Burden of tobacco in Nepal: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990–2017

ObjectiveThis study systematically reviews the data extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study and sets out to assess the age-specific and sex-specific mortality and disability attributable to different forms of tobacco from 1990 to 2017, for Nepal.DesignThis cross-sectional study extracted data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s Global Burden of Disease database, then was quantitatively analysed to show the trends and patterns of prevalence of tobacco use, deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attributable to tobacco use from different diseases from the year 1990 to 2017 in Nepal.SettingNepal.ResultsIn between 1990 and 2015, the age-standardised prevalence of daily tobacco smoking decreased by 33% in males, 48% in females and 28% in both. Trend of tobacco use: Reviewing the STEPS surveys conducted in Nepal

The trend of tobacco use has changed over time in the world including Nepal. This study aimed to describe the trend of tobacco use in Nepal, is based on the review of the findings of three consecutive STEP wise approaches to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS) survey 2007, conducted by Society for Local Integrated Development Nepal (SOLID Nepal), and STEPS surveys 2013 and 2019, conducted by Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC). This study only compared the proportion of people who consumed tobacco during these surveys based on sex, age group, and age of initiation of tobacco use to describe the trend of tobacco use. The trend of any tobacco use, smoked tobacco use, and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use declined to 28.9% from 37.1%, to 17.1% from 26.2%, and to 18.3% from 18.6%, respectively during the period of 2007 to 2019. Tobacco Use and Its Associated Factors among Undergraduate Public Health Students in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Background. Despite the crucial role of public health students in tobacco control, there is a paucity of information regarding tobacco use among this population in Nepal. This study aims to assess the prevalence of tobacco use among undergraduate public health students in Kathmandu valley, Nepal. Methods. A web-based survey was conducted among 386 undergraduate public health students in Kathmandu valley, Nepal, using the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire. Associated factors were examined using multivariate logistic regression analyses at the level of significance of 0.05. Results. A total of 16.8% of students were current cigarette smokers, 39.9% had ever smoked cigarettes, and 62.2% had smoked their first cigarettes during adolescence. Among the participants, 11.7% currently used other tobacco products.
