Introduction: Geographies of the urban night

Urban Studies, 2014

Academic research tends to overlook what happens when night falls. This special issue aims to bring the space-time of the urban night to the fore by asking how nocturnal cities are produced, used, experienced and regulated in different geographical contexts. Despite local variations and specificities important similarities and ongoing transformations are identified regarding the long-term trends in the formation of the space-times of the urban night. We have structured this special issue on the basis of four important focal points of research for studying the night: (1) changing meanings and experiences of urban darkness and nights; (2) the evolution of the night-time economy; (3) the intensification of regulation; and (4) dynamics in practices of going out. By bringing different sets of literature and theoretical perspectives together this special issue provides a relational perspective on the urban night.

Urban night Introduction The Urban Night: a Space Time for Innovation and Sustainable Development

Articulo - Journal of Urban Research, 2016

The objective of this issue of Articulo – Journal of Urban Research - is to examine the urban night as an innovative space-time on different scales and in different geographic contexts. In this introduction, I remind the reader that the night has often been approached negatively. I discuss the process of colonization of the night and the pressures and strains experienced by the individuals, communities, organizations and neighborhoods of the “polychronic city”. In the second part, I focus on the innovations unfolding in cities at night in different fields: economic, social, environmental and cultural. In the last section, I look at the possible contributions of “night studies” to our urban nights, to urban planning and sustainable development.

Effects of nightlife activities on urban spaces and design: a case study of Cairo, Egypt

City, Territory and Architecture, 2022

Hyper-diversity in old communities should be rehabilitated to address various man-made changes that threaten sustainability and viability at night. This study elucidates this argument by reviewing and synthesising theoretical and empirical evidence about urban governance support regarding the participation of neighbourhood residents to improve or eliminate nightlife. The method is based on a systematic review, direct observation and interview with random samples of residents, workers and visitors in commercial and recreational places. This study criticises changes in the public space of the Al-Hussein Mosque, which led to changes in urban forms and affected the nightlife in Old Cairo. However, it asserts that the hyper-diversity of activities in public spaces because of the lack of urban governance controls should consider changes in terms of the participation of vulnerable groups in nightlife. A new conceptual framework for interpreting stakeholders' positive and negative responses is proposed, which operates across four overlapping steps of urban governance: predicting, proposing, preparing and preventing.

Urban Nightscapes of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Democratic decentralization in Brazil in the end of the 1980s played an important role by giving to local government direct participation in urban redevelopment and fiscal gathering. Municipal investment in urban projects in Rio de Janeiro had been increased since 1990s and raised the highest level in the last years. In the beginning of 1990s the city council approved a new Comprehensive Plan, which established policies for urban space development. The plan served as a public guide for urban projects and, in broad sense, helped the local government to uphold nightlife. The actual nightscape of Rio de Janeiro is a composition of renewed venues based on bars, restaurants and nightclubs; old-fashioned bars and liquor warehouses; and entertainment centers grouping movie theaters, department stores, supermarkets and food halls. These brightly lit places are intersected by residential neighborhoods, where traffic and street life slowly fade after sunset. Rio’s nightscape is also covered by black points and obscured places “where one should never go after the sun goes down”. A regime of visibility organizes functions, habits and imaginaries in the nighttime landscape. This article focuses on the local policies, conflicts and negotiations of nightlife which during the last thirty years organized that regime of visibility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A geographical perspective on the formation of urban nightlife landscape

Humanities and Social Sciences Communications

The significance of nightlife and the nighttime economy has witnessed a growing prominence in the realm of urban development. The urban nightlife landscape, serving as the backdrop for urban nighttime pursuits, plays a significant role in determining nighttime consumption patterns and overall nocturnal experiences. However, there is a significant lacuna in the existing scholarship on the fundamental reasoning behind the formation of nightlife landscapes, with the primary analytical focus in earlier studies on daytime landscapes. Drawing upon a spatiotemporal geography perspective, this paper aims to uncover the underlying logic behind the various forms of urban nightlife landscapes. It seeks to identify the key factors that shape these landscapes, thus unveiling their formation mechanisms, overall typology and aesthetic characteristics. Based on the cases of four bar streets in Guangzhou, China, this study argues that the historical heritage and location advantages give rise to two ...
