Student Mining Using K-Means Clustering: A Basis for Improving Higher Education Marketing Strategies
Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal , 2023
This study aims to enhance marketing strategies in higher education institutions by applying data mining techniques, specifically K-means clustering. The research focuses on Mindanao State University-Lanao del Norte Agricultural College (MSU-LNAC), a tertiary institution in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, with the objective of increasing enrollment. The study utilizes the K-means algorithm to group attributes into different clusters. The clustering analysis provides valuable insights into the characteristics and preferences of the surveyed student population. Based on the findings, recommendations are presented to guide targeted marketing efforts, such as geographic targeting, collaborations with senior high schools, financial assistance programs, and the development of marketing campaigns that emphasize the institution's strengths and advantages. By implementing these recommendations, MSU-LNAC can enhance its recruitment and marketing strategies to attract and retain students effectively.
New Student Clusterization Based on New Student Admission Using Data Mining Method
Jurnal Pilar Nusa Mandiri
The process of admitting new students to the Faculty of Information Technology (FTI) at Universitas Budi Luhur produces a large amount of student data in the form of student profile data and other data. This happens causing a buildup of new student data, thus affecting the search for information on that data. This study aims to classify regular undergraduate admissions data at the Faculty of Information Technology (FTI) Universitas Budi Luhur by utilizing the data mining process using the clustering technique. The algorithm used for clustering is the K-Means algorithm. K-Means is a non-hierarchical clustering data method that can group student data into several clusters based on the similarity of the data, so that student data with the same characteristics is grouped in one cluster and those with different characteristics are grouped in another cluster. An implementation using RapidMiner is used to help find accurate values. This research produced a description of what clusters were...
Higher Education Institution (HEI) Enrollment Forecasting Using Data Mining Technique
Prediction plays a vital role used for strategic and tactical decision-making undertaking sthat pave the way for efficient and effective management. Prediction is beneficial in HEI mining in its continued quest to study on the historical, current, and the continuance data relationships for particular situations from an educational context. This paper employed the famous ARIMA(p,d,q) model in forecasting HEI general student enrollment count for S.Y. 2019-2020 to S.Y. 2024-2025 using the university's overall enrollment data for S.Y. 2011-2012 to 2018-2019. Different p,d,q values were tested, and the model with the lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value was used for prediction. The simulation result showed that ARIMA(0,2,1) model appeared to be the statistically appropriate model to forecast enrollment in the university. The forecast showed an increasing trend in enrollment for the succeeding school years. Future researchers may utilize other data mining algorithms and consider the specific prediction of enrollment counts per colleges for better enrollment trend analysis and knowledge extraction.
Data Mining Application in Enrollment Management: A Case Study
International …, 2012
In the last two decades, number of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) grows rapidly in India. This causes a cut throat competition among these institutions while attracting the student to get admission in these institutions. Most of the institutions are opened in self finance mode, so all time they feel short hand in expenditure. Therefore, institutions focused on the strength of students not on the quality of education. Indian education sector has a lot of data that can produce valuable information. Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) is a multidisciplinary area focusing upon methodologies for extracting useful knowledge from data and there are several useful KDD tools to extract the knowledge. This knowledge can be used to increase the quality of education. But educational institution does not use any knowledge discovery process approach on these data.
Development of College Completion Model Based on K-means Clustering Algorithm
The amount of data stored in educational databases is rapidly increasing because of the increase in awareness and application of information technology in the field of higher education. What can be done with these databases is to mine the hidden knowledge in it. This paper is designed to present and justify the capabilities of data mining. The main contribution of this paper is the development of college completion model based on k-means clustering algorithm. The data stored in the Student Information and Accounting System from 2009 to 2013 was used to perform an analysis of study outcome taking into consideration not to include in the final result any identifying information to protect their privacy. The results showed that majority of the students belong to the cluster which needs intervention. The dataset used can be improved by including data of students currently enrolled. The result obtained can be used as a decision support tool. The WEKA software was used to build the college completion model using k-means clustering.

The large number of courses offered in an educational institution raises new problems related to the selection of specialization courses. Students experience difficulties and confusion in determining the course to be taken when compiling the study plan card. The purpose of this study was to cluster student value data. Then the values that have been grouped are seen in the pattern (pattern) of the appearance of the data based on the values they got previously so that students can later use the results of the patterning as a guideline for taking what skill courses in the next semester. The method used in this research is the K-Means and FP-Growth methods. The results of this rule can provide input to students or academic supervisors when compiling student study plan cards. Lecturers and students can analyze the right specialization subject by following the pattern given. This study produces a pattern that shows that the specialization course with the theme of business information syst...
Application of K-means Clustering Algorithm for Mining Educational Data
2012
Higher education is a vital area for any successful country. All research and inventions mostly comes from higher education. Top most valuable professional like engineers, managers, scientists are comes from the channel of higher education. It would be better for institutions and universities to effectively trace the moving path of its students and alumni. Depending on the path of its passed out students universities can change its current strategy and forthcoming ones. Data mining is used to extract meaningful information and to develop significant relationships among variables stored in large data set/ data warehouse. K-means clustering is a popular clustering algorithm based on the partition of data. Clustering analysis method is one of the main analytical methods in data mining; the method of clustering algorithms will influence the clustering result directly. This proposed paper discusses the K-means clustering algorithm and analyzes student’s educational data. Here K-means clu...
Data Mining in Higher Education Sector
International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology, 2017
Data mining is the process of extracting hidden and useful information from a huge amount of data. It analyzes the data from different sources and convert them into significant information. Today, there is a big challenge for the institutions for predicting the career path related to higher education of the students. So, it would be a big task for the institutions to find the students who will be suitable for a particular course according to their expertise & area of interests and to find the students who will need more guidance and counselling in a specific area. Management of institution also need to have more information related to the results of the students, their success rate in the new courses offered etc. Here, the problem faced by students and higher education institutions for higher education will be discussed. So, 'Data Mining' is to solve all these types of problems. It is a better tools to analyze & predict result of the students and helps to institutions in the decision making more smartly and accurately. In this paper, there is a small try to make use of one of the data mining techniques-J48 algorithm to predict the result of the students along with Data Mining tool 'Weka' which will be used for the classification of the data.
Efficient Clustering Technique for University Admission Data
2012
Educational Data Mining (EDM) is the process of converting raw data from educational systems to useful information that can be used by educational software developers, students, teachers, parents, and other educational researchers. In this paper, we present an efficient clustering technique for King Abdulaziz University (KAU) admission data. The model uses K-Means algorithm. The clustering quality is evaluated using the DB internal measure. Experimental results show that K-Means achieves the minimum DB value that gives the best fits natural partitions. Additional analysis is also presented from the perspective of university admission office.
