R&D and non-R&D in the innovation process among firms in ASEAN countries

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify factors promoting innovation in the framework of R&D based on surveys conducted on firms in five ASEAN countries, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach The analytical method divided sample firms into two categories, namely, “the R&D group” and “non-R&D group.” The analysis attempts to identify which of the internal capabilities, consisting of technology, human factors and organization factors, promote innovation. Ordered probit analysis is employed. Findings Findings from the estimations indicate that the two groups pursue product innovation differently. The R&D group promotes innovation by cross-functional teams of production, engineering, and marketing and IT use, whereas the non-R&D group promote product innovation by HRD programs for workers, group awards for suggestions or QC, and ISO9000 series. This paper attempts to analyze the relationship between ICT and RD and (ii) External use of ICT which consists of B2B e-commerce, B2C e-commerce, EDI, SCM, and Public-SNS. ICT total contains all of these. Research questions are as follows: (i) whether RD (ii) what are the factors of production innovation in RD and (iii) how ICT use affects (i) and (ii). This study is based on mail surveys in five ASEAN economies, such as Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City), Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Thailand from 2013 to 2014. The total number of valid responses was 1,061. Ordered probit analysis was employed. The significant variables common to both groups are few. Product innovation is one of the crucial strategies for companies to maintain a competitive advantage, especially in the global market. Using survey data of 266 industrial enterprises in Thai Nguyen province, the study has shown six factors that have a strong and direct positive impact on the product innovation activities of enterprises, including (1) Competition and market information, (2) Institutions, policies and legal system, (3) Infrastructure, (4) Enterprise characteristics, (5) Entrepreneur and human resource quality, and (6) Financial capacity. The paper also shows that, for improving product innovation, enterprises need to promote a culture of product innovation, build an R&D fund, strengthen cooperation and association to increase human resource quality, actively approach government policies and supports, and enhance product efficiency innovation management.
The effect of internal and external sources of knowledge on product innovation in Southeast Asia

This paper examines the effect of internal and external sources of knowledge on the introduction of new products based on new technologies or information to the firms responded to the questionnaire survey conducted in four Southeast Asian countries. We estimate binary probit models. The estimation results verify that local firms make full use of locally available sources of new technologies or information to achieve the product innovation. On the other hand, foreign-owned firms depend mainly on internal R&D capacities and cooperation with local universities.

Innovation is crucial for any business to survive and thrive. In particular, the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic has put tremendous pressure on the innovation activities of enterprises. Using survey data from 266 industrial enterprises in Thai Nguyen province, the paper has assessed the current status of innovation activities in Thai Nguyen provinces-Vietnam through four aspects: Product innovation, process innovation, organizational innovation, and Marketing innovation. The analysis results show that innovation activities are only at an average level and need many efforts from both enterprises and local authorities. The study also suggested a number of solutions to promote innovation, including (i) strengthening human resource development, (2) enhancing scientific research to promote innovation, (3) improving international cooperation, and applying modern instruments in production and innovation.

Although the East Asian economies have been developing in the 21th century, innovation is indispensable for their further economic development. In order to achieve successful innovation, firms have to elevate their capability including technology, human resources, business organization, ICT use and so on by collaborating with outside organizations such as MNCs (Multi-national companies), universities, public organizations. The outside organizations are termed as external linkages. Based on authors' survey data of four ASEAN economies such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand from 2012 to 2013, this paper examines how factors such as organizational learning, ICT use, and technology enhance product and process innovation. These factors are used as latent variables in analysis and consist of the following variables: (i) technology such as capital goods, (ii) organizational learning including QC, cross-functional teams, (iii) ICT use such as B2B, B2C, EDI, SCM, ERP, CAD/CAM, groupware, SNS etc., and (iv) external linkages, such as MNCs, local and public organizations, and universities. This study employs SEM (Structural equation modeling) in order to analyze the causal relationships not only among the above four latent variables but also between these and innovation. The six hypotheses were postulated as follows: H1. External linkages enhance organizational learning; H2. External linkages improve capital goods; H3. External linkage improves ICT use; H4. Organizational learning improves capital goods; H5. Organizational learning improves ICT use; and H6. Organizational learning, ICT use, and capital goods enhance innovation. Estimation results on product innovation demonstrate that organization learning, technology (capital goods), and ICT use enhance product innovation. On the other hand, organization learning promotes technology (capital goods) and ICT use, which promotes process innovation. Accordingly, this study clarifies that ICT use, technology and innovation capability enhance product and process innovation.

Innovation is the core ingredient in the competitiveness of today’s businesses. Any company that cannot innovate will be losing its competitiveness. While the study on innovation at conceptual level is widely available, there is still lack of deep understanding of how innovation factors impact each stage of the processes of innovation that happen in Malaysian companies. This process-factor approach and understanding may help the government focuses its assistance on relevant factors at relevant process according to the size of the company. This study examines how companies are affected by fundamental factors needed in innovation. Based on results of MYTIC Study 2012 on the level of Technological Innovation Capability (TIC) of Malaysian companies using the RDCB framework, the significance of each innovation factor in each innovation process is determined. The innovation capability is one of the key and important issues which has been proposed in social sciences. However, this study aimed to investigate the impact of organizational factors on innovation capability of companies with an emphasis on role of research and development talents and research and development technology in companies in industrial city 1, Zanjan. This was applied analytic survey research. A questionnaire was used for collecting the data. The population consisted of all employees and managers of companies which are located in industrial city 1in Zanjan(N= 275). Using Cochran formula, 160 subjects were selected as sample. The SPSS software was used to estimate the model. The estimation results showed that all components of organizational factors had a significant positive impact on company's innovation capability; however, the positive impact was different among various components of organizational factors.

193 This study focuses on the role of human factors in the innovation processes of firms in four member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), i.e., Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Firms are required first to obtain new information related to innovation and then to integrate it with their indigenous resources. The innovation process thus consists of the absorptive process, through which outside information is employed to enhance innovation capability, and the transforming process, through which innovation capability creates innovation. This study identifies essential factors that promote these capabilities. In the absorptive process, two types of personnel are examined, i.e., employees who have experience working with multinational companies (MNCs) and those indigenous to the firm. As for the transforming capability, organizational learning processes, including quality control (QC) and cross-functional teams, are examined. Mail surveys were conducted from 2013 to 2014, and the total number of samples was 665. Based on the data, structural equation modeling (SEM) is employed. The analysis demonstrates that MNCs have the largest impact as external linkages. The most important mediators for locals to connect with MNCs are top management and factory managers who have experience working with MNCs, whereas indigenous employees, such as local engineers, managers, and line leaders, are identified for connectivity with locals. The direct and indirect effects of external linkages on innovation are also estimated. In the transforming process, cross-functional teams have a larger impact on innovation than QC.

This paper analyses the impact of different knowledge sources of product innovation in Vietnam using firm-level data. We analyze the separate impacts of internal knowledge, collaborative knowledge, and regional knowledge. The analysis reveals that internal knowledge sources from internal R&D have a positive influence on product innovation. However, not all kinds of collaborative knowledge sources have significant effects on innovation. Only collaborative knowledge gained from inside the supply chain affects product innovation positively. Apparently, the capacity to benefit from working with knowledge institutes and absorbing knowledge from the environment do not materialize in new products.
