Amisos covers Baruthane Hill and its slopes in today's Samsun city. As the date of establishment is know to be VI B.C. It is thought that the city was founded by the Miletus. According to the information given by Strabo, the city was established in a productive and very good region. Therefore, it has always been the focus of attention of the states of the period. The city started to develop in the Hellenistic period. It’s golden age was at the time of king Pontus Mithridates VI. During the Mithradates VI. period, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pontus. Mithradates had built many temples in the city. Due to its location in Amisos and its location on trade routes, it also attracted the attention of Rome. As a result of the war of Mithradates VI. with Rome, the city came under Roman rule. Amisos developed further during the Roman period and it expanded to the slopes of Baruthane Hill, to Amisos Port. The city was given freedom during the reign of Emperor Augustus. We learn about the social life of the city of Amisos in the letters Plinius wrote to Emperor Trajan. Importance was given in Amisos, which is located in a good position for trade, especially to coin minting. It is thought that the first coins in the city were minted in the 4th century. Portraits of Gods and Goddesses are depicted on these coins. The first king of Pontus, who minted coins, was Mithradates III. During the Mithradates VI. period coin minting expanded further in city. Coins minted in Amisos were spread over many place in Ancient World. When it came to the Roman Empire period, coins with the name of City and gods such as Athena, Dionysos, Poseidon, Hermes were minted. These coins show us what an important trade center the city of Amisos was. Amisos coins found in different parts of the Black Sea reflect the commercial relations of the city with other cities. We learn most of the information about the Pontus and Roman period of the Amisos City from the works of the ancient writers Strabo and Plinus the Younger. Especially Strabo gives comprehensive information about the city.
