An Evaluation of Video-to-Video Face Verification
Person recognition using facial features, e.g., mugshot images, has long been used in identity documents. However, due to the widespread use of web-cams and mobile devices embedded with a camera, it is now possible to realise facial video recognition, rather than resorting to just still images. In fact, facial video recognition offers many advantages over still image recognition; these include the potential of boosting the system accuracy and deterring spoof attacks. This paper presents an evaluation of person identity verification using facial video data, organized in conjunction with the Int’l Conf. on Biometrics (ICB) 2009. It involves 18 systems submitted by seven academic institutes. These systems provide for a diverse set of assumptions, including feature representation and pre-processing variations, allowing us to assess the effect of adverse conditions, usage of quality information, query selection and template construction for video-to-video face authentication.

A strong requirement to come up with secure and userfriendly ways to authenticate and identify people, to safeguard their rights and interests, has probably been the main guiding force behind biometrics research. Though a vast amount of research has been done to recognize people based on still images, the problem is still far from solved for unconstrained scenarios. This has led to an increased interest in using video for the task of biometric recognition. Not only does video has potential to provide more information, but also is more suitable for recognizing people in general surveillance scenarios. Other than the multitude of still frames, video makes it possible to characterize biometrics based on inherent dynamics like gait which is not possible with still images. In this paper, we discuss several recent algorithms to illustrate the usefulness of videos to identify people based on their face and gait. A brief discussion on remaining challenges is also included.
Face Authentication Competition on the BANCA Database

This paper details the results of a face verification competition [2] held in conjunction with the First International Conference on Biometric Authentication. The contest was held on the publically available BANCA database [1] according to a defined protocol . Six different verification algorithms from 4 academic and commercial institutions submitted results. Also, a standard set of face recognition software from the internet [3] was used to provide a baseline performance measure.
