The segmentation of canary island tourism markets by expenditure: implications for tourism policy
Tourism Management, 2005
The Canary Islands have an indisputable comparative and competitive edge within the European Union as regards their tourism products. The present study takes a segmented market approach to study the Canary Islands tourism market, featuring a range of tourism products, each of which satisfies to a greater or lesser extent the needs of one segment of demand. It has two objectives: firstly, to ascertain which segments of demand are currently acquired at destination and secondly, to identify within these segments the niches associated with the highest expenditure. This will enable us to draw up guideliness for a regional policy on product innovation that focuses on these niches and thus generates higher levels of local development.

Rethinking the economic contribution of tourism: case study from a Mediterranean Island

This paper aims to identify the profiles of the different segments of tourists who visit the destination of Cuenca, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Methodologically, a quantitative approach with a descriptive scope was used through surveys with systematic random sampling. Several questions were analyzed divided into four groups: demographic characteristics, travel characteristics, aspects related to the service or product, and the evaluation of the satisfaction of the tourist offer. In order to evaluate the factors that motivated the visit, the preferred activities, and the level of general satisfaction and attributes of the destination, linguistic terms associated with sets of neutrosophic values were used, with which subjectivity and the indeterminacy of the answers could be managed.
Measuring the main determinants of tourism flows to the Canary Islands from mainland Spain
Journal of Air Transport Management, 2018
The analysis presented in this paper is innovative, due to the lack of studies analysing how airlines compete in managing demand for domestic passenger air transport from mainland Spain to the Canary Islands. This research examines five Canary Island airports on 52 routes in order to explain the determinants of tourist air travel in this market. The regression analysis used the 2-stage least squares structural equation approach' with the implementation of instrumental variables in three equations: i) demand, ii) market share, and iii) price on each route. The results show that tourism in the Canary Island is very sensitive to income of the generating regions and prices of airline tickets.-How do airlines compete in a liberalized market such as Spain?
Diversification Through Segmentation in Mediterranean Tourism Destinations
2012
Mature tourism areas in the Mediterranean region usually face two main challenges firstly a need to improve the quality of tourism and secondly a need to reduce the seasonality of demand that is usually concentrated in the summer months. In order to overcome these challenges, it is necessary to improve the knowledge about tourists and as such be able to adapt the product and the rest of the marketing mix variables to their needs. In this respect, market segmentation is one of the most popular concepts used to improve knowledge of the tourist consumer. This paper explores the possibilities of the segmentation technique based on the benefits sought by tourists, and provides a comparison of the results obtained in two different tourism seasons. The research has been conducted in the island of Mal/orca, one of the most important mature mass tourism areas in the Mediterranean region. The results present several implications fo~ marketing programmes of mature mass tourism destinations, th...

The analysis of the hotel accommodation in an autonomous community can be considered as an instrument for measuring the volume and the importance of the tourist activity into a regional scale, so much from the territorial point of view as in economic and social aspects. This study, referred to the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, is essentially based upon the analysis of the hotel sector, throughout last decade: spatial distribution, types and categories of hotel establishments, hotel demand and levels of bed-places occupancy. The aim of this article is to do a balance of the current situation on a regional scale and to establish some of the principal features and attributes that distinguish and define nowadays the tourist model in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria.
Rural tourism has developed in recent decades with an increase in the activities available to tourists. In this paper the authors apply a cluster analysis for the segmentation of rural tourism in La Palma, Canary Islands. They consider the level of environmental attitudes of tourists as a variable explaining market segmentation. The results show that there is a large heterogeneity of market segments and that the traditional activity of agro-tourism represents a small share of the total market. The segments with a greater economic impact and producing greater tourist satisfaction are those in which tourists also exhibit higher levels of environmental behaviour. Thus, rural tourist destinations can improve their economic performance by focusing on those segments attracting tourists with higher environmental concern, and by adopting policies that enhance the environmental profile of the segments.
Analysis and comparison of tourism competitiveness in Spanish coastal areas
Investigaciones Regionales - Journal of Regional Reserach, 2020
Spain is one of the four world leaders in coastal tourism. To keep the top position in such a highly competitive market, coastal managers in Spain need to constantly monitor the social, ecological, and economic components of ‘sun and sea’ tourism. Thus, the main goals of the present study are to analyse the most visited Spanish coastal destinations and to evaluate their competitiveness relative to each other. Geomarketing Methods were applied to evaluate seaside destinations pursuant to socio-economic and physico-geographical parameters. Results show that the most competitive destination is the Canary Islands, followed by Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Andalusia and Murcia regions.
