of simultaneous activities in spaces not prepared for it, and (3) indoor spaces that generate negative emotions in people. To improve people's mental health during times of lockdown, this research proposes a methodology to design positive interior environments through color, texture, objects, furniture, and equipment. For this, 147 qualitative surveys were carried out, the structure of which is based on research methods and tools inherited from marketing discipline (Likert Scale and Customer Satisfaction Score). Several operative graphs were created to make decisions on the design of interior environments. To avoid some of the problems caused by indoor environments during lockdowns it is recommended that users return to paying attention to the design of the interior spaces of their homes. Note that there is no standard solution to this problem, but a method to design interior environments based on people's positive mental health such as the one presented here can help. The trends found in this work open a field of exploration towards the improvement of interior spaces through neutral colors, natural materials (cotton and wood) and objects with which emotional relationships are created, either with the objects (collections) or because they allow you to connect with other people (technology). It is considered necessary to continue with the research by expanding the sample to incorporate into the analysis the most vulnerable sectors of population during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Evaluation of Design Approaches for Wellbeing in Interiors
Journal of Engineering and Architecture, 2019
Interior spaces have a great effect on human wellbeing because of their role as the follower of life. This work aims to evaluate a series of design approaches that can be used in order to create interior design proposals that can promote human wellbeing. This paper initially discusses the importance of wellbeing in spatial design by proposing a framework of design criteria, which can be used to systemize the design input concerning the multi-dimensional structure of wellbeing in living environments. Afterwards, the decision of the appropriate design approach that can guide the designer towards meaningful solutions was discussed through the evaluation of four different design approaches that can be used during the design process. The efficacy of these approaches was measured according to the basic design criteria defined in the wellbeing framework for interiors. After the theoretical assumptions, further research will focus on the practical evaluation of living environments realized using these different approaches in order to understand their capacity to support wellbeing in everyday spatial experiences.
The Impacts of Sustainable Residential Interior Space on Inhabitant’s Emotions
Environment-Behaviour Proceedings Journal, 2016
Focusing on inhabitant’s climate comfort causes the neglect of personal and aesthetic factors that have effects on emotions and psychological comfort. Blindly adhering to sustainable design principles regardless of the basic architectural design parameters cause similar interior spaces in today’s housing of Iran. Interior space form is one the main design factors that has some effects on inhabitant’s emotions. It is a correlation research to study inhabitant’s emotions towards sustainable interior space by focusing on interior form. It illustrates that form can consider as an influential factor in creating and improving sustainable conditions according to inhabitant’s emotions.© 2016. The Authors. Disseration Wellness in Interior Design
Can you Promote Wellness Through Interior Design, 2021
Can general wellness and wellbeing be promoted through interior design? This study will examine three wellness-based design elements, theories and practises including: Biophilic Design – the inclusion of nature Sustainable Design – use of sustainable materials and practices Human-Centred Design – technology aided design and user-friendly interfaces By analysing each of these theories and principles, both individually and collectively, underpinning their ideology, this study will then dissect whether the overall wellness of individuals can be promoted through enhancing residential and commercial built spaces. What is known to promote wellness in the interior design and scientific evidence will be examined to confirm it. To support the investigation into wellness-based interiors, an extensive literature review was undertaken on the elements of wellness and wellness-design theories and practises. Participation-based surveys and experiments were also conducted, focusing on trying to understand the physiological and psychological reactions to certain stresses and situations. Wellness based approaches are critically discussed to determine if one approach is more effective or if the convergence of the three main paradigms’ deliver a more cohesive approach to wellness-based design is explored and evaluated to define an optimal interior approach in practise.
Well-being Design and Frameworks for Interior Space
Well-being Design and Frameworks for Interior Space Index and Preface, 2020
The contribution of this book to interior architecture includes all basic components of the discipline’s body of knowledge, which are research, practice and education. Regarding research, the most important contribution of the study is the proposal of a framework that can help to understand the nature of well-being in interiors with different purposes and also in different contexts. The framework is based on requirements, which are essential for well-being in interior space. In different chapters of the book the framework is already applied to groups of people from different age groups in different contexts and the results have been discussed in terms of well-being requirements. In the chapters based on survey studies the focus of the framework is on the human factor. On the other hand, the framework has also been applied to existing living environments to evaluate their capacity to promote well-being. In this case the focus is directly on practical examples with different qualities. These studies help to understand the influence of interior space in creating well-being for its inhabitants. Regarding practice, the framework can be a road map for designers in order to develop a comprehensive design approach for future interventions. In Chapter 4 the existing design approaches that have significant value in practice have also been discussed and their specific methodologies have been analysed. Lastly, the book offers a comprehensive understanding of well-being for education programs of interior architecture as well as architecture. For design and architecture students, it is necessary to understand the factors that have impact on people’s well-being. These factors discussed all through the book include the history of the concept of living well, the evolution of well-being with age, the requirements that affect well-being, the potentials of certain design approaches for well-being, the existing environments (such as vernacular structures, heritage buildings) with specific advantages for well-being, changes in well-being requirements, interior environments with different functions (such as schools and home environments) and the intersections of interior design with other disciplines involved in the general research of well-being.
