Nowadays, 21st-century education emphasizes creative thinking skills among students all over the world. Creativity is not only limited to art education but can also apply to STEM education inclusive of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to solve the real-world problems. However, there are still few studies in Malaysia that focused on creativity in secondary school. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of students' creativity based on four creativity domains including fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration. The research used survey design involving 54 students that underwent Chemistry subject in Melaka Tengah district as the sample. This study used an open-ended question consisting of a Chemistry Creativity Test to collect data. The data were analyzed using a quantitative and qualitative approach. The study found that overall levels of chemistry students' creativity were at the lowest. The result also reported the majority of chemistry students were unable to solve the real-world problem in many ways, lacking in producing a lot of ideas, the ideas were less originality and lack of idea elaborations. The implication of this study is to provide awareness of teachers to improve the student' creative thinking through effective teaching and learning strategy.
Chemistry education research, which focuses on the more specific field of teaching and learning chemistry, has emerged as a new field of research. Chemistry education lies somewhere in between the chemistry as a science as well as educational sciences. It is a specific sub-discipline of chemistry which requires bringing elements of human learning theories together with the particular chemistry content to facilitate learning. Chemistry education as a science should be continuously developed base on research widely carried out. The chemistry education research has to play a mediator role in translating the recent discoveries in the field of chemistry into the content that is easy to understand by young people at school. The aim of this study is to provide an outline for the development of chemistry education research and analyze the papers published in highly respected international science/chemistry education journals that published in English in terms of content and methodological aspects. For this purpose, chemistry education research papers published in the last 15 years in international journals were subjected to analysis. The papers were analyzed in terms of content, subjects studied, research design. A literature search through the online mediums and libraries yielded over thousand chemistry education papers published since 1997. This analysis results will be presented in terms of frequently studied subject matters and titles as well as methodological trends in chemistry education research papers. The findings of this study will be illuminating the contribution of different nation to the development of chemistry education research knowledge and also the current trends leading the world.

Chemistry Education is considered as a key agent of development, either as a way of developing human capacity, increasing the skilled workforce for modernization, or as a matter of personal freedom, developing capability and empowerment. Nigeria, as a nation, is still wadding in a muddy pull in seeking the right way to terminate her total dependence on foreign nations for technological expertise in fields of Science and Technology. The nation has produced many scientists, engineers and technologist yet we import services and goods in these fields from other countries which resulted in a recessed economy. This paper therefore discussed the loopholes in the present secondary school chemistry education and recommended the way forward in terms of restructuring the curriculum themes to produce a functional chemistry education, restructuring the chemistry practical activities to integrate improvisation with locally available materials and chemical processes designed to meet the need of th...
TEACHING CHEMISTRY: A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE (Atena Editora)
TEACHING CHEMISTRY: A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE (Atena Editora), 2022
This article proposes a comparison between a theoretical and experimental class referring to the assembly and operation of a galvanic battery, for students of the third grade of high school. There were learning issues in the two researched modalities and the importance of laboratory classes. The presence of chemistry in the lives of individuals and its interaction with the environment infer the importance of its learning for the formation of the citizen. Therefore, chemistry classes at school are important for the relationship between the reality of students and social chemical themes. Although easy access to information is a characteristic nowadays, providing reflections, critical analysis and developing ethical values in students based on chemical concepts is a task of the school and the teachers. As a mixed methodological aspect, four classes from the third grade of high school were selected as a sample, named A, B, C and D. Classes A and B were separated from classes C and D and a questionnaire was applied to compare results and propose discussions. The supremacy of the experimental activity was observed when compared to the theoretical one. The resignification of concepts and the mobilization of skills and competences during an investigative experimentation confirms its importance as a methodology to generate learning.
Science & Education, 2013
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and UNESCO have proposed that the International Year of Chemistry, 2011, should make a strong educational contribution to the goals of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. This emphasis is absolutely necessary because education for sustainability remains practically absent nowadays in many high school and university chemistry curricula all over the world. Behind this lack of attention to the current situation of planetary emergency, there are several obstacles that we analyse in this paper. We firstly discuss an extended conception of "pure Chemistry"-object of chemists' research and teaching-the object of which would just be to increase knowledge: moral problems should only appear in connection to the use of the applications of science by, generally, nonscientists. This belief that genuine scientific activity lies beyond the reach of moral judgment is logically transferred to teaching, voluntarily limited to the transmission of the corpus of knowledge. Consequently, the challenges of sustainable development, with so many social implications, are put aside. After questioning this and other obstacles, we develop the possible contribution of chemistry and chemical education to the construction of a sustainable future, in accordance with the goals of the International Year of Chemistry.
