An Assessment of Total Quality Management in Nigerian Private Universities

This paper assessed total quality management (TQM) in Nigerian private universities. The specific objectives of the study evaluated total quality management practices implemented in Nigerian private universities; ascertained the quality problems in Nigerian private universities and investigated the degree of conformity of private universities in Nigeria to NUC predetermined quality standards. The study adopted a cross-sectional quantitative research design, which was based on a positivist research philosophy. The population for this study consisted of staff of The Department of Student and Academic Administration of the seventy-nine (79) private universities' in Nigeria. About the sample size, a sample of five hundred staff of The Department of Student and Academic Administration of the private universities (500) were chosen as the sample for the conduct of this study. Structured questionnaires adapted from existing TQM scales was used to collect primary data from the study respondents. Descriptive, reliability, and factor analysis was carried out on the collected data. Study findings revealed the quality management practices in Nigeria private universities to revolve around customer focus and satisfaction, quality leadership, quality information and analysis, Human resource development, strategic planning management, internal quality results, top management commitment, and process management. Study findings through factor analysis also revealed the nature of quality problems experienced by Nigerian private universities to revolve around improvement problem, administrative issues, structural problems, process design problems, unstructured performance problems, efficiency problems, and conformance problems. The study concludes from its investigation of the quality conformance of Nigerian private universities to predetermine standards that conformance to objectives of the university programs is essential in the measurement of TQM in Nigerian private universities, conformance to curriculum, teaching staff and quality ratio, student admission requirements, graduation requirements and conformance to standard of degree examination are important areas that Nigerian private universities have to pay attention to as evidenced from the study findings.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT: A FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE IN THE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
This paper was designed to study fundamental issues that affect or impact on how quality management are implemented in Nigeria university context. It is a review of eight major papers focused on quality improvement of Nigerian universities. The research used a desk research methodology to critique areas hitherto overlooked by other researchers in the plan to improve quality services and management. The paper reveals that the challenge of management quality in Nigeria transcends the issue of finance or federal government allocation of resources. The paper presupposes that the issue of poor funding is critical to the development of quality service. However, it is not the exclusive responsibility of the federal government to finance the sector. Other stakeholders, such as state and local governments, as well as other private businesses, have responsibilities they must discharge.
This study examined the influence of total quality management and university goal achievement in higher institutions in Nigeria. It measures total quality management and goal achievement as a combined construct. The study therefore determined how this variable could predict goal achievement and quality in universities. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The study change the sample of 200 members of staff in a public owned university which are University of Lagos And Lagos State University respectively out of eleven universities in south west of Nigeria. The proportionate stratified random sampling was used to select the respondents. A questionnaire titles" Total Management Quality and Goal Achievement Questionnaire (TQMGAQ)", was used to collect data from the respondents. The inferential statistic of Pearson movement correlation co-efficient was used for the analysis at 0.05%. The result of the findings includes the following; there is a significant relationship between communication flow and goal achievement of universities in Nigeria. There is a significant relationship between team work and goal achievement of universities in Nigeria. There is a significant relationship between time management and goal achievement of universities in Nigeria. There is a significant relationship between societal demand and goal achievement of universities in Nigeria. Furthermore, the study revealed that there every decision reached on goal implemented is demonstrated and sent to various offices. Also, feedback mechanism is always encouraged in the university system. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that total quality management plays a vital role in universities in the world to achieving its goals. Based on the findings, certain recommendations were by the researcher. One of which is that to achieve TQM in the University of the Sampled University and Nigerian educational system as a whole, all hands must be on desk. All stakeholders of the industry should work together to alleviate the current state of the educational sector so that it can compete favourably with her counterpart in the globe.
University management perspective of quality: A review of Nigerian universities
The aim of this paper is to take a step back from the general debate surrounding the creation of a precise definition of quality in the context of university education. The paper investigates what principal officers in Nigeria universities perceived as quality from a rationale perspective rather than replicating the approach in a rationale environment. Rather, this paper investigates the reality as experienced by the principal officers who are involved in the day-to-day administration of their university. In view of this approach, a critical realist philosophy was adopted to help understand principal officers’ view of the debate. Thus, the study involved 29 principal officers in 6 universities. All the respondents had key roles in formulating, administering, and implementing issues relating to quality. The study findings reveal that many of the principal officers find it difficult to define quality though they assume they can recognise quality when they see it; however, observation of the 29 respondents who took part in the study revealed that these principal officers had a strong background in quantitative philosophy, thus giving them the assumption that quality must be measured and making it difficult to investigate or identify causal and missing mechanisms regarding the components of what to measure.

This study assesses total quality management practices among Higher Education Institutions. The driving force for this investigation includes issues of concern in recent years. An educational system which was once envied by countries in Africa and beyond is gradually losing its enviable position which may be attributed to the lack of TQM framework and inefficient influences of external quality assurance bodies within the Ghana Higher Education Institutions in monitoring the courses and modules offered and the type of teaching and learning that goes on in the institutions as the central point in this study. The mixed method approach was adopted, specifically both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Analysis were performed on three HEIs Namely: University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana, and University of Mines with a total population of 36.The findings from the study indicated the average level at which the critical success factors are adopted to achieve effective quality management in HEIs is 2.56 (51%). This percentage according to the researcher " s judgment shows that the level at which the critical success factors are practiced to achieve effective quality management in HEIs is relatively low since 51% of the respondents did not agree that the critical success factors for effective implementation of TQM in HEIs is actually adopted by the selected HEIs in this study. The findings from the interview responses led to the conclusion that there is absence of TQM philosophy in public HEIs. From the findings, it was concluded that management attitude towards TQM is partial. It revealed that management only show commitment towards Quality Assurance and Quality Control which are aspects of TQM and not Total Quality Management. This is said to be as a result of the philosophy of TQM not well-known and hence not well embraced.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT MECHANISMS: A REVIEW OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY PRINCIPAL OFFICERS
This paper aims to uncover quality management mechanisms that are considered necessary for the implementation of quality management in the context of Nigerian universities. A standard literature review was used to review the relevant literature on quality, quality management and Nigerian universities. The literature suggested a number of techniques and approaches or tools that are features of quality management but missing are important mechanisms that need to be in place to properly implement quality management in universities. Fifteen participants were involved across five universities. A purposive sampling method was used to select these five universities. The findings revealed three common major mechanisms that, while not identified as important factors in implementing quality management in other countries, are suggested by participants to be key in the Nigerian context.
University Quality Management Process A Review Of Nigerian University Principal Officers
The paper was design to investigate how the quality management process takes place in Nigerian universities. A standard literature review approach was used to identify gaps in past literature. The study collected information from 18 university principal officers who have an extensive role in university quality management. The paper used a qualitative approach to investigate principal officers’ knowledge of the quality management process in their universities in order to expand our knowledge about how quality management is carried out. The findings reveal that the quality of Nigerian universities is managed through a committee system set up in a way that allows everyone involved to contribute to the operation of the system independently.

The quality of education offered by the tertiary institutions in Nigeria in recent times has critically degenerated. Unfortunately, this has led to the unprecedented rise in the poor quality of Nigerian graduates which contributes to the very alarming high rate of unemployment in the country. This article therefore examines the relationship between total quality management (TQM), employee commitment and competitive advantage among tertiary institutions in Lagos State with a particular focus on the University of Lagos, using a survey research design with a random selection of 350 respondents from a population of 2,047 staff strength across the 11 faculties in the university. This study was conducted to assess the challenges to the implementation of Total Quality management in tertiary Institutions in Ghana with Tamale Polytechnic as case study. Total quality management practices and the challenges to the implementation in Tamale polytechnic were examined. Purposive sampling technique was used to select certain key respondents from the Polytechnic for the collection of data. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. This study revealed the absence of total quality management practices even though a quality assurance unit was part of the administrative body of the polytechnic. The challenges to its implementation emanated from the attitude of staff among of the polytechnic. Furthermore, the polytechnic lacked a policy plan to manage quality related issues. More so, management was not committed to the implementation of quality management practices in the Polytechnic.
