Families find various ways to adjust to the consequences brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the new normal setting. While the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries, until then, experienced tremendous problems in securing a job and stable income, and now their situations are aggravated by the pandemic. This study aimed to determine the: (1) profiles; (2) challenges encountered; (3) socio-emotional development (perceived effects of the pandemic on attitudes, emotions, and socialization); and (4) coping mechanisms and suggestions of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program family beneficiaries in Sagpon, Daraga, Albay to overcome their socio-emotional changes. The researchers visited and assisted 10 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program families in answering the survey questionnaire with minimum health protocols observed. Key informant interviews were also conducted with 5 consenting families to collect more data on their experiences and coping mechanisms. The responses from the survey questionnaire were analyzed and interpreted using statistical tools and thematic analysis, while data from the key informant interviews used the case study method. The results revealed that the participants disagreed that they perceived the effects of the pandemic on their attitudes and emotions. In socialization, they believed that it is true to some extent that they experienced some changes. Among their perceived effects of the pandemic on their socio-emotional development were symptoms of hypochondriasis, anxiety, paranoia, and introversion. As coping mechanisms, they suggested praying, meditating, and doing collective hobbies with the family. An intervention is recommended to help the participants with their socio-emotional difficulties.
The Family Journal
Cognizant of the nature and type of family as factors that affect the experience and coping of its members, this study sought to examine the impact of the pandemic on overseas Filipino workers’ (OFW) families using a qualitative instrumental case study of four OFW families. Three themes emerged from the analysis: (1) worry over the conditions of the distant family members, (2) disruptions in plans and family relationships, and (3) monitoring and caring from a distance. From these findings, it could be reflected that despite the negative effects of the pandemic, OFW families can recreate patterns over time to retain their familial relations and routines and protect members from coronavirus and its consequences.
Behind the Parents Light: A Phenomenology of the Adjustments of Overseas Filipino Workers Children
International Journal of New Technology and Research, 2020
Background: A chronic problem in the Philippines is that many children are growing up without their parents because of lack of regular employment. Working abroad is a necessity and the only option they can take in order to make their lives better and for their children. It creates an impact in their daily lives which was obtained from different experiences. Method: This qualitative paper made use of a phenomenological research design to understand the lived experiences of the participants, specifically Overseas Filipino Workers' Children, relative to the central question: "What are the adjustments of Philippine School Doha students who grew up without their parents?" Data were gathered through a twenty-five semi-structured interview; and were analyzed using an inductive approach in theme development. Findings: Findings have shown the difficulty in adjustments and living of children in terms of adjustments, coping mechanism, emotional effects, and attitude gaps for the past years; which implies the changes in their development along with their other life experiences. Conclusion: The implication of parental migration affects their families left behind. Their relationship can be distressed if the parents do not communicate to their children. Their relationship with their children can face challenges. It leaves the children struggling with coping during the time of parental absence. Recommendation: The researchers recommend that there must be communication between the parents and their children left behind to maintain a positive relationship. The presence of the parents must be felt by the child through communicating with any means despite the distance.

Post-Disaster Mental Health Among Parent-Child Dyads After a Major Earthquake in Indonesia
Journal of abnormal child psychology, 2015
The interdependent adjustment of children and their parents following disasters has been well documented. We used the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to provide an appropriate analytical framework for examining how family members may contribute to each other's post-disaster mental health. Independent self-reports were collected from parent-child dyads (n = 397) residing in a rural community in Indonesia that was devastated by a major earthquake. Elementary school children (M = 10 years; 51 % female) and one of their parents (M = 41 years; 73 % female) each reported on their disaster exposure, posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, and general distress. The APIM was used to examine mental health within dyads and moderation by gender across dyads. Children reported lower disaster exposure and fewer PTS symptoms, but similar general distress levels, as their parents. Children's and parents' disaster-specific PTS symptoms were the strongest predictor of their own ge...
Ang Pagsalo: A Parentification Study Among Female Adolescents.pdf
2018
Parentification or adolescents' adoption of adult family roles by providing instrumental or emotional support for their family can have a huge impact to an adolescent in terms of his/her social/emotional adjustment and perception of marriage. Many studies have discussed about parentification and the adolescents’ social-emotional adjustment, but few studies were about parentification and perception of marriage. This study aimed to know if there is a significant difference between perception of marriage and the different types of social/emotional adjustment among female adolescents in the concept of the Filipino family whose score ranged from average to high on the Parentification Questionnaire. The researchers utilized a quantitative research design and purposive sampling to gather data. Researchers used Weinberger Adjustment Inventory Scale to measure the parentified adolescents’ type of social-emotional adjustment; Marital Attitude Scale which has 3 separate scales (IMS, GAMS and AMS) to measure the parentified adolescents’ perception of marriage. The data gathered are statistically analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey Test. The results have shown significant difference between the social/emotional adjustment of the parentified female adolescents’ and their perception of marriage in regards with their negative attitudes towards marriage and in one aspect of marriage which is the trust.
Experiences and Coping of Low-Income Parents during COVID-19 Pandemic
Journal of advances in education and philosophy, 2022
This research investigated and described the experiences and ways of coping among low-income parents of La Paz, San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines during COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has primarily affected Filipino families most particularly the low-income earners. Income loss for affected individuals is assumed to start at the beginning of the crisis and lasts the duration of the crisis. Most of the respondents receive wage which are spent for their children"s basic needs. They are not financially capable of providing gadgets for their child/children as well as continuous internet connection. Majority of parents are not permanently employed for they are probably on-call, seasonal workers, small scale entrepreneur, self-employed and/or farmer. Parents encountered and experienced delayed payments of their medical expenses and monthly utility bills. Some participants were laid off from their jobs/works and with this condition they barely avail of essential services. In reality, the crisis might exacerbate savings depletion at the onset due to the delay in assistance. Parent participants cope with the adverse economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic by venturing on other form/mode of earning income like online selling, farming and fishing.

Parental involvement and financial means both play a role in sufficing the needs of children; however, it is common for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) to sacrifice one after the other. While several studies have investigated the effects of this on children, the emotional toll of immigration-related separation through the narratives of those affected by this remains an overlooked facet. This study explores the lived experiences of adolescents whose parents are Overseas Filipino Workers to gain perspectives from their personal sentiments on such circumstances. Using a phenomenological approach, six (6) participants were gathered through a purposive-sampling method and interviewed through face-to-face and online modality. The findings revealed that emotional and psychological effects may vary as there are positive outcomes such as acceptance and self-reliance, and negative manifestations like jealousy and feelings of misery. Family expectations, gender roles and relationship dynamics have also influenced them since comparison, societal beliefs and debt of gratitude come into play. Despite this, they are able to cope with their support systems and other avenues such as academics and social media expressions. Based on the findings, evidence indicates that adolescents with OFW parents predominantly experience burdensome effects rather than positive ones.
