Medical Image Watermarking techniques -A Comparison
Advancement in the field of internet or communication technology has provided new ways to store, access and distribute data in digital format. But these advancements have also introduced new challenges to protect information circulating over networks. One of them is to avoid the risks for inappropriate use of medical information circulating over networks. Even though most of the medical providers are honest there are few who illegally increase the size of their bank accounts through fraudulent claims. On medical basis has been reported worldwide, presenting the agencies with fake data of medical reports. Fraudulent claim includes; Medical identity theft, Billing for services not rendered, up coding of services, up coding of items, unbundling or unnecessary services, kickbacks, beneficiary fraud and duplicate claims. Therefore there is a need of "A systematic development of multiple watermarking schemes and their complete assessment through defining the parameter property such that they can offer a better complementary solution for achieving improved security". In the present work, a hybrid watermarking system is proposed so as to provide authorization, authenticity, availability, confidentiality, data integrity, reliability, and reversibility of the patient's information in the healthcare systems.

As security is very crucial in almost every sector of services nowadays, watermarking is more or less an important mechanism in securing vital information such as medical images. Water marking aimed at providing secure medical images through integrity verification, such that unauthorized person cannot be able to modify it. In a bid to find a secured watermarking technique which prevents a medical image from degradation, this research explores a mechanism known as Hybrid Transformed Watermarking. Two mechanisms are employed that include Discreet Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discreet Wavelet Transform (DWT). The two techniques were combined to transform a medical image with the intent of providing authenticity and integrity verification, the final result was an efficient watermarked imaged.
Robust Watermarking Method for Secure Transmission of Medical Images in EHR Systems

Confidentiality of Electronic Health Record (EHR) and privacy are two important security requirements for healthcare systems. Many devices on the EHR network utilize little or no encryption, which makes data in transit vulnerable to exploitative attacks, such as Man-in-the-Middle and other filtration methods. Recently, watermarking algorithms as an efficient response to these requirements is in the underline. In this paper, we present a robust watermarking method conceived as part of an Electronic Health Record platform. In this method a chaotic encryption and blind medical image watermarking technique was incorporated into the system as an authorization mechanism to ensure confidentiality and integrity of electronic health information. We present a hybrid watermarking method based on a combination of discrete wavelet transform (DWT), hessenberg Decomposition (HD), Singular value decomposition (SVD) and an original chaos crypto system based on the Arnold Transform (AT) of Singular Value Decomposition. In order to spread the robustness of our algorithm and provide additional security, an improved SVD-AT embedding and extraction procedure has been used to scramble the EHR data in the preprocessing step of the proposed method. In the process of watermark embedding, an R-level discrete wavelet transform was applied to the host image. The low frequency wavelet coefficients are selected to carry this scrambled-watermark. In extraction process, the stored used plain image is obtained from the trusted authority server to complete the verification process. The receiver should compare the unsigned watermark with the extracted watermark again. The verification can be done before clinical procedures and diagnosis. The proposed watermarking method endures entirety attacks and rightly extracts the hidden watermark without significant degradation in the image quality, thus, when the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Normalized Correlation (NC) performance of the proposed algorithm is performed.
Medical Images Watermarking Schemes-A Review

As a result of internet expansion, the popularity of sharing medical documents between specialists in different medical institutes and hospitals has increased. Accordingly, protecting the transmitted patient's data against any modification or accessing from unauthorized people is a must. One of the popular solutions for protecting patient's data against tampers like copy-past, text addition and content removal and various geometric attacks like crop, rotate and resize and signal attacks like histogram equalization, Gaussian noise, median filter, and sharpening is watermarking techniques. Watermarking techniques can be classified according to many perspectives like Robustness, Human Perceptivity, Task Performed, Domain Type, Extraction Process and Secret Keys. Medical image can be in the spatial domain and transform domain. This paper presents a review of recent watermarking techniques of medical images and a comparison between various types of transform domains and the different purposes of medical images' watermark. A proposed scheme is presented in this paper.
Secure and efficient health data management through multiple watermarking on medical images

The landscape of healthcare delivery and medical data management has significantly changed over the last years, as a result of the significant advancements in information and communication technologies. Complementary and/or alternative solutions are needed to meet the new challenges, especially regarding security of the widely distributed sensitive medical information. Digital watermarking is a recently established research area with many applications; nevertheless, the potential of this technology to contribute value-added services to medical information management systems has only recently started to be realized by the research community. The paper presents a review of research efforts in the area of medical-oriented watermarking and proposes a wavelet-based multiple watermarking scheme; this scheme aims to address critical health information management issues, including origin and data authentication, protection of sensitive data, and image archiving and retrieval. In accordance with the strict limitations applying to medical images, the scheme allows the definition of a region of interest (ROI) whose diagnostic value is protected, since the only additional information embedded therein aims at integrity control. The robustness of the method is enhanced through a form of hybrid coding, which includes repetitive embedding of BCH encoded watermarks. The experimental results on different medical imaging modalities demonstrate the efficiency and transparency of the watermarking scheme.
Multiple watermark method for privacy control and tamper detection in medical images

Medical images in digital form must be stored in a secure way to preserve stringent image quality standards and prevent unauthorised disclosure of patient data. This paper proposes a multiple watermarking method to serve these purposes. A multiple watermark consists of an annotation part and a fragile part. Encrypted patient data can be embedded in an annotation watermark, and tampering can be detected using a fragile watermark. The embedded patient data not only save storage space, it also offers privacy and security.
Advances in medical image watermarking: a state of the art review

Watermarking has been considered to be a potent and persuasive gizmo for its application in healthcare setups that work online, especially in the current COVID-19 scenario. The security and protection of medical image data from various manipulations that take place over the internet is a topic of concern that needs to be addressed. A detailed review of security and privacy protection using watermarking has been presented in this paper. Watermarking of medical images helps in the protection of image content, authentication of Electronic Patient Record (EPR), and integrity verification. At first, we discuss the various prerequisites of medical image watermarking systems, followed by the classification of Medical Image Watermarking Techniques (MIWT) that include state-of-the-art. We have classified MIWT's into four broader classes for providing better understanding of medical image watermarking. The existing schemes have been presented along with their cons so that the reader may be able to grasp the shortcomings of the technique in order to develop novel techniques proving the inevitability of the presented review. Further, various evaluation parameters along with potential challenges pertaining to medical image watermarking systems have been discussed to provide a deep insight into this research area.
A Review of Image Watermarking Applications in Healthcare

In this article, we focus on the complementary role of watermarking with respect to medical information security (integrity, authenticity …) and management. We review sample cases where watermarking has been deployed. We conclude that watermarking has found a niche role in healthcare systems, as an instrument for protection of medical information, for secure sharing and handling of medical images. The concern of medical experts on the preservation of documents diagnostic integrity remains paramount.
Development Of A New Watermarking Algorithm For Telemedicine Applications

Watermarking algorithms are used for embedding watermark like patient’s history and doctor’s signature in binary image format into host’s medical image for telemedicine applications. In this work the watermarking of medical image is done in DCT and DWT domains and the performance is evaluated based on PSNR and MSE. From the obtained results it is observed that the watermarking in wavelet domain using Haar wavelet yields better result than in DCT domain.
