Optimal Setting of Interline Power Flow Controller for Congestion and Contingency Management
FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology
The effect of outages in transmission lines and generator units can be predictable for stable and reliable operation of power system through contingency assessment. Hence, contingency assessment is an important task for stable and effective operation of power system. In this paper, a method of placement of interline power flow controller (IPFC) based on the probability of severity has been proposed. Contingency ranking of lines has been done using Composite Severity Index which is a probabilistic based strategy for the placement of IPFC. IPFC is placed on the line with highest probability of severity during the occurrence of different outages. Thereafter, the size of the IPFC was optimized using cuckoo search algorithm. The proposed methodology has been applied on the IEEE 14 bus system data and results presented. The system overall CSI, active and reactive power were reduced by 7.31%, 10.17% and 14.46% respectively. The results show that optimal placement of IPFC effectively reduce...

As a result of privatization of the electrical industry the power transmission lines have to transfer power at their maximum transmission limits because of the competitive scenario of the electrical market. Hence, secured operation of power system has become one of the most important issues of modern era. In this paper, a probability of severity based placement strategy for Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) has been proposed based on Composite Severity Index (CSI). The composite severity index provides an exact measure of stress in the line in terms of mega watt overloading and voltage instability. IPFC is placed on the line which has the highest probability of severity during the occurrence of different outages. The IPFC has been tuned for a multiobjective function using Differential Evolution (DE) and the results have been compared with genetic Algorithm (GA). To verify the proposed method, it has been tested and implemented on IEEE 14 and 57 bus systems.
Contingency Selection and Ranking Approach for Power Systems
International Journal of Computing and Digital Systems
In this paper, an efficient technique based on ranking lines and generators outage contingencies according to their severity has been developed. The technique is based on a defined performance index (PI). The elements of this PI are obtained by calculating the generators and lines, outages distributing factors instead of repeating the load flow analysis. Results for the Saudi Electric Company (SEC) in the central operating area have been obtained with the proposed technique and are compared with those obtained by the conventional ac-dc load flow methods.
Power System Contingency Ranking Using Fast Decoupled Load Flow Method
Voltage instability is the phenomena associated with heavily loaded power systems. It is normally aggravated due to large disturbance. The Power system security is one of the significant aspects, where the proper action needs to be taken for the unseen contingency. In the event of contingency, the most serious threat to operation and control of power system is insecurity. Therefore, the contingency analysis is a key for the power system security. The contingency ranking using the performance index is a method for the line outages in a power system, which ranks the highest performance index line first and proceeds in a descending manner based on the calculated PI for all the line outages. This helps to take the prior action to keep the system secure. In this paper Fast Decoupled power flow method is used for the power system contingency ranking for the line outage based on the Active power and Voltage performance index. The ranking is given by considering the overall performance index, which is the summation of Active power and voltage performance index. The proposed method is implemented on a IEEE-14 bus system.

In these post COVID times, the world is going through a massive restructuring which India can use to its benefit by attracting foreign industrial investment. The major requirement is a reliable and ecofriendly electrical power source. Of late, renewable energy sources have increasingly become popular as alternative source of electricity. They can provide immense aid in improving the reliability of the power system, when placed properly. The alternative integrated energy sources along with FACTS devices can provide a promising future for reliable power systems. In this paper, an effective location for the solar power unit and Interline Power Flow Controller using Line Severity Index is proposed in order to avoid contingencies. An Indian 62 bus system and IEEE 57 bus system are considered for the study. The Firefly algorithm is used to tune the IPFC in the Integrated Energy Systems scenario, for a dual objective function. The effect of placement of the solar unit and the optimized IPF...
Improved Transmission line Contingency Analysis Using Fast Decoupled Load Flow
2013
Contingency analysis technique is being widely used to predict the effect of outages in power systems, like failures of equipment, transmission line etc. The off line analysis to predict the effect of individual contingency is a tedious task as a power system contains large number of components. Practically, only selected contingencies will lead to severe conditions in power system like violation of voltage and active power flow limits. The process of identifying these severe contingencies is referred as contingency selection and this can be done by calculating performance indices for each contingencies. In this paper, the contingency selection by calculating two kinds of performance indices; active power performance index (PIP)
Fuzzy Approach to Critical Bus Ranking under Normal and Line Outage Contingencies
Identification of critical or weak buses for a given operating condition is an important task in the load dispatch centre. It has become more vital in view of the threat of voltage instability leading to voltage collapse. This paper presents a fuzzy approach for ranking critical buses in a power system under normal and network contingencies based on Line Flow index and voltage profiles at load buses. The Line Flow index determines the maximum load that is possible to be connected to a bus in order to maintain stability before the system reaches its bifurcation point. Line Flow index (LF index) along with voltage profiles at the load buses are represented in Fuzzy Set notation. Further they are evaluated using fuzzy rules to compute Criticality Index. Based on this index, critical buses are ranked. The bus with highest rank is the weakest bus as it can withstand a small amount of load before causing voltage collapse. The proposed method is tested on Five Bus Test System.
IRJET-Contingency ranking of power systems using a performance index
Power system security and contingency analysis are important tasks in modern energy management systems. Contingency ranking using the performance index is a method for the line outages in a power system, which ranks the highest performance index line first and proceeds in a descending manner based on the calculated PI for all the line outages. This helps to take the prior action to keep the system secure. In the present work the Newton Raphson load flow method is used for the power system contingency ranking for the line outage based on the Active power and Voltage performance index.
Line Stability Index Based Optimal Placement of Unified Power Flow Controller
International Journal of Energy and Power Engineering, 2017
Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a powerful device which can control three power system parameters and it must be located optimally to obtain satisfactory performance due to excessive cost. This paper presents an approach to find the optimal placement of UPFC based on the line stability index. The line stability index can provide accurate information of the stability condition of the lines of the system and can also determine the weakest bus in the system. The index is evaluated for partial network of Myanmar National grid transmission network using MATPOWER Toolbox and a line having largest value of the index is the most critical line where the optimal location of UPFC. The proposed placement approach is shown to be effective for finding appropriate location of UPFC and the effects of UPFC allocation based on line stability index are also demonstrated using Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT). The optimal placement of UPFC based on the line stability index resulted in enhancing the power flow control of the system, reducing the system losses as well as improving the system voltage profile.
