Development of Nano Crystalline Nickel Coating for Engineering Applications
Key Engineering Materials, 2010
The current research focuses on developing nano-crystalline nickel coating for engineering applications through pulse plating technique. Based on the literature survey, the current density, duty cycle and frequency were identified as important grain refining parameters. Coating was done over a mild steel sample after mechanical polishing, vapour degreasing and anodizing. Experiments were conducted using the three determining parameters and their influence on the properties of the coating was evaluated. Coatings were then characterized for the surface morphology and hardness. The XRD analysis for the surface morphology resulted in the grain size of 19 nm and the hardness measured from the microhardness tester was 677 HV which is higher than the hardness reported in the available literatures. The influence of the pulse plating parameters on the grain size and hardness of the coating has been listed out for the benefit of the scientific community.
Nitriding of nanocrystalline pure Fe induced by surface mechanical attrition treatment
MATEC Web of Conferences, 2015
Properties of nanocrystalline (nc) materials are different from, and often superior to those of conventional coarse-grained counterparts. Unfortunately, it is still difficult to obtain "ideal" (e.g. full-density, residual stress-free, flaw-free, porosity-free and contamination-free) nc bulk sample by using the present preparation methods. Recently, a new technique named surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) was developed. SMAT enables the fabrication of an nc surface layer on various bulk metals. The nc layer is free of contamination and porosity because the nanocrystallization process is induced by the severe plastic deformation at very high strain rates. In this work, a pure Fe plate was subjected to the SMAT and its microstructure were characterized. The effect of the surface nanocrystalline layer on the gas nitriding process at a lower temperature was also investigated by using structural analysis. The surface nanocrystallization evidently enhances nitriding kinetics and promotes the formation of an ultra-fine polycrystalline compound layer. The results of the investigation showed that this new gas nitriding technique can effectively increase the hardness of the resulting surface layer in comparison with conventional nitriding, demonstrating a significant advancement for materials processing.
Electrodeposition of Corrosion resistant Nanostructured Ni-Fe Alloy Coatings
International Journal of Applied Engineering and Management Letters (IJAEML, 2019
Nanostructured Ni-Fe alloy coatings was developed on mild steel panels using electrolytic sulphate bath. The composition of the electrolytic bath and the experimental parameters were optimized. Corrosion behaviour of the developed Ni-Fe alloy coatings were evaluated in 3.5% NaCl solution using potentio-dynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques. Highest corrosion resistance was observed for coatings at 3 A dm-2. Surface Morphology of the coatings was also characterised by SEM.
Tribology in Industry, 2017
A technology to improve the tribological and mechanical surface properties of iron alloys is developed based on the electroless nickel plating. The technology combines sol-gel and electroless deposition technique. Novel nanocomposite coatings are obtained consisting of Nickel-phosphorusnanodiamond (Ni-P-ND). The ND sol is added directly to the electroless NiP solution. A suitable surfactant is added to achieve well-dispersed ND particles in the electroless solution to facilitate their embodiment and equal distribution in the coating. Substrates of steel 17CrNiMo6 and spheroidal graphite cast irons are used for the manufacture of the iron alloys specimens. The surface morphology and microstructure observation performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical metallography confirms the influence of ND particles on the coating structure. The structural phase investigation by X Ray analysis indicates a transformation of the amorphous phase to a crystalline one such as Ni, Ni3P after coatings' heat treatment. The microhardness investigation by Knoop

In this study, single-layer and three-layer nickel-based coatings were fabricated on 316L SS by laser additive manufacturing. The phase characterization, microstructure observation, and microhardness analysis of the coatings were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and microhardness tester. And the wear resistance of the coatings was analyzed through dry sliding friction and wear test. The results show that the cross-section microstructure of the three-layer nickel-based coating is different from that of the single-layer one under the influence of heat accumulation; the dendrite structure in the central region of the former is equiaxial dendrite, while that of the latter still remains large columnar dendrites. The existence of solid solution phase γ-(Fe, Ni) and hard phases of Ni17Si3, Cr5B3, Ni3B in the coating significantly improve the wear resistance of the coating, and the microhardness is nearly 2.5 times higher than that of the substrate...

The coatings are deposited on austempered ductile iron (ADI) samples. The composition of cast iron samples is: Fe-3,63C-2,59Si-0,30Mn-0,010S-0,034P-0,53Cu wt. %. The samples are put under isothermal hardening at 900oС for an hour and isothermal retention at 290 oС for 2 hours with the aim to receive a lower bainite structure. The wear resistance experimental testing is carried out using Taber-Abraser test machine by disk to disk classical method. The microstructure observations of the coatings and padding are performed using an optical microscope GX41 OLIMPUS also the coatings’ microhardness by Knoop Method is examined. The wear resistance, microstructure, thickness and microhardness of the as plated and thermally processed at 290oС for 6 hours coatings are defined.
Formation of nanostructured NiAl coating on carbon steel by using mechanical alloying
a b s t r a c t Nanostructured NiAl intermetallics coatings were generated on carbon steel by using mechanical alloying in ambient temperature and pressure. Ni and Al powders were mixed with the composition of Ni-50 at% Al. The process involved powder particles trapped between the ball and cold welding at surface. Coatings were examined using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the phase transmutation during process and subsequent heat treatment are strongly dependent on mechanical alloying time. After 480 min heat treatment of mechanically alloyed sample, only NiAl peaks were viewed. Ball encounters and failures consecutively reduced the coarse grains of the coating to the nanoscale. The size of nanocrystalline grains in the NiAl coating ranged between 28 and 130 nm. The creation of the coatings was studied at milling intervals between 60 and 600 min. The average thickness and hardness of the surface layers at 480 min, were 470 m and 930 HV, respectively.
A nanostructured surface layer was formed in Fe-30 wt pct Ni alloy by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). The microstructure of the surface layer after SMATwas investigated using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The analysis shows that the nanocrystallization process at the surface layer starts from dislocation tangles, dislocation cells, and subgrains to highly misoriented grains in both original austenite and martensite phases induced by strain from SMAT. The magnetic properties were measured for SMAT Fe-30 wt pct Ni alloy. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) of the nanostructured surface layers increase significantly compared to the coarse grains sample prior to SMAT. The increase of Ms for SMAT Fe-30 wt pct Ni alloy was attributed to the change of lattice structure resulting from strain-induced martensitic transformation. Meanwhile, Hc was further increased from residual microstress and superfined grains. These were verified by experiments on SMAT pure Ni and Co metal as well as liquid nitrogen-quenched Fe-30 wt pct Ni alloy.
Mechanical behavior of annealed electrochemically deposited nanocrystalline nickel-iron alloys
Materials Testing, 2020
Nanocrystalline nickel-iron layers are produced electrochemically on copper discs by varying the current density and then annealed in a vacuum furnace at a temperature range between 200 and 800 °C. Grain size, iron content, texture and microstrain of the microstructure are primarily characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Instrumented indentation tests and microbending tests for mechanical characterization are carried out. The iron contents of the investigated layers are 5.7, 8.8, 13.5 and 17.7 wt.-%. By varying the annealing temperature, the reduction of the microstrains is initiated at 200 °C and ends at a temperature of about 280 °C. Primary recrystallization starts slightly higher at 220 °C and is completed at 300 °C. With higher iron content, the indicated temperatures shift to slightly higher values. Indentation modulus, Young's modulus, indentation hardness and strength change considerably after the annealing treatment. Fracture strain at the edge, as a measure of ducti...
