The objective of the present article is to analyze and compare two different positions regarding the process of situation model updating and the role of backgrounded information, which are the here-and- now view (Morrow, Greenspan & Bower, 1987; Morrow Bower & Greenspan, 1989; Zwaan & Madden, 2004) and memory-based view (O’Brien, Rizzella, Albrecht, & Halleran, 1998; O’Brien, Cook, Guéraud, 2010). These positions are framed under the area of discourse psychology in which the situation model is understood as a coherent mental representation of the microworld expressed in the text. Under this view, the situation model is postulated as a key factor for the comprehension of discourse in general and narratives in particular.
