The requirements of bandwidth are increasing very fast in communication systems and therefore the effective solution is to use the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology, whereby several different wavelengths can carry information over one Polymer Optical Fiber (POF). Wavelength Division Multiplexer is an essential component to combine several different wavelengths before all wavelengths are carried together over single POF. In most instances, the conventional multiplexers are afflicted with certain disadvantages and one major disadvantage is that they are costly for most of the POF applications. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop self-fabricated 1x4 POF coupler as an economical optical multiplexer for WDM transmission over POF. The POF coupler has been fabricated by homemade fusion technique. Red LED with a 650 nm wavelength has been injected into the coupler for the purpose of characterization testing to analyze the level of power efficiency of the splitter. The characterization of POF coupler reveals that the maximum power efficiency could be reached up to 90%. The result exhibits that self-fabricated 1x4 POF coupler has great potential to be applied as optical multiplexer for WDM fiber technology due to the character of high-efficiency and low-cost.

The implementation of three channels wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network using a low cost and all POF components are developed. A low cost and high performance of 1x3 POF fused coupler/splitter using POF polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is fabricated as the multiplexer/de-multiplexer. Three visible LED light source transmitters; 470 nm, 520 nm and 650 nm are utilized in sending three data inputs; the CCTV and DVD video and audio signal. The optical lights are multiplexed into a single POF link and de-multiplexed back at the receiver end. The unwanted wavelengths are performed using thin color film filter before the receivers. With link margin 5 dB, the maximum POF link length is 25 meters which is suitable for informatics, infotainments, triple play in the field of last miles communications.

This chapter was presented to promote the development of Wavelength Division Multiplexing, WDM networking system based on Polymer Optical Fiber (POF). 1 × 3 POF coupler has been fully utilized to couple the WDM optical signals. An optimum efficiency analysis and mathematical modeling has been conducted to produce an effective device to be integrated into WDM-POF system. But despite its high speed data transmission feature, optical fiber technology remains an expensive option in optical network, although the installation costs associated with fiber through the transmission network can be minimized through the fabrication of 1 × 3 POF coupler.
