Traditionally, building energy model is created in isolation from the architectural building information model and energy analyses have relied on a single analysis tool. The building energy model can be generated more quickly by leveraging existing data from the BIM. The impacts of energy consumption are significant in the building usage phase, which can last several decades. Early Design Energy Analysis Using Building Information Modeling Technology
With the advent of Military Construction (MILCON) Transformation, the responsibility for conducting energy modeling late in the design process falls solely on the Design/Build contractor or their consultants. This research utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) for energy analysis during the conceptual design phase. Most building energy analyses are conducted later in the design process by energy analysts. This report describes a process of exploring different energy saving alternatives in early design using 3D-CAD (computer-aided design)/BIM technology. This project investigated the feasibility of exporting a gbXML file from a BIM model for use in Green Building Studio, a computer-based energy analysis tool. The goal was to assess the applicability of this technology during a planning or early design charrette in order to identify energy saving measures equal to or exceeding the 30% energy-saving requirement over the ASHRAE baseline. This type of tool could potentially be used early in the project life cycle to evaluate alternative energy design schemas as part of an integrated whole-building design process.

Over the years, building information modelling (BIM) has undergone a significant increase, both in terms of functions and use. One rapidly evolving process that has been envisioned to support building energy performance analysis is the Building Information Modelling. Given the ability of Building Information Models to serve as a multi-disciplinary data repository, this dissertation seeks to explore and exploit the sustainability value of Building Information Modelling/models in delivering buildings that require less energy for its operation, emits less CO2 and at the same time provides a conducive living environment for its occupants. Guidelines for Using Building Information Modeling for Energy Analysis of Buildings

Building energy modeling (BEM), a subset of building information modeling (BIM), integrates energy analysis into the design, construction, and operation and maintenance of buildings. As there are various existing BEM tools available, there is a need to evaluate the utility of these tools in various phases of the building lifecycle. The goal of this research was to develop guidelines for evaluation and selection of BEM tools to be used in particular building lifecycle phases. The objectives of this research were to: (1) Evaluate existing BEM tools; (2) Illustrate the application of the three BEM tools; (3) Re-evaluate the three BEM tools; and (4) Develop guidelines for evaluation, selection and application of BEM tools in the design, construction and operation/maintenance phases of buildings. Twelve BEM tools were initially evaluated using four criteria: interoperability, usability, available inputs, and available outputs. Each of the top three BEM tools selected based on this initial evaluation was used in a case study to simulate and evaluate energy usage, daylighting performance, and natural ventilation for two academic buildings (LEED-certified and non-LEED-certified). The results of the case study were used to re-evaluate the three BEM tools using the initial criteria with addition of the two new criteria (speed and accuracy), and to develop guidelines for evaluating and selecting BEM tools to analyze building energy performance. With increased demand for energy and the simultaneous awareness of the environmental impact of building construction, there is an urgent need to consider the issue of sustainability in the design phase. This paper investigates the potential of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for building energy performance assessment, especially in Indonesia, and provides a framework and overview of the application of BIM related to building energy assessment. This paper used Revit software integrated with Green Building Studio as a BIM tool to analyze energy performance. The results showed that the best scenario for energy use reduction was shown by the last (8th) scenario by combining all possible options covering a 12/5 operation schedule, high efficiency VAV HVAC type, efficient lighting, efficient plug load, instalment of control equipment daylight and occupants, Triple LoE for window glass and solar panels installation. The use of BIM in energy analysis is very useful to measure the amount of energy consumed at the design stage. The findings can be used as a guideline for the potential of BIM related to energy use analysis.
