There is an increasing interest on the application of ZnO nanorods in photocatalysis and many growth methods have been applied, in particular the spray pyrolysis technique which is attractive for large scale production. However it is interesting to know if the nanorod morphology is the best considering its photocatalytic activity, stability, and cost effectiveness compared to a nonoriented growth. In this work we present a systematic study of the effect of the precursor solution (type of salt, solvent, and concentration) on the morphology of sprayed ZnO films to obtain nanoflakes and nanorods without the use of surfactants or catalysts. The surface properties and structural characteristics of these types of films were investigated to elucidate which morphology is more favorable for photocatalytic applications. Wettability and photocatalytic experiments were carried out in the same conditions. After UV irradiation both morphologies became hydrophilic and achieved a dye discoloration ...
Photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoparticles prepared via submerged arc discharge method
Applied Physics A, 2010
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO Nps) were prepared using zinc nitrates and succinic acid as a fuel through low temperature solution combustion method (LCS) at 500 0 C. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis and SEM. The XRD result shows that synthesized ZnO was hexagonal wurtzite stracture. FTIR indicates a significant band at ~ 380 cm −1 is assigned to the characteristic stretching mode of Zn-O. UV-Vis spectroscopy of ZnO Nps shows the band gap of 3.29 eV. SEM images show that the product is agglomerated and almost spherical in shape. The Photocatalytic activity of the synthesized ZnO Nps was examined for the degradation of methylene blue dye under both UV and Sunlight and the results shows it is a good photocatalytic materials.

We report the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanoparticles prepared via pulse combustion-spray pyrolysis (PC-SP) at a high rate. Instead of using an ultrasonic nebulizer as the atomizer during PC-SP synthesis, a two-fluid nozzle was used to enhance the production rate. A high production rate was achieved by the use of a two-fluid nozzle, which efficiently generated droplets in large quantities, and by controlling the rate of precursor flow. ZnO nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The prepared ZnO nanoparticles were spherical and highly crystalline with an average size of 15.6 nm. In addition, high UV-light absorption and visible-light transparency properties were successfully obtained for a dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles in glycerol. The high UV-blocking capacity of the ZnO particle dispersion makes the dispersion potentially useful in cosmetic applications.
