Can Art Create the Instances for a Democratic Society? (original) (raw)
2018
Abstract
Within the framework of the mobilization of the societies against the crisis and the consequent austerity policies, the artistic world found itself in the margin, both economically and socially, of the fast changing events that shape the sociopolitical reality of our times. Artists found themselves and "malgre' eux" obliged to take part in the controversies of the system itself. They were also obliged to depict the new realities, in order to keep in pace of the times. But is it their position a genuine reaction, or it is just an "opportunistic" stance, an effort to embrace the social struggles in order to remain in the spotlight. And if it is not the case, how and by which means can Art become a tool for the struggling masses to shape new instances for the shaping of new social battles, living conditions and the possibilities for molding a new form of life?
