The paper will consist of three parts. In part I we shall present some background considerations which are necessary as a basis for what follows. We shall try to clarify some basic concepts and notions, and we shall collect the most important arguments (and related goals) in favour of problem solving, modelling and applications to other subjects in mathematics instruction. In the main part H we shall review the present state, recent trends, and prospective lines of development, both in empirical or theoretical research and in the practice of mathematics instruction and mathematics education, concerning (applied) problem solving, modelling, applications and relations to other subjects. In particular, we shall identify and discuss four major trends: a widened spectrum of arguments, an increased globality, an increased unification, and an extended use of computers. In the final part III we shall comment upon some important issues and problems related to our topic.

Mathematical Problem Solving: Papers from a Research Workshop
Five papers from the Workshop on Mathematical Problem Solving sponsored by the Georgia Center for the Study of Learning and Teaching Mathematics are included along with an overview of the interests and history of the Center and its organization of the problem-solving workshop. One paper contains an overview of mathematical problem solving. The other papers deal with research methodology, problem solving heuristics, Soviet studies of problem solving, and mathematical problem solving in the elementary schools. (MN)
Development of a Module for Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving at Primary Level

In this paper, the researchers describe their conceptualization of module for teaching mathematical problem solving at the upper primary level on topics Measurement and Geometry. The conceptualization is based on the mathematics practical paradigm that has been used for teaching problem solving at the secondary level. One highlight of the teaching module that was developed is a set of scaffolding guide for enacting the primary mathematics problem solving lesson together with the use of the problem solving “practical worksheet” that was designed. The researchers explicate the pedagogical principles in designing the scaffolding questions in the practical worksheet. The modified practical worksheet provides teachers with a scaffold for enacting problem solving lesson. A set of four problems was chosen, the genre of which is quite uncommon for high-stake national examinations but are mathematically rich problems to be used in the upper primary mathematics curriculum. Suggestions are made on how the package can be used through the lesson plans that were developed for the lessons.

In contrast to routine problems, non-routine ones cannot be solved through the direct application of a standard procedure. Consider the following problem: In a quiz you get two points for each correct answer. If a question is not answered or the answer is wrong, one point is subtracted from your score. The quiz contains 10 questions. Tina received 8 points in total. How many questions did Tina answer correctly? The complexity of this problem lies neither in the size of the numbers nor in the execution of the appropriate calculations. What makes this problem perplexing for primary school students is that it requires keeping track of several interrelated values.
