Utilization of the internet by undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

The internet technology over the past few decades has become an important tool in higher education for learning, teaching and research. The study investigated the internet activities engaged in, frequency of use of the internet and challenges limiting the use of the internet among the undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted. A close-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from 300 undergraduate students. Findings were analysed using descriptive statistics and the result indicated that the respondents had good computer skills and used the internet for various activities which vary across faculty of study. The respondents were dissatisfied with the high cost of accessing the internet and inadequate internet facilities. The major recommendation of the study is the provision of basic internet training for the students; equipping the university with adequate internet facilities; regular power supply and free internet access to all university students.
Internet access and use among undergraduate students of Bowen University Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria

The study examined the internet access and use among undergraduate students of Bowen University Iwo, Osun state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population comprises of 4,800 undergraduate students out of which 300 students were randomly selected from various faculties, 298 questionnaires were correctly filled and analyzed. The result of the findings shows that all respondents access and used the internet. Major access was through their mobile phones with 52.7%, only 6.4 accessed through University Digital centre while none from the library. Respondent used internet daily with 68.9%, 41.6% used internet between 7-9 hours a week and experience on internet use shows that 38.6 % have been using the internet since 5 years and above. The main purpose of use is academic with the highest mean score of 3.40. Also, undergraduate use of internet for various academic activities shows that they used internet mainly for searching information on assignment with highest mean score of 3.60. Two hundred and sixty-five (88.9%) of the respondents agreed that access to information is now easy with the internet, while 81.6% agreed that internet has positive impact on their academic work. The major constraint identified includes non availability of internet connectivity around the campus, slow internet connectivity and downloading and constant breaking down of internet services on campus. The study concludes that internet use can contribute positively to students’ academic performance, Recommendation was made that adequate facilities should be put in place by University Management to enable students access the internet.
Internet Use by Students of Faculty of Science in Two Nigerian Universities
The study aimed at examining the use of Internet by students of faculty of science in two Nigerian Universities. The population for the study was 1200 and sample size of 240 was used. Two hundred and forty copies of questionnaire were administered to the respondents. This produced a return rate of 87.5%. The data collected was analysed using frequency and simple percentage and presented using tables. Among the findings of the study are that; most of the respondents use the Internet 2 – 3 times in a week and nearly all the respondents use the Internet facilities located outsides the campus. Also, slow access speed (96%) was the leading problem and almost all the respondents believed that Internet have increased their access to current information, ease research process and improved their professional competency. The study concluded that a majority of the students of faculty of science in Nigerian University are satisfied with the use of the Internet. Recommendations were made for further studies.
The main objective of this study was to assess the availability and utilization of Internet facilities by postgraduate students in federal universities of Southwest, Nigeria. In order to achieve the specificic objective stated, a researchers' designed questionnaire was administered on two hundred seventy one (271) respondents (ninety one respondents from University of Lagos, ninety from University of Ibadan, and ninety from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife). The results which were subjected to frequency counts and percentages showed that the respondents strongly agreed and agreed that Internet facilities were available to them at various locations except in their hostels. The results on the level of utilization of Internet resources showed that 83.4% and 80.4% of the respondents very often and often used some Internet resources such as search engines and e-mails. Other resources such as telnet, Skype, newsgroup and so on were seldom used while other such as scientific and satellite imaging, gopher, among others were never used. The result of the difficulties encountered showed that most respondents strongly agreed and agreed that they encounter challenges in their quest for using Internet facilities. Based on the findings, it was recommended that since the Internet is being very much utilized, the postgraduate students need to be exposed to other Internet resources through workshops or other public awareness and Internet facilities should be made available to postgraduate students in their hostels.
INTERNET USE PATTERN OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDE TS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, NIGERIA
This study examined the pattern of Internet use by undergraduate students at the University of Lagos, Main Campus, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. It revealed that the level of Internet use is low among undergraduate students from both the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Law. It also revealed that though majority of the students browse the Internet many of them cannot design search strategies. However, the study showed that internet use has very high impact on the academic/career related activities of the students. The study recommends the provision of faculty computer laboratories equipped with internet facilities, installation of solar electric power back-up system, and the integration of Internet and computer literacy into the compulsory general studies programme of the University.
The Internet has become a worthwhile tool for scholarly work. It is therefore expected to have a significant impact on academic work of staff and postgraduate students. This paper investigates the purpose and types of Internet resources used by the academic staff and postgraduate students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The concept of Internet, purpose of using the Internet and types of Internet resources used by staff and postgraduate students were highlighted. Survey method was adopted and academic staff and post graduate students in the twelve faculties of the university were the subject of the study. The study found that e-mail and e-journal were the most used Internet resources by academic staff and the post graduate students. Research and learning, communication and social networking are the major purpose of using the Internet by the respondents. It was equally revealed that there is significant difference in the type of Internet resource and purpose of using the Internet in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The study concluded that, the Internet is relevant for the purpose of research and learning.
The Internet is the most visible component of the dynamic developments in information and communication technologies. It could be used for information gathering, storage and dissemination in all academic disciplines .This study examined the prospects and challenges of Internet usage by post graduate students of Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye. One thousand two hundred (1200) copies of structured questionnaire were randomly distributed among various respondents and some of one thousand (1000) was retrieved and analyzed.The study found out that students use the internet mostly for chatting, mailing and entertainment. Only a few of them navigate the Internet for research purposes. In conclusion, this study recommended that there should be a compulsory formal training and workshop programs organized at departmental levels for students on the importance of Internet to their various academic activities. The internet technology has revolutionized the teaching and learning methods, and appropriate use of the technology is critical for University students. The unprecedented growth of information on internet necessitates the continual evaluation from time to time how students have embraced the technology. Thus, the research explored the pattern of internet usage by students of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The research approach adopted for the study was descriptive survey in which a questionnaire was used as the research instrument to collect data from 200 undergraduates selected by stratified random sampling from the four faculties in the university, with a valid response rate of 95%. The population of the study is the postgraduate students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Survey method of the research and stratified random sampling was used for the study to select 550 postgraduate students for the study. However, 502 respondents responded to the questionnaires distributed. The data was presented and analyzed in tables and percentages. The research discovered that majority of the postgraduate students use internet services for their academic programs. It also reveals that utilization of internet has positive impact on postgraduate students and also has influenced the accessibility of online information usage of postgraduate students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. This implies that most of the postgraduate students are internet users.

The major objective of the study was to examine the accessibility and utilization of Internet service by graduate students in university of Lagos ,Nigeria. Specifically, the study made effort to determine the extent to which Internet service was accessible to staff and students of the university, how point of Internet access influenced its usage, factors motivating the use of Internet and what Internet was used for by graduate students in University of Lagos. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and data were collected by administering questionnaires to two hundred respondents randomly selected from faculty of Education in the University.
