Brill profit levels and organic growth in line with expectations, integration V&R according to plan and continuation of eBusiness growth Update on year-to-date performance During the third quarter Brill's eBusiness continued its strong growth, driven by eBooks and digital primary sources. This growth compensated for the ongoing decline in print books. YTD Journal sales declined mainly due to delayed invoicing, which is expected to be recovered in Q4, and continuing IT problems at our UK based distributor. Overall Brill's revenues including the acquisition of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht and Böhlau Verlag (V&R) are clearly ahead of last year. Cost of goods sold improved slightly as a result of the migration from print to eBooks. Operating costs were in line with expectations. Year to date EBITDA, operating profit and net profit have developed as planned. The integration of V&R runs according to plan. Both the Brill as well as the V&R teams and staff are now part of one global matrix organization. Various integration projects in IT, production, distribution, publishing and sales are underway. Management closely leads and monitors the integration and is pleased with the progress and the results of the acquired V&R business so far. In August, Brill acquired the journal Folia Primatologica from Karger Publishing, an important addition to our Biology portfolio. At the end of Q3 Brill's Book Archive was launched, a digital archive expanding our eBook list with more than 6,000 back list titles in 2021. The first sales are expected in Q4. FY Outlook The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make market circumstances difficult and unpredictable. In Asia important countries are still in lockdown and (intercontinental) travel is still difficult or impossible, limiting our staff to visit authors, conferences and customers in person. The shortages in the global supply chains are hampering Brill as well, to the extent that this may have a negative impact on the results of the important 4 th quarter and could affect our top-and bottom line negatively.

Acquisitions and eBusiness continue to drive growth at Brill in HY1 2021 NOTE: The information in this report is based on unaudited interim financial statements. Highlights • Revenue up 19.1%, mainly driven by the acquisition of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlage (V&R) • Organic revenue growth 3.9% • COVID-19 accelerates the shift from print to digital • Very strong eBook sales with 14.9% organic growth • Journals decline due to timing of releases • EBITDA up 9% excluding the V&R acquisition • Net profit includes V&R acquisition integration costs of EUR 618 thousand • Wim Dikstaal appointed as CFO and Management Board member per September 1 • New financing agreement with RABO signed Peter Coebergh, CEO commented: "The highlight of the first HY 2021 was the acquisition of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht (V&R) in February. Together with our new German and Austrian colleagues we have started the integration process which runs on schedule. So far the performance of V&R is in line with expectations. We are satisfied with the underlying revenue and profit development at Brill and are still benefiting from cost savings due to limited travel. Last year's acceleration of our eBusiness continues and compensates the ongoing decline in print book sales. In a still uncertain market environment Brill continues to execute its strategic agenda to become a fully digitally driven publishing house and to grow our revenue, profit and scale". Developments in the first half year Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht On March 1, 2021 Brill acquired all business assets of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlage. The renowned German publishing house, founded in 1735 and headquartered in Göttingen, has a superb and long-standing international reputation in the Humanities, especially in the fields of Theology and History.

The revised mandate of the Publications Office has as its main objective to develop the Office in close cooperation with the stake-holding institutions in order to promote the multilingual communication policy of the EU using state-of-the-art technology in publishing and dissemination. 2008 saw the initiation of several major projects foreseen in the medium-term development plan (2009-2012) which proposes to refocus the Office's activities around the mission entrusted to it by the institutions. It identifies the priorities, proposes concrete actions and highlights the foreseen evolution of the Office in the years to come. The plan shows that the institutions are fully aware of the importance of the information and communication strategy of which the Office is a part. They see the Office as a tool for bridging the gap between Europe and its citizens by sending coherent and clear information to the general public and to those interested in European affairs. The institutions rely o...

Relaunching ABR in the Midst of a Global Pandemic: Highlights of Vol. 23 (No. 1)
American Business Review
We relaunched the all-digital American Business Review (ABR) in Fall 2019. Little did we imagine that COVID-19 would appear in Spring 2020 and disrupt life all over the globe. All three audiences of ABR viz. Businesses, Business Students and Business Faculty have had to scramble over the last few months. Businesses that we research, teach and learn about as Business Professors and Students had the most difficult time of all with the global lockdowns. Essential businesses including food, medicine, sanitation and their supply chains and distribution channels had to keep working somehow-anyhow. Along with essential services were our lifesavers including medical, emergency, and national security personnel globally who continued to work at great personal health risk. Those businesses that were not considered essential had to shut down for public health and safety. In the process, all businesses had to suffer great losses. We at ABR recognize and salute you all for your great contribution...
2018
Dear Reader! We are pleased to inform you about the results of our work, which are summarized in this annual report for 2018. The high number of 31 publications in scientific journals, the great success in winning third-party funded projects and the significant growth of the scientific staff at the institute are our landmarks this year-and therefore mentioned right at the beginning. To a large extent, these achievements are due to the success in launching new projects allowing us to carry out up-to-date and internationally relevant research. Examples are Prof. Baumgartner's new "Cresting: CiRcular Economy-SusTainability Implications and guidING progress" project, Prof. Posch's new "Green Energy Lab" project and Prof. Stern's "Supporting TrAnsition from lineaR To CIRCuLar valuE chainS" project. We are also proud to participate in the doctoral programme "Climate Change-Uncertainties, Thresholds and Coping Strategies," which is carried out together with colleagues from five different faculties of the University of Graz and is financed by the Austrian Science Fund. It is now going into its second phase of successful and productive research. In addition, the field of excellence "Climate Change Graz," in which Prof. Posch and Prof. Baumgartner are involved, has taken up and expanded its activities. And the prospective field of excellence "COLIBRI-Complexity of Life in Basic Research and Innovation" as well as the research network "Human Factor in Digital Transitions", in both of which Prof. Füllsack is involved, have gained considerable momentum. In teaching, we were able to start an Erasmus Mundus Master's Programme on Circular Economy, to offer a series of Doctoral study programs about Digitalization and to attract highly qualified international students for our joint Master's programmes "Sustainable Development" and "Industrial Ecology." We also congratulate the following (former) colleagues for the successful finalization of their doctoral studies: Philipp Babcicky, for his work on "Flood preparedness of private households: Determinants of protective behaviour and insights into collective action"; Matthias Damert, for his work on "Corporate strategies in response to climate change-An empirical analysis of characteristics, drivers and outcomes with a focus on the global automotive industry", Sajeev Erangu Purath Mohankumar, for his work on "Rethinking the manure management chain: An investigation of climate, air quality and animal welfare impacts; Eva Fleiß, for her work on "I shine, not burn. Empirical studies on citizen participation initiatives in the field of photovoltaics."; Stefanie Hatzl, for her work on "Adoption-Diffusion-System Change: Empirical insights into demand-side aspects of transition towards a sustainable energy system"; and Arijit Paul, for his work on "Strategic and ethical dimensions of business responses to climate change." We wish them all the best for their future careers!
