Effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL)

Proceedings of the International Conference On Applied Science and Technology 2019 - Social Sciences Track (iCASTSS 2019), 2019

This research was aimed at investigating effectiveness of project-based learning toward students' achievement. Two groups of student majoring in accounting were involved in the research. The groups of students who had same English level of ability according to their English lecturer were given a three-session English learning with project-based learning (PjBL) approach. The experiment group was given PjBL model and the control group was given conventional learning model. Upon learning, students of both groups were assigned to make a dialog with members of their group. Their performance in front of class was assessed by using assessment rubric developed in prior. In addition, they were assigned to make written complaint. Assessment result of both group were then analyzed to see difference of both group competence, how much percent was the increase.

Incorporating Project-Based Learning (PBL) Into a University Speaking Classroom: Why and How?

JURNAL BASIS, 2015

Learning a language means learning thelanguage knowledge (vocabulary and grammar) and the language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing). Of all the four skills, speaking skill is considered to be the most favourite and challenging one.It contains a complex process of constructing meaning and requires the language learners to produce linguistically and pragmatically correct utterances. To achieve such goals, a teacher who teaches speaking skills especially at a university level classroom should use a meaningful, appropriate and a challenging teaching method or technique. One of the methods that attract many language teachers' interests currently is project-based learning. Project-based learning is a teaching method in which the students gains knowledge and skills byworking for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. It empowers learners to pursue content knowledge on their own and demonstrate their new understandings through a variety of presentation modes. In this paper, the writer will discuss about speaking skill, teaching speaking skill, project-based learning definitions, characteristics and its steps, the reasons why English teachers especially at universities should incorporate project-based learning into a speaking classroom and an example on how to incorporate the project-based learning into a university speaking classroom.

The Effect of Project Based Learning to the Students’ Speaking Ability

Celtic: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching, Literature and Linguistics

Project based learning (PBL) is an appropriate and applicable learning method in all levels of education. In this method, the lecturer acts as a facilitator or the one who takes a main role in teaching and learning process. The aim of PBL is to solve problems and develop students’ critical thinking. It also encouraged the students’ way of thinking in doing or creating something. This method was implemented in English for Management class at. It was expected to make the students to be more creative facilitated by a discussion, sharing, and collaboration work. The aim of this study was to describe the implementation of PBL in non-English department class (Management department class) and to know the effect of PBL in students’ speaking ability. There were 25 students selected as the sample. The methodology used pre-experimental design. Data were collected by observation to answer the first research question and test to answer the second research question. The acquired quantitative dat...

Project-Based Learning: Dilemmas and Questions!

In this new era of fast communication and fast change of the technology, fast changes in the process of education are inevitable. Obtaining universal knowledge and skills in the schools is more than necessary. Experiential, hands-on and student-directed learning which are recommended by the educators more than 100 years ago, every day become more and more our need and reality.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) for Teaching English in SMA

2021

Project-based learning (PBL) is used to make learning like acquisition so that it is more natural and interesting and the students are interested and motivated in learning English. The objective of the research is to develop a model for teaching English using PBL which is feasible to develop the students' four English skills. The research method used is Educational Research and Development by designing a prototype consisting of the following steps: determining basic questions, designing a project, making a schedule, conducting the project, monitoring the project, examining the results, and evaluating the experience. The prototype was tried out for teaching English to SMA students, the weaknesses were revised, it was tried out again and revised until it became a feasible model. The result of the research shows that the model is feasible for the teacher to teach English and for the students to study and develop their four English skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing). It implies that project-based learning can be used by the English teachers to teach English to develop the students' four English skills.

Significance of Project-based Learning in Education

2021

Experiential learning is the main element in experience acquisition by witnessing items. It discusses different forms of teaching which are assumed to yield a positive result to students’ learning abilities. Project-based learning is the new form of instruction. Project Based Learning’s central concept is to associate the perspectives of students with the school life and provoke critical thought as learners acquire new skills. Although there are several adverse PBL-related consequences, the approach will maximize the strengths of current teaching techniques. Eventually, interaction with real life issues is accomplished by Experiential Training, and in particular by PBL. Students must assume accountability for the learning cycle in order to be effective in task or PBL by establishing targets, tracking, evaluating, and maintaining their encouragement from project start to finish. Nevertheless, such pathways do not exist spontaneously or readily for certain people. The learning atmosph...

The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Implementation of Project Based Learning: A Review

2015

Project Based Learning (PBL) as a learning model with scientific approach will accustom students to do the inquiry process which is believed to be able to improve the quality of education. By implementing PBL which belongs to constructive approach, it will enable the students-centered learning, so it will facilitate students to innovatively and creatively transfer their knowledges to the real world situation. However, there are only a few teachers who entirely understand on how the PBL with scientific method should be implemented. Therefore, teachers still get difficulties on its implementation. In the literature review, the writer would like to emphasize on the importance of improving PBL to increase the quality of education in order to prepare the human resources which have competitive and comparative superiority based on demanded quality standard of the 21 century era. Many researchers have conveyed their findings about the strengths of PBL to increase knowledges, skills and atti...

Redefining Project Based Learning in English Class

2018

This study used the experimental method with quasi experimental design, specifically, non-equivalent control group design. There were two groups, namely, experimental group in which it was given treatment by using PBL and control group in which it was give n no treatment. For collecting the data, both groups were given speaking test and selfconfidence questionnaire. For speaking, the data were collected using speaking test which was evaluated by two raters using analytic rubric consisting of five elements, namely accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Meanwhile, students' self-confidence was evaluated using a ready-made-self-confidence questionnaire which measured (1) language use anxiety, (2) causal attribution, (3) perceived L2 competence, and (4) self-efficacy. Both data were analyzed by using t-test to see the difference in means (1) between pre-and post-test of students' speaking achievements and of their self-confidence, and (2) of post-test of speaking achievements and of their self-confidence between the first and the second group. Regression analysis was also given to see the contribution of PBL to the variables in questions. The results showed that (1) there was a significant difference both in speaking achievement (t=8.828, p<.000) and self-confidence (t=7.968,p<.000) of the experimental group after being taught using PBL, (2) there was also a significant difference between experimental and control groups both in speaking ability (t=2.307, p<.027) and self-confidence (t=3.595, p<.001) , (3) the contribution of PBL to the students' speaking achievement was 99.7% and to self-confidence was 92.7%. In conclusion, PBL could be considered as an effective method in teaching speaking and in increasing students' self-confidence.

Analisis Model Pembelajaran Project Based Learning Untuk Meningkatkan Ketrampilan Komunikasi Dalam Organisasi

Jurnal PROFIT: Kajian Pendidikan Ekonomi dan Ilmu Ekonomi, 2021

Communication is the sending of information or messages to related parties. 80% of the skills or competencies needed are soft skills. 49% of soft skills are skills or abilities that must be present in each employee, namely basic communication skills. communication skills are not only used in work, but communication skills are also needed in the field, considering that communication skills are a point of the 21st century. Improving students' communication skills can be done through learning activities. These efforts can be carried out in several ways, namely the application of learning models that are useful to support communication skills in students. Many models that can be applied in learning are in the form of project-based learning models. The model applied in this research is a literature review (literature analysis). The PBL learning model can improve students' communication skills.
