Six Sigma: literature review and implications for future research

There has been considerable number of papers published related to Six Sigma applications in manufacturing and service organizations. However, very few studies are done on reviewing the literature of Six Sigma in all the areas including manufacturing, construction, education, financial service, BPOs and healthcare etc. Considering the contribution of Six Sigma in recent time, a more comprehensive review is presented in this paper. The authors have reviewed Six Sigma literatures in the way that would help research academicians and practitioners to take a closer look at the growth, development, and applications of this technique. The authors have reviewed various journal papers and suggested different schemes of classification. In addition, certain gap areas are identified that would help researchers in further research.The paper has been categorized in four sections. Section one & two present introduction to Six Sigma and preamble to literature review respectively. Section three presents classification of Six Sigma papers based on research methodology & research contents. Section four presents key findings, conclusion and areas for future research.

Six Sigma: a literature review

Purpose: The purpose of the work presented in this paper is to capture the current state of Six Sigma as well as to document the current practices of Six Sigma through a systematic literature review so as to extend and update the previous work of Brady and Allen (2006). Design/methodology/approach: The approach to this research is to answer the questions such as what is Six Sigma?, what are the applications of the Six Sigma?, what are the main enablers and barriers to its application?, and what are the emerging trends? These questions are used to guide the search of papers from various publication databases even if it is expected that existing literature might not be sufficiently developed to translate each question directly into a finding. The literature is then analysed and the major emerging themes are presented. Findings: Seven key findings (topics on which the views of the authors converged) and two issues (topics on which authors had differing views) have been established. These include the interpretation of Six Sigma, tools and techniques, implementation of Six Sigma, benefits, adoption, enablers and links to other disciplines. Originality/value: The systematic literature review approach used in this paper allows emerging trends and issues in Six Sigma to be highlighted in a structured and thematic manner, enabling the future work to progress as Six Sigma continues to develop and evolve. The findings also open up new opportunities to apply Six Sigma in the fields that are not widely explored before for instance sustainability and Product-Service Systems (PSS).

THE ADVANCEMENT & EFFECT OF SIX SIGMA APPROACH IN A MODERN

Six Sigma has been well applied in manufacturing Industries through improving processes that use the DMAIC methodology. Some larger corporations have integrated Six Sigma so well into the corporate culture that it can be considered the DNA of the company. A number of successful cases have been reported of six-sigma-based management activities dramatically enhancing a company's strategic performance over study periods of several years. However there are number of case studies in the literature regarding Six Sigma, there is a lack of empirical studies that adopt statistical approaches. This study proposes a research model based on Six Sigma to test whether management activities improve corporate competitiveness. Empirical results showing that six sigma activities do indeed contribute to process management refreshment, quality improvement, and finally corporate competitiveness. In addition the possible changes and outcomes which occour by applying this concept of six sigma in various Industries. We hope that this study enables further rigorous studies investigating six sigma as a major strategic activity.

Lean Six Sigma is a data-driven and fact-based philosophy which helps to prevent the value defects over the detection of defects for better quality and improvements. Lean Six Sigma helps in achieving satisfaction of customer and core results by reducing waste, altering or variation in process, process cycle time, by the use of standardisation and flow and thus creates the competitive advantage for organisations. Lean Six Sigma is applicable at the place where variation and waste exist, and all employee or company staff should be involved. Lean Six Sigma is a combination of 'Lean' and 'Six Sigma'. Six Sigma helps to reduce the process variation whereas Lean helps to eliminate or reduce waste. Thereby, the principles of Lean Six Sigma help to improve the efficiency and quality of the process. This has been empirically investigated by various researchers. In this paper, an endeavour has been made to systematically compile the work carried out by the researchers in the area of Lean six sigma and Lean Manufacturing and its impact on Organisational Performance.
