Transforming to Product Software: A Case Study on the Evolution of Software Product Management Processes during the Stages of Productization

Within the software industry, one can recognize a strong trend towards productization, which is the transformation process from customer-specific software to a standard product. Organizations that originally focussed on building custom software regularly reorient towards a market. In order to grow into a mature product software company, an organization has to introduce and adapt its software product management processes. This paper presents a case study on how soft- ware product management processes evolve during the stages of productization at a small software company. We identify productization stages at the case company and describe the situational factors and implemented software product management capabilities during those stages. The paper provides a validation of the productization model, and insight into the development of SPM processes in relation to the productization stages.

Productization: transforming from developing customer-specific software to product software

2010

Developing product software is getting increasing attention from both academics and practitioners. Organizations are recognizing the benefits and importance of developing a product for a market. Also, several software companies that develop customer-specific software have identified a need to change to developing and selling product software. Since few studies are available in this domain, it is difficult for organizations to handle such a transformation. In this research, we introduce the productization process that describes the transformation from developing customer-specific software to product software.

A Reference Model for Software Business Activities

Porter's model describing enterprise internal value chain has been applied widely to analysis of operational settings while its' applicability to the domain of software business is limited. This paper presents a model for the core value creating activities for software businesses aiming at explaining the variations of various software businesses and software-based businesses in a compact form. The model is validated by applying it to characterize differences between traditional businesses, independent software vendors, professional service providers, social media platforms, app stores and other related businesses. Most of these follow a main U-shaped value chain from opportunity to offering while differ in customer interface activities and asset management.

A reference framework for software product management

… Report UU-CS-2006- …, 2006

In the last decade, software product management has received much practical attention, though research in this area is still scattered. In this paper, we give a status overview of the current software product management domain by performing a literature study and field studies with product managers. The results are used to develop a reference framework for software product management, in which the key process areas, stakeholders and their relations are modeled. To validate the reference framework, we perform a case study in which we analyze the stakeholder communication concerning the conception, development and launching of a new product at a major software vendor. Finally, we propose the Software Product Management Workbench for operational support for product managers in product software companies.

Towards a Reference Framework for Software Product Management

14th IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE'06), 2006

In the last decade, software product management has received much practical attention, though research in this area is still scattered. In this paper, we present a reference framework for software product management, in which the key process areas, namely portfolio management, product roadmapping, release planning and requirements management, are identified, as well as the stakeholders and their relations. With this reference framework, we provide a structure for a body of knowledge for software product management.

What do we know about software product management? - a systematic mapping study

2011 Fifth International Workshop on Software Product Management (IWSPM), 2011

Software product management (SPM) offers tools and practices for achieving business goals of a company as well as for increasing the predictability and profitability of software product development. Despite the importance of this topic, the studies of SPM have this far been fragmented. The goal of the present study is to summarize the existing knowledge in software product management and identify the areas which need further research. The paper reports the conduct and the results of a systematic mapping study which identified 25 studies on SPM. Still, most of the papers had only hypotheses and theories that were not empirically confirmed or the confirmation was based on a small set of cases. The existing knowledge of software product management consists of small and unconnected pieces. In addition to this, our specific interest, software product management in the cloud environment has not been studied at all. However, since both researchers and practitioners find research in SPM important, this area needs more research in the future.
