Higher Education and Social Media: An Empirical Evidence from Jordan and Malaysia

In the last decade, social media seeks the attention of many researchers. As prior studies argued, that social media has dynamic capabilities to interact and accessibility among students. Social media is one of those factors, who has the ability to play an essential role in a dynamic learning environment. The uniqueness of social media opens new horizons for students to enhance their experiences in the field of higher education. It has been observed that the adaptation of social media is a phenomenon among students of higher education. In this study, the researcher examines the relationship between lecturer and students through social media. This study took a convenience sample data from undergraduate students of Malaysia and Jordan. The main objective of this study is to explore the motivation of students to words social media for educational purposes. Secondly, this study also investigates the perception of social media as a communication tool for lecturers and students. Moreover, the researcher highlighted the attitude differences among Malaysian and Jordanian students. The study found that respondents are the frequent user of SM, and the most popular media is Facebook among them. Results show that students are reluctant to use SM for educational communication. However, if lecturers took this initiative and engaged students on SM for educational purposes, then students' attitude was more optimistic. Additionally, students consider SM as a powerful tool that has the potential to strengthen the level of communication between students and the lecturer.

EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF SAUDI STUDENTS -CASE STUDY: PRINCE SATTAM BIN ABDUL AZIZ UNIVERSITY

Purpose: The objective of the research study is to investigate whether there is a positive impact of the use of social media on undergraduate students' academic performances and their social interpersonal skills in the Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University. Design/methodology/approach: 64 samples were collected from full-time undergraduate students studying in Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University from different colleges including Community college, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Engineering and College of Pharmacy. The descriptive statistics analysis was used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics were used in testing the research hypotheses. The results obtained from the analyses were used to interpret the outcomes. Findings: The empirical results reveal that the students enjoy meeting new friends online using social media rather than meeting in person and for this reason they spend a lot of time-addicted. It is also confirmed that the bad comments are passed easily through social media affecting other's sentiments and most of them strongly believe that all the information in social media is true and reliable and the rumors were spread easily in social media. Further, it is also confirmed that social media does not support the Learning of the students. Practical Implications: The study confirms that the students exchange learning materials through social media and it helps them to update the developments in their college/university. The students believe that through Social media they have improved their communication skills and they can communicate with anyone at any time. It is also found that some of their teachers communicate with them and encourage them to use social media but for studying only. Originality/value: The research work is of its first kind as it focuses on the impact of social media on the academic performances of the students studying in Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, which has suggested effective means for effective implementation of social media strategy.

EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS: A STUDY AT SHAHEED BENAZIR BHUTTO UNIVERSITY, SHAHEED BENAZIRABAD

The current study is an attempt to determine the intensity of social media use among university students and the impact of social media on students’ academic performance. The survey based on the questionnaire was run to gather the required data for which 100 copies of the questionnaire were administered among the students – both 65 male and 35 female respondents. However, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp contributed equally to be used among the respondents at the highest extent of 95%. Whereas the second most used tool was Twitter contributing 60%. The majority of the respondents (80%) spent more than 5 hours regularly on social media. The homes were the places wherein the majority of the respondents contributing 45% use social media. The purpose of social media use among the majority of the respondents (60%) was to exchange academic things with friends. The respondents contributing 60% declined to believe if social media use negatively affects their academic performance. The majority of them contributing 55% were positive towards the statement if the social media use had improved their academic works. THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION: LITERATURE REVIEWED AND ANALYZED SYSTEMATICALLY

The intent of this systematically reviewed literature was to assess the impact of social media on students' academic achievement. The researcher gathered previously conducted articles from Scopus data base. He examined papers that were released in the years from 2008-2023. To guide the review, the researcher performed six actions; systematic literature review using PRISMA method (Mihret, G. et al., 2024). Among 30 scrutinized articles, the researcher retained 10 articles. The researcher used key words: Academic Performance, Social Media, Students, Academic Achievement, Academic Achievements, and Higher Education. The retrieval date for articles was 20 of May 2024. The publication stage that the researcher used was final articles not article in press and the document type was articles which were published in English language. Predominantly, the subject areas he used were Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities and Computer Sciences. The results showed that the positive impacts of social media among higher education settings appeared to be higher as compared to negative impacts. This means, there was a positive impact of using social Medias towards their academic achievement (Mushtaq and Benraghda).

Social Media and its Impact on Academic Performance among University Students

Social media has been suggested as an effective tool for educational purpose. Therefore, this study is conducted on two theories, constructivism theory and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Moreover, this study conducted an analysis of studies dedicated to social media use for collaborative learning and engagement based on previous research problems of models and theories. In addition, this study applied quantitative approach, and the questionnaire was conducted using 340 students. The results show that social media use is useful, enjoyable and easy to use. Moreover, the students had a feeling of satisfaction using it. They believe that social media can be used positively and that it can provide significant interaction, engagement and collaborative learning wi th respect to the Quran and Hadith, thus improving learners' performance. The results of this study also revealed the percentage and frequency of the tools of social media used for collaborative learning, sharing, discussion and publishing.

An Empirical Investigation of Students’ Attitudes Towards the Use of Social Media in Omani Higher Education

Although social media usage in higher education has been frequently examined, little is known regarding the differences in students' attitudes towards its use in the Omani higher education. Therefore, this study provides an opportunity to advance the understanding of these differences in attitudes by focusing on three different attributes, namely age, gender, and social media application. A total of 169 students enrolled at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman took part in the study by the medium of an online survey. The empirical data analysis triggered out that there was a significant difference in attitudes with regard to age groups, in which students aged between 18 and 22 years old are much interested in using social media than the others. Nevertheless, the findings also showed that there was no significant difference in attitudes with respect to social media application and gender. More interesting, the outcomes pointed out that WhatsApp is the most frequent application used by students for educational purposes.
